- Is satanism a cult? I talk about 3 denominations of satanism in this video: The Satanic Temple, Laveyan Satanism, and the Order of Nine Angels. Are they largely atheist? Do they actually believe in satan? Let's talk about it.
Note: Satanism doesnt really have denominations. More like sects.

Hi,
I’m actually a Christian and grew up Seventh Day Adventist. Now I’m at a Christian college, and I have to say that I respect your videos. You teach me a lot and I appreciate your boldness to search for the truth in spite of belief. The conclusion I’m coming to is that no matter what religion some is a part of, people with twisted intentions are willing to succumb to evil acts. One can only be decent if they choose to be decent.

Stanism never seemed like a cult to me. Since they technically don't follow a god or deity and instead just see Satan as a metaphor for human nature and desire. Oh well that's just me.

A couple notes from a Levayan Satanist.
The Satanic Temple is more of an activist group than a denomination of Satanism.
Most Satanists I've talked to don't think of magic as something otherworldly or supernatural like that. Greater Magic is a tool to help focus your emotions or get rid of harmful ones.
"The mating signal" simply means the signs that someone is attracted to you, this rule is basically a fancy way of saying "don't rape people."
The sixth Satanic rule is worded really strangely. I read it as "Don't steal people's things unless that thing is harming them." For example it wouldn't be okay to steal your friends liquor, but say your at a party and your friend has had enough already, it would be in his best interest to take the booze away from him.
On the seventh rule, again, magic is an emotional tool, not some supernatural power.
"Destroy" doesn't necessarily mean literally. Getting him to stop doing what he's doing is the goal here, the means may vary.
EDIT: I forgot about this comment for the longest time but youtube brought to my attention again, so I just wanna say, I am no longer a satanist, and I find Layvey's ideology pretty abhorrent now. I'm gonna leave this comment up, cause I don't think it will convince anyone to convert or whatever, but just in case I'm making this edit.
The Satanic Temple does activism, that doesn't mean they're not a denomination. LaVayen Satanism is not the only rational satanism branch. I find it ridiculous when LaVeyans call other satanist "not real satanist", as it reminds of me Christians calling other Christians "not real Christians". One group doesn't define a whole religion. TST has satanist values, just more humanistic than those compared to you guys. Alot of religious churches do activism as well. Many TST members also have read and enjoyed the Satanic Bible. TST has more evolved Ideas than CoS, which I mean is that you can be an individualist and a humanist. I'm not a member of either branches, however I have read alot about both and that is my understanding between the two.

I've had many interactions with The Satanic Temple and thus far I've yet to meet any of the "evil devil worshippers" I was taught their ranks were built from back when I was actually involved in the christian ministry. If anything, thus far The Temple have only shown themselves to be pretty awesome people, caring, civic-minded, "don't screw with me and I promise I will not screw with you" kinda folke.
The weirdest thing about Satanism for me is that after my religious upbringing, in spite of the fact that it was apparent to my folks that I was "losing my religion" at all of age twelve, something about the Satanic church is as repulsive to me as it is intriguing. I'm not a member, but I find the philosophies behind it fascinating. But that little voice that never quite fully goes away is in the back of my head screaming "you're gonna go to Hell if you end up being wrong" and the rest of me is like "shut up, mom."
LeVay-ist Satanism killed Mickey Hargitay, Jane Russell's husband and Mariska's dad. Or so it's claimed by some in Evangelical Christian circles. And he wasn't even a member (car crash on a highway).
To be fair, having actually read the Satanic Bible, it doesn't actually mean physical destruction of a person, it basically means you don't have to be a sheep about it as in turning the other cheek. And on the topic of the "magic" they also describe it as a psychological decompression that may or may not have effects in the real world based on actual science. I would interpret that to mean that if the person who practices that "magic" is successful, they can influence the world. That's true of anyone really, if your attitude is positive. If the ritual allows you to shed your negativity and focus on making your life what you want. That would be "magic" working.

Telltale. It is a bit woo. Been several decades since I read it, but I remember the magic being practical psychology acted out and recognized as such, a kind of symbolic communication with the subconscious. Got caught with the book at work and a nutty fundie told everyone I was a devil worshiping satanist (no one believed her); she demanded I state whether I believed in Lavey (stupid question), I said I believed he was a real person who lived and wrote a book.
Kathryn Geeslin that's pretty much why I read it in private. It's a whole lot easier to read than the actual Christian bible though. I think they might have used a different word than magic. It might not have the same supernatural connotations. But they also explicitly state that any effect on the real world would be due to unknown knowledge of how the universe works. That's at least plausible as I'm sure about the fact we hardly know anything about the true nature of it.

LaVey is a troll and the book says as much. Christianity keeps Satanism in business. LaVey was an eccentric carney with a flair for the dramatic. It's all poking fun at "real" religions.

I actually consider myself a mixture between the first two because I agree with morals from both. Most of my family is Christian and they don’t know that I consider myself a satanist, but it’s mainly for my own safety. Thank you for educating people on this subject and showing the difference! There's also a Satanist branch that literally worship Satan...they're called "theistic satanists" and I've actually been solicited by one Jehovah's Witness-style on the internet.
I don't get why anyone would want to be a theistic Satanist...it's one thing to not believe in Satan, but it's weird to believe in him as the Bible describes him and then want to worship him. I think they're probably just edgelords, though.

The story of God casting down Satan is the same but Satan is viewed as the good guy.
The idea of Satan being all good but weaker than God and God being a powerful dickhead fits the random chaos of our world a lot better than the traditional Christian version.
Yup, in my experience they read the bible and see Yahweh as a psychopathic tyrant, and see Satan as the giver of free will (afterall, how could we have such before we eat the fruit from the tree of knowledge to learn about good and evil, if you believe we weren't created with any knowledge of such or ability to learn it).
They basically view the bible as a propaganda spin story on biblical events to try and paint Yahweh's horrific acts in a positive light and see Satan as our liberators from oppression under him.
I don't believe any of it, but if you're going to accept the bible as true, the only rational starting point is that the character of Yahweh as described in the Bible is the villian.
There's a branch of Satanism that worships Satan but not the Christian Satan... it is a spiritualist religion where the lead deity happens to be called Satan. Their first point is to show that the Christian form of Satan is derived from the Jewish Ha'Shatan (The Advisory, a Jewish angel God uses to test Man) and that the similarity in English name is a coincidence
Most Theistic satanists reject the idea of an all good god and an all evil satan. Besides, if you read the bible, satan doesnt really stick out as that bad a guy, especially when telling the truth about the tree of knowledge.

As a gay man who listens to metal music and plays video games like shin Megami tensei, shin Megami tensei persona, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy and Silent Hill I would have been metaphorically crucified back in those days. No I was never afraid of demons. On the contrary I was a cringey edgelord as a little kid and I thought that stuff was cool. Thank you for making these videos. I never really connected with my religion and when I decided to leave it for good I faced a lot of backlash from my family and friends. They didn’t get it and told me I was going through a teenage phase or that I just wasn’t “praying hard enough”. My mom still tells me about how my grandmother had an experience with a possessed doll, and how someone in my family is actually possessed by demons. She believes that ghosts aren't real, but simultaneously believes that they are real, because they're actually demons trying to trick people into believing the immortality of the soul, which JWs don't believe. So be me, a child who is prone to having hallucinations in the dark. I remember being in bed and seeing red dots hover around my room, hearing children's laughter and pots clanging outside my door, and even a full on demon dart across in the mirror (pale white, hairless, pointy ears, fangs, bony, looked like a vampire corpse). When I come down for a drink in the middle of the night, I still sometimes see translucent apparitions darting toward me out of the darkness.
I've never been formally diagnosed, but whatever it is I have, being taught that demons are real as a child certainly didn't help!

I’ve had weird dreams like that too, especially with aliens. Once I dreamt that aliens abducted me and wanted to eat me. But I escaped and destroyed the leader who happened to be a giant plant shaped like a watermelon. I also had a weird dream where a Nordic like alien stood at the side of my room. It had a color identification and told me that there was a bunch of colors that I couldn’t see anywhere but in a dream. Then they brought me with them to see a clock in the middle of the space, they said, everything will be ok, but don’t touch that clock. Just don’t touch the clock. I have odd dreams.

Whenever they want to pass out Bibles in school or something they say "It's okay it's open to everyone.". Then the Satanic Temple says "Really? Because, we have these coloring books and..." "Did we say we were going to pass out Bibles? No, we shouldn't have religion in schools." I don't know much about them but I certainly see the need for them. Thanks ST.

I go to a Catholic school. I sometimes make demonic rituals with pentagrams, sacrifices (not animals, plants, we’re too sensitive to kill animals), and a little bit of Latin (I’m the only Latin speaker though). We haven’t gotten in trouble yet, but we’ve had a few close calls.

I have always found this to be too specific. It specifies non-humans, and the implications here are rather disturbing.
AGrayPhantom it means that humans can be dicks by their own will and killing them can be fine (self defense, killing a child rapist or a torturer or basically anybody that hurt you or your loved ones, please apply common sense) , but animals are not sentient, so you shouldn't hurt them for being dicks.

Hey! As a LaVeyan Satanist, I'd like to explain lesser magic and greater magic. Lesser magic is simply utilising aesthetics to get your own way - trying to look or dress a certain way to get a desired outcome from people. Greater magic is ritualistic, yes, but we don't see it as anything supernatural. It's a form of psychodrama focused on letting out stress. We use it for therapeutic purposes. Other than that minor slip up, your video is perfect!

This is a fairly good video! Satanism usually fall into three groups of:
1) Atheistic/LaVeyan satanism (telltale does a fair enough job of explaining this),
2) Theistic/spiritual satanism - As you might suspect it is here is where we a literal belief in a Satan or devil!
Note that one of the few things that most of us satanists actually agree on is that Satanism is about self worship in the sense of a) if it makes the individual happy and no else is negatively then do it and b) Anton Szandor LaVey himself said, "Satan demands study not worship"! I wish I could find the clip that he said this but I can't find it anywhere on TH-cam like I use to but either it got buried or deleted!
3) Independent/Self styled satanists - Basically this group tends to overlap the other two, for example there are those who subscribe to LaVey's philosophy and ideas on lesser Magick but not greater Magick followed by those who sees themselves as theistic but tend to have there own brand! Yet there are those like the order of nine angles and night stalker Richard Ramirez. In fact a good example of independent satanism I have found has been Postmodern Satanism and has been placed in book form with that vary name given. The author is Jason King and the other book is titled Pandemonium: the First Book of Cain and the best value is the deluxe edition of Postmodern Satanism which Jason places both volumes into one, though you could still purchase both as individual and separate volumes you'll just have to fork over extra money for the two! Though I see myself as a Satanist I'm probably somewhere in the third group but this essay of a comment is long enough without me jumping down this philosophical rabbit hole! But I will say that I believe Jason is honestly on to something here and he seems genuine enough!
The pentagram is also a Wiccan symbol. It’s usually depicted with the lower point up. However, one of the formal “denominations” uses the upside down one to depict a level of development.

Hi! I'm an ex-JW. I started following your channel after I saw Lloyd's interview of you (and vice versa). I've watched quite a few of your videos now and, I like them.
But, this video... this was... HILARIOUS! And, accurate, I think. I saw a TH-cam video of an on air interview of LaVey and I came away from that video thinking LaVey was a pretty cool guy. At least, he was WAY more respectful and polite with the interviewer than the interviewer was with him. The interviewer - who I assume was "Christian" - was a total A$$ to Mr. LaVey.

I love watching your videos as it helps me learn about other religions as I wasn't raised religious, thank god (pun intended). The only time I ever went to church was with my neighbor so my parents could have some time to themselves. We had some kind of "Bible Class" but this was a Baptist church so I don't think it was actually the Bible, though we did have to recite different parts of whatever we read. Recently, my mormon friend from school handed me a book of mormon because he "knew how interested I was in learning about other religions". Cool, but if he starts asking me if I believe in that shit I'm going to be dipping out before he tries to convert me lol. Also, nice new drawings for this video! Spot on!

I have to comment on the first part: The fear of darkness.
It is little more than the fear of the unknown, the thoughts of all the possibilities running rampant, as you are unable to spot potential danger. In its basic nature, the void of darkness merely amplifies all thoughts, which, as you apparently experienced, lends itself quite easily to manipulation. Being told, that there indeed is something to be feared beyond your sight obviously steers your thoughts towards the negative, the potential dangers lurking in the dark.
If, however, you manage to control your thoughts, the darkness can become your ally, allowing you to concentrate and think better. In a way, control over the darkness can be freeing, as it becomes easier to forget the physical limits of what is possible.
You can use it as a tool or have it be used against you. Either way, it doesn't have an inherent nature, but rather adopts the one, its user gives it.
I never understood why people think light represents good and dark represents evil, when it is light, that can permanently blind you to the truth, bringing harm to you, while the darkness acts like a harmless blanket, a canvas for you to draw on and feel your way around in to find the truth.

I'm going to show this to my sister, she's learning about satanism in her religion class and I doubt her catholic teacher is unbiased on the topic. On the other hand, it's kinda cool that her teacher even talks about it, I didn't really hear about satanism until after I graduated.
If I recall correctly, I think the whole "lair" and "destroy them" talk was added in. Lavey wasn't as dramatic originally.

In my country one woman was acused of witchcraft and kidnaping in the internet, and got killed by people in the streets, they were arrested and most of then got 40 years in prison.
I looked up "satanist person" in google images and Andy Beirsack, (more commonly known as Andy Sixx or Andy Black) the lead singer of Black Veil Brides (my favorite band) came up.
I had a friend who had an irrational fear when someone was behind them. When asked about why they said that in her previous life she died by getting stabbed in the back. I didn't believe it but am just here to giving a personal example of a weird thing out of many that I keep running into.

If you read a bit more into the LaVey side, the "magic" they're talking about is more akin to science and practical thinking. It's like, "Hey, you just gained from science, so don't tell people that science doesn't work. It does, and if you deny it in the future, you will lose your undiluted wisdom." They're not referring to literal magic.

At my school, this girl, lets call her vanessa, was tryjng to be my friends friend. She new my friend, lets call her Kat, was an atheist. Vanessa kept trying to convince kat that she could see Satan and they wanted to speak to kat. It got so bad kat had to show her the meaning of atheism a gew times, and i had to... "talk some sence" into Vanessa.

I have a friend who is satanist who gave me paperwork in high school to understand. It helped me understand what's really going on.
The thing I am confused about is every satanist I've met is that they tell me it's about self worship treating others as you would yourself.
