    this is where Pilots should have been charged with deliberate dereliction of duty, and arrested for endangering lives and sentenced to good five years. People pay for trip to the destination of choice, being ditched just short or allowing airlines to put a pair of absolute idiots in the cockpit is not covered in that fare.

      hmm bit harsh 5years..the pilots were fools certainly narcissistic attitude but he bounced onto the sea apart from Scully not many planes do that and everyone walks away of course that should never happen and the pilots should never fly passengers again. and stick to riding a bike man like this would be gungho in a car.

      Did the FO get charged? Seems like the FO was just following orders (as cliche as that sounds) and even tried to make corrective action before the PIC overpowered him.
      Edit: just remembered he agreed to disabling the GPWS. With that in mind... I have to say he's almost as culpable.

      Here's the low down from the American side. In the USA we deem that any criminal action against someone for violation of the FAR's (federal aviation regulations) as absolutely unacceptable. In the EU and Australia, and many parts of South America and other places it is normal to criminally charge pilots for misconduct or their involvement in an accident. The problem is that here in the USA legal battles are costly. Simply pleading guilty already runs you thousands of dollars in lawyer and legal fees. The problem is complex, but at the end of the day a husband flying his wife and dog shares the same burden of PIC responsibility as an airline pilot. Should that husband be held to the same standard of being criminaly charged for a felony and five years? Is his burden the same as these RAM Air pilots here? I don't know, a jury wouldn't know, but a court would happily drain that man and his wife and their dog of every penny they posses in order to find out. Is a pilot who makes a dangerous maneuver in order to save the day during an emergency held to the same level of liability? They probably wouldn't be, but if we charged them they would pay a pretty penny just for someone else asking the question. If you think about it, when you buy an airline ticket after watching this video, and click "I agree" to the liability statement, you have informed consent. You have signed your life away knowing the risks. These people (the RAM Air Pilots) should never fly again and should have their licenses revoked. Is that not punishment enough? They toiled for years and spent thousands of dollars on training for those permits (unless they were in the military) and have had their primary means of obtaining income stripped from them forever. I'd say that's good enough. But each country has its own factors to account for, just giving you the other perspective.

    I think it is the first story you cover where pilots are just 100% responsible for what is happening. It is scary that pilots can go full Top Gun mode, but also reassuring that these cases don't happen often, or at least I hope so. Really great videos, good explanations of all the systems involved.

      Well, I'd say the company is still responsible for having this kind of pilots in their payroll. It's difficult to believe this was the first time this captain behaved in this way or that he remained unnoticed until this incident happened.
      There's clearly an organization issue here.

      I just wonder what the pilot in the jump seat thought! He’s there to observe how things are done with this airline before presumably starting work for them. He must have wondered what on earth he just joined 😳. Good video, new case I hadn’t heard of before. It’s the second video of the same type I’ve seen recently, where the accident was totally the fault of the pilots, with no other factors coming into play. Thankfully these are rare.

      @@moiraatkinson I am astounded at how the 61 year old captain managed to get away with flying planes for thousands of hours. He should have his license revoked for endangering the passengers, the crew, and the airframe. I still am curious as well about the pilot-in-training in the jump seat as well. I am betting he switched to a different airline cos of this horrible experience.
      Blame Scale: *95% on the pilots* , *5% on Air Maroc* for hiring the two, without proper background checks or safety reviews.

    Baffled to see that the pilots briefed themselves to actually descend below the MDA on purpose, and even decided to turn off the EGPWS on purpose. This is one of the most bizarre cases of lack of airmanship ive ever seen. What a SINISTER remark by the captain when he says i will monitor the water!

      Yeah. I wondered how he was going to do that. It’s impossible to tell with any certainty how high you are above the water. This is why naval pilots are told to not release their parachute until their feet are wet. There’s just no way of knowing, other than the electronic equipment, which itself has a bit of uncertainty.
      On the other hand, somebody on the plane was exceptionally lucky.

      When you read the Official accident reports it is impossible to find what discipline action was taken. The only airline action you can find out about is anecdotal. Just the way it is. TE. Fidler

    Speaking as an engineer, all equipment reports a specific value, but hidden in the documentation is a band of uncertainty. I imagine the full report goes into this. The problem with avionics is the pilots sometimes take the values literally in conditions that they may be an error. The MDA takes into account the uncertainty that can be expected. So if the MDA is 1000 feet, it may be that the aircraft instruments say 1000 feet, but the aircraft may be 100 feet above or below that point. Because the MDA takes you off the glide slope, you don’t have the redundancy that the slope provides you.
    Going down to one or 200 feet over water is insane. I think they were lucky and that the pilot had pulled back on the yoke shortly before impact, causing the tail section of the plane to impact the water, rather than the landing gear. I think if the plane had been in horizontal flight or angled slightly downward the gear would’ve engaged the water and the plane would’ve crashed.
    Of course, I’m speaking as an engineer, not a pilot. (I have 20/200 vision and would never be allowed within 10 feet of a cockpit .)

    I’ve seen various recreations of this incident but this channel brings extra context to all the incidents it covers. The CVR recreations are particularly enlightening.
    I feel fortunate to have discovered this channel and regret that I missed it for so long. Still, now I can binge 😊

      @@bigboymatthew7471 Yes I’m a fan of those as well. I also like Mystery Diggers - although some criticize him for his accent. It doesn’t bother me. But often he is weakest among all those I watch on causation analysis.
      But I don’t like to critique any of these too much. Obviously they all try hard and put in an enormous amount of work. I appreciate all of them.

    I wonder how often this happens but the plane doesn't end up hitting terrain and the pilots subsequently don't file a report. No way this was this captains first time scud running a non precious approach

      @@pushing2throttles We hope. But in places without heavy oversight from institutions such as the FAA EASA NTSB etc, it might be more common than we care to think about. We are only around a year out from Europe banning all Pakistani certified pilots because they determined that at least 30% of Pakistani issued pilot credentials were fraudulent. The track record of PIA alone gives some credence to this. Thankfully the regions without fairly comprehensive oversight and regulation grow smaller every year. Although god only knows what will happen with the huge pool of Russian credentialed pilots?

    Good analysis and presentation. At 8:50, a professional note: ATC and Professional Pilots would rarely, if ever use and read back headings runways as "Seventeen" . Instead, runway headings are spoken in whole digits such as "Runway One- Seven" for runway '17' (Typically the Runway's magnetic heading), such as "Zero- Six" for runway '60' (60 degrees) or "Three - Six" for runway '36' abbreviated from the heading of 360 degrees. Same goes for Altitudes, You would not typically hear" "Twenty-Five-Hundred Feet", but rather "Two - Five- Hundred", and higher altitudes above 10000 ft as 'Flight-levels" Such as "Flight level 'Two-Five-Zero'" for 25,000 ft.

    As a ground engineer nearly 30 years ago, I hitched a ride into a sea level airport.
    Weather was deteriorating rapidly, heavy fog, barometric pressure unknown.
    Pilot descended on final approach, ground proximity blares, pilot throttles up and ascends 50ft, and proceeds until runway is in sight and lands.
    I asked 'is that alarm meant to do that ?'. First officer replies 'yeah, that's how we land in fog !'.

    there is a reason for the alarms. Why do pilots try to outsmart the alarms, turn them off so they are NOT annoyed ??? I may re-think flying in the future if this is common practice.

    I got the impression that this pilot preferred to approach at a low altitude to get under the fog for better visibility. That on its own doesn't sound too bad, but overall these guys were way too relaxed with safety.

    A couple of comments. Runways are spoken by number i.e. One Seven not Seventeen. Also air pressure is per number One Two Three Four, although One is pronounced Wun, and not Twelve Thirty Four. You have a great series, these little changes will help to improve them.

This was pure luck, on several different occasions. 1st the idiotiic think they did, and it managed to not kill them for 50cm, 2nd the 1st officer decided this feels way of, and pulled up, and 3rd, and moost significant lucky factor is that this aircraft has a high engine mount profile. If this was like a jet with low/underwing mounted engines, those would have collided with the water, and 100% lead to a bad air crash. They were so lucky those engiines were so high on that aircraft, most people I am sure never even gave it a thought.

    Remember “Children of the Magenta” ? Remember when the presenter stated “We created these FOs who quickly engage the AP and blindly follow the magenta line” ?
    I wouldn’t be so quick to cast blame on the FO. What was the cultural bias in their society towards seniors? What was the cultural bias in their company towards rank? Who in that flight deck is in a position of power? Was that power self-regulated?
    The FO cast aside all common sense and reason to comply with and ultimately appease the Captain. He was more worried about keeping him happy than safeguarding his own life. He was operating under a dictatorship.
    If this were still the case in a sound CRM environment then I would happily point the finger at deficiencies in the FO here.

    This is absolutely terrible airmanship… it’s called the MDA for a reason, then turning off the GPWS 😑 and the only bird strike was this plane hitting the water. Love the ATC voice haha.

    This is actually not the first time a commercial aircraft has bounced off the water. In 1996 Aeroperú Flight 603 bounced off the water as well, shortly before they crashed into the water for the second and final time in the darkness. After the first impact the crew realized the aircraft had stuck the water and attempted to climb but damage to the aircraft caused it to roll to the left and crash. It must’ve been terrifying for all onboard. 😢

    I am not sure where you source your voice actors to read the transcripts, or if it is computer generated, but for the love of god please use standard aviation communication. Example "Runway seventeen" instead of "runway one seven".

      Statistics say it is much safer. car accidents happen in my area every single day. there are more then 100k commercial flights everyday with a deadly crash being an odd one out :)

    Turkish Airlines do this all the time.
    They descent to 50 ft out to sea, and then grope their way to the runway under the cloud.
