    This is what M43 is all about, a great little lens with a 1.7 aperture weighing only 130 grams and a reasonable price.

    • @nodavood
      @nodavood 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a myth that you get smaller lenses on M43. You need to convert both the aperture and focal length for, say, full frame equivalent comparison. You cannot gather more light by changing the sensor size. You cannot cheat physics. Otherwise, we wouldn't have needed the giant telescopes of the world. We could have just changed their sensor sizes. Two lenses on any system, with equal capabilities (e.g. depth of field, bokeh, noise level, fov, ...) have the same amount of glass and weight.

    • @CheapCharlieChronicles
      @CheapCharlieChronicles 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@nodavood the aperture of the glass is the same in light gathering, only the depth of field changes. The sensor's light gathering characteristics is treated separately from the lens.

      @1barnet1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@CheapCharlieChronicles No it's not just look at the mathematics of the F-stop.
      It's focal length/Aperture diameter = F Stop. So in order to have similar image quality with M43 you'd need faster glass. That said F1.7 is fantastic for an wide angle lens like this. It's more or less equal to the 12mm f2 rokinon on Fuji or Sony apsc.
      And with that AF performance and build quality it's easily worth the premium. Comparing prices to equiv. lenses in fullframe is often ridiculous as those bodies tend to be much more expensive and in most cases heavier.
      "This is what M43 is all about, a great little lens with a 1.7 aperture weighing only 130 grams and a reasonable price."
      I second that, i would've bought it for my girlfriend if she hadn't moved to Fujifilm like myself.
      This is indeed an lens that caters to M43 strengths. Just like the 45mm F1.8 oly and 20mm she used to have.

      @@1barnet1 fancy doing a simple test at the same settings on mft, aps-c and full frame?
      I've never ever seen the image get darker on smaller sensor. F stop is simply light transmission. Every single time I compare it, the amount of light transmitted to the sensor is identical (within the margin of error of cheap photo lenses, obviously, as opposed to T-stops being more objective)
      I I did not have a looming deadline and parenting duties, I'd be happy to make a demonstration ;)
      Depth of field, obviously, is a different matter, same as focal length.

    with a sensor like OM1, the day where we need a Full Frame for low light is no longer far away.
    with f1.7/1.8 primes like this, M43 would be a killer platform to shoot on for mostly everyone.
    Let Full Frame handle the bokehheads because right now, I think M43 could serve at least 95% of photographers and videographers who cares more about composition and story than a blurred background.

    • @youknowwho9247
      @youknowwho9247 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is an f/3.5 equivalent lens. Crop factor applies to aperture just as much as focal length. MFT is and will always be useless for low light shooting, because physics can't be cheated. Shrinking the sensor does not give smaller lenses magic powers. Fast glass does not exist for MFT, because fast in proper terms would mean f/0.7, which is f/1.4 full frame equivalent. No, this is not just bokeh, it's low light performance as well. Anyone who says the opposite has no clue what they're talking about.

      @@youknowwho9247 This is an f1.7 lens, stop saying nonsense you heard who knows where. If you mount the full frame Nikkor Z 50mm f1.8 lens on an APS-C camera like the Nikon Z50, the lens is still f1.8. You're suggesting that the Nikkor Z 35mm f1.8 on the Z50 would perform better than the Nikkor 35MM F/1.8 G DX, which is smaller and designed for APS-C cameras. AND THAT'S FALSE: the same amount of light would hit the APS-C sensor with both lenses.
      What changes is just the depth of field, as the crop factor forces you to change the distance from the subject if you want to keep the same field of view. The low light performance is directly related to sensor size and technology (BSI, stacked, etc). The bigger the sensor, the bigger is the pixel (or photosite) and the more light it gathers. It's plain simple.

    Great review as always guys! I am interested in this lens, I am just waiting for it to become available in the UK to see the price here. I have been in a couple of situations recently where I was shooting with my GH6 and Olympus 12-40 and at 12mm it wasn't wide enough to get everything I wanted in the frame and I couldn't move the camera back any further to get everything in the shot. Also there have been times in the past were I was taking photos and videos of buildings with my GH5 and that wider FOV would have been very useful, especially the f/1.7 when shooting indoors with more confined spaces. I am also interested in astrophotography and this lens looks like it could be good for that too.

    Nice video! This lens seems like a no-brainer. I have a GH5 which I bought years ago. I’ve shot a lot of interviews with several cameras over the past 15 years as a corporate video producer. Skin tone is critical in that work. IMHO the GH5 has peculiar issues with skin tone. I noticed here that Panasonic hasn’t quite resolved this with the GH6. I hoped the new VLog and the new sensor addressed that. Sort of the main reason I would upgrade.

    Hey Chris, i’m a little stuck…have to chose between the 12mm f1.4 or a combination 9mm and 15mm f1.7. Do you ever had the chance to compare them…optical wise (i really understand, the focal lengths are different 😉)? Better two lenses or the faster one for the same budget…

    A comparison between the Panasonic 9mm f1.7 and the Olympus 8mm f1.8 would be nice. I suppose that the "linear distortion" that they say the new Panasonic has, can come in handy on occasions when people appear, I sometimes use wide angles for portraits with architecture in the background, but on other occasions, I suppose that if you buy a super wide angle, a bit of extreme distortion is what you want, so.... I don't know which one to choose 😅

    C&J, we like you 3000x of a Noct. Also this lens seems to be a good replacement for my 9-18 Oly, since I use that little guy in ultra-wide anyway, most of the time :)

    Very interesting lens I think it could be a perfect lens for g100 to have a compact and good combination for vlogging.

    Wonderful review on this lens! I just picked one up, and notice that I hear the autofocus pretty audibly when I half press on the shutter. Do you notice this on yours? Or should I be concerned that this is a defect on mine?

    hello, I have a pen-f with 30mm sigma and 42.5 nocticron and I need a compact lens that is hard to detach from my camera like the leica 9mm 1.7 or the leica 15mm 1.7 or the 20mm? I hope but not I think the 9mm has the same softness and leica look ... anyway I am interested in the color rendering ... advice?

    I'm using Panasonic LUMIX G7 as a webcam and was looking for a better suited lense. My 14mm lense is still a bit too close up/zoomed in on me for my liking, based on the distance/position the camera has to be placed, within the boundaries of my set up and desk space. I take it this 9mm lense would be ideal and 'push me back' further?

    Looks a great lens which could replace my 8-18. More to the point, what's that bag you were carrying? And will it take a G9 with a couple of primes, including that 9mm?

    Now I need a compact MFT camera to use this lens. OM1 and GH6 are great but where is new G9 and G7?

  • @WalkingHeadPro
    @WalkingHeadPro 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    would be cool to see a 9 or 12mm Leica with Power O.I.S. Coupled with internal IBIS from a gh5/gh6 and the wide lens + IS, it might make a gimbal obsolete for the given setup. Not sure why they don't do this. I understand wide lenses are inherently more stable, but there is still jitter and shake present.

  • @mcronfpv8736

    The lumix S 18mm 1.8 was announced by Lumix, but they release the m43 equivalent first. Anyway great job Pana, that's the MFT spirit... The heavy 1.7 zooms are prety stupid imo, since they weight the same as their ff equivalent.
