    That drummer is Chester Thompson, long time drummer for Genesis/Phil Collins, and that drum fill he does on More Trouble Everyday was heard by Phil Collins back in the 70's and totally inspired him. It's why he asked Chester to drum for him, and was likely the inspiration for Phil Collins's totally awesome fill on his mega hit: In The Air Tonight!

    • @todddouglass870
      @todddouglass870 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That drum fill was Genesis/Phil Collins signature sound during their live shows. Not only copied the fill from Frank, but took the drummer too (I'm not a Phil Collins fan).

    In my opinion, of all of Frank's incredible line ups, this was is best. The 74 band really were amazing. Andy, Eat That Question, Peaches En Regalia and especially RDNZL are absolute must listen to Frank Tracks, enjoy your journey it keeps getting better because as well as the studio versions, you have the fact that every live version recorded of every track is completely unique and each of his line ups played distinctly.

    "Son of Orange County" is a song about Nixon ( I believe..) and "More Trouble" is about the Watts Riots/Race Riots L.A. was having in the mid & late 60's. Frank wrote that song back in like '66-'67 and this performance is like '74. Thanks Teez!

    • @abelashes2676
      @abelashes2676 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Son of Orange County is Oh No from Weasels Ripped My Flesh with altered lyrics, so they refer to Nixon...then the segue has bits of The Orange County Lumber Truck from Weasels Ripped My Flesh and What's The Ugliest Part of Your Body? from We're Only In It For The Money...then a completely rearranged Trouble Everyday from Freak Out!

    • @Civilizashum
      @Civilizashum 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@abelashes2676 Originally Oh No was directed at John Lennon for 'All You Need is Love':
      All your love -
      Will it save me?
      All your love -
      Will it save the world
      From what we can't understand?
      Oh no,
      I don't believe it
      And in your dreams
      You can see yourself
      As a prophet
      Saving the world
      The words from your lips
      I just can't believe
      You are such a fool

      This filmed version is slightly different than the ROXY Lp . On that album Frank says , " I am not a crook . " People then knew that he was ridiculing Nixon , but by now the reference is not caught by most people . July , 1974 was when Nixon , surrounded by scandal , resigned the presidency . He admitted nothing , and made his untrue statement just before quitting . The original version of this song , called OH NO , had nothing to do with Nixon or his problems .

  • @todddouglass870
    @todddouglass870 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    At 1:45 Frank speaks. In the studio version he says "I am not a crook!" (Richard Nixon reference, I can't believe you are such a fool). Here he says "Well why don't you sharpen it then!" Frank's songs often had inside jokes, and references to other songs. I haven't heard what "why don't you sharpen it then" means. My guess is to make a note sharp, or to tighten up a musical sequence. He used #2 pencils to write his scores and he would sharpen them. Out on tour on the bus he would be writing out scores that looked perfect, no erasures, looked like it came off a laser printer, straight out of his head. Anyway if anyone has any insight into this phrase I would love to hear it.
    At 4:44 is a great drum fill which Phil Collins "borrowed" for his live performance signature. He also took the drummer Chester Thompson too.

    When you said "you just got to get it ... if you don't get it, you ain't going to like it", you said it all. It took me a while to get it (I've been listening to Zappa (off and on) for more than a half century), and I never get tired of listening to his music .... and, yes, I also believe that Frank was a creative genius ..... may he rest in peace ...

    • @MusicLover-rt4bs
      @MusicLover-rt4bs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is the truth. If you get it, you are in for a wonderful, talent-laden ride. I consider myself lucky in that I got it immediately. One play through of Apostrophe and have been hooked ever since. That was 1981. Was lucky enough to see hime twice. 81 and 84 tours.

    • @davidzimmerli489
      @davidzimmerli489 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MusicLover-rt4bs You were lucky. I saw Frank three times at different stages of his brilliant musical "career". The first time was in Greenwich Village, before he had made a name for himself as a stellar composer/performer/band leader. Frank and the original Mothers of Invention were standing casually outside the ridiculously small and narrow Village "theater", and I walked right past them into the dark little theater. Within a couple of minutes, Frank made his way down the middle aisle to the small, dingy stage. During the fairly brief set, the Mothers, at one point, stopped playing, and just sat on their amplifiers and stared at us. At another point, they pelted the 20 or so of us in the rather sedate audience with grapes! Crazy!

    Zappa was the master of sound and vision, but you've ALWAYS got to appreciate the collection of some of the best musicians ever to hit the planet:
    - Napoleon Murphy Brock / Tenor Sax, Flute, Vocals
    - George Duke/ Keyboards, Zil, Tambourine, Vocals
    - Tom Fowler /Bass
    - Chester Thompson /Drums
    - Ruth Underwood /Percussion

Here are just two: Black Napkins w/ the Abnuceals Emuuhka Orchestra live 1975 and Cruising for Burgers also live but in 1976. Do a search you'll find em & lots more !!! Enjoy...

    It's way past my bedtime but there's always time for Frank. Thanks and keep on with Zappa - only 70 or so more LPs to listen to! You should drop into some of his ealy work like Help I'm A Rock, It Can't Happen Here or Brown Shoues Don't Make it for some deep dives. His LP We're Only In It For The Money does need to be listened to straight thru from front to back and is a very deep dive.

    I saw the comments were blocked on Willy the Pimp. Perhaps people mentioned Zappa's genius friend Captain Beefheart who sang that song and also made crazy genius music. If you listen to Beefheart I suggest two later LPs that are more accessible 'Spotlight Kid' and 'Clear Spot' the early stuff is very important but very hard to take at first. Beefheart is vocally inspired by Howling Wolf.

    This was Frank's 3rd band . Commercialism was creeping in . I recommend his earlier , scruffier bands . BAND 1 - FREAK OUT , ABSOLUTELY FREE , MONEY , LUMPY GRAVY , UNCLE MEAT , CRUISING WITH RUBEN , BURNT WEENY, WEASELS , HOT RATS . BAND 2 ... CHUNGA's , FILLMORE 71 , 200 Motels soundtrack and well , thats the best stuff right there . No weak filler type songs . That came later . WE MISS YOU UNCLE FRANK !

    • @zendakk
      @zendakk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Considering the prolific output he consistently had and the insane amount of material never even released, it's a bit ridiculous to suggest he needed any "filler" songs. And if he truly wanted to be commercial, he could have used any of the many throwaway 2 bar motifs and develeped them into calculated top 10 hits. But he didn't. You're free to have your faves of course.
