I love you "think out loud" videos. It gives me an insight of what to look out for. Finally I have the courage to embark this new journey after waiting for 5 years! (i bought a very young plant and just let t grew) (:
WOW! That's a good looking tree! Just started trying out this stuff myself :) harvested 4 pine that i think has potential so far. Going to harvest a young maple i saw earlier today very soon :) Then i don't know what else. southern Norwegian forest does not have too much to offer. Willow might have some potential. I want some spruce tho :) short needles. two of the pines had short needles too :). It will be fun to see what has become of them in 10 years :D.
Mer Lee Primarily because of the specie, you have to select a material for bonsai which has the ability to reduce its leaf size when constrained in a pot. Technique is the second factor such as defoliation and root reduction.
Hello, how do you defoliate the leafs? Where exactly do you cut them off? I've just bought a new chinese elm bonsai but the new grown leafs are getting bigger. Thank you for sharing this!
Ryukin1303 I defoliate the upper branches mostly to allow sunlight to get into the inner part of the lower branches. Then I hope that a vigorous branch can grow from there, and if lucky enough , I let that branch grow freely escaping the tree's silhouette, that is called an "Escape branch". that escape branch will thicken the branch on which it is emanating also. Don not grow too many escape branch, just a couple or three max. this branches are very vigorous and can kill off the weaker twigs. Regarding where to cut branches twigs you cut them just after a node or a leaf. trim twigs to a leaf or 2 nodes. I have a video on how to trim you may want to can check it out. here is the you tube link: th-cam.com/video/WncedwzK8go/w-d-xo.html
You cannot buy it in any hardware store, you buy it from a bonsai store, in the Philippines it is imported from Taiwan and China mostly. The dealer is "Harbest" an agricultural supplier. You can buy electrical transmission wires they're made of aluminum Electrical shops but you have to burn them to anneal (soften) them with limited gauges. I used to buy them with rubber insulators so I can just burn the rubber but now I order from Harbest. sometimes I just buy retail on other club members who imports. A minimum ordering quantity is required to offset shipping cost.
Epicghostc That is a Premna. I say it is a Premna Odorata but that specie is common here in our place in Mindanao Philippines but not all over the Archipelago. That Specie has the ability to reduce its leaves when limited in container same ability of the Taiwan variety called Premna Microphylla. I did mention that it is a Premna Odorata at the start of the video though but maybe its just my English since English is not my native Language.
+Bonsai Iligan You can see the trunk more. With the front you have now there's a branch coming straight towards the viewer and it looks distracting and more cluttered. the back looks like theres more depth to the tree
