Nice video Joe...Had my first sail ever the other day on a 14 that I bought. Wind was extremely light, 3-4 kts and I learned something very interesting. I was trying to sheet in to obviously get some speed out of the boat but nothing was happening. The low wind would just hit the sail and stop. I then tried sheeting out and that's when I started to pick up some speed??? In that light of a wind condition, "loosening" the sail gave it the ability to "capture" the light breeze and give the sail a nice curve. I also tried playing with the traveller a tad to optimize. I probably ended up getting 5-6 kts of speed out of her on a glassy lake and I'm hooked!!! On my way out again today...
Nice, good to hear that you're hooked already! Yes over sheeting the mainsail is going to stop the boat, always better to be a bit too loose than a bit too tight.

If it's a sandy beach i would go straight up - come in on the back of a wave - not with one behind you for a more controlled landing. If the beach has stones or rocks then the latter will be kinder to your boat.

thx for your great vids! how important is it to carry speed into the tack? I have gotten stalled often enough by going too hard on the rudders (and killing speed), but I see in this vid the boat looks pretty well stalled during your tack but you still get underway np post tack. Is there a sweetspot in terms of rudder angle to maintain speed through the tack?
Hi Joseph, thanks for the video. Planning to have a catamaran at mooring during the summer 3-4 months. Is it that bad for a cat or it can take it without breaking things? Big thanks. Learned a lot with you (Canada, Québec)

A dolphin striker (an older term for a martingale boom or simply a martingale; sometimes called a striker) is a small vertical or near vertical ancillary spar spanning between the bowsprit and martingale thereby redirecting the tension in the forward end of the martingale slightly more vertically. This vertical component is necessary to more effectively oppose the forestays' mostly upward tension on the forward end of the bowsprit than would be the case in the absence of the dolphin striker.

How do you prevent losing the boat if you get knocked or thrown off of the boat? Seems like that could easily happen if you hit a wake, aren't watching the boom, or even just slip and lose your balance.
Hi Todd.
I'll talk about this in today's Live Q+A (1730 greek time but available to watch afterwards)
the main safety that you have is that you always hold onto the mainsheet.
I've made some videos testing what would happen:
Falling off SOLO light wind

Falling off SOLO medium wind

Falling off SOLO strong wind

Hello, thank you for the nice video, do you know good places in Europe to have some lessons and Hobie cat renting ?
Here is pretty good -www.wildwind.co.uk
Where was this recorded? Lovely windy bay
The is Vassiliki, Lefkas, Greece
@@JoyriderTV I've been learning to sail in a laser dinghy , next week I will try a hobbie cat for the first time here in Costa Rica. Your videos are very helpful and awesome 👌 thank you very much!!!
@@evarela12 great stuff! I'm sure that you're going to love it!
so how would u do this (i.e. the launching + start part only) from a fixed dock? i have to launch from a concreate ramp directly off a trailer. i was thinking a sort of spring line from the bow tangs and tramp pileons to tie to dock after pushing back from trailer before getting underway
maybe check out this recent Q+A where we talked about this: th-cam.com/users/live4ISXRbRbw3M?feature=share
thx for your great vids! how important is it to carry speed into the tack? I have gotten stalled often enough by going too hard on the rudders (and killing speed), but I see in this vid the boat looks pretty well stalled during your tack but you still get underway np post tack. Is there a sweetspot in terms of rudder angle to maintain speed through the tack?
Speed is not so important.
I just made this video th-cam.com/video/rD3pCPRjly0/w-d-xo.html
That should help.
very nice video
Thanks
Hi Joe -do you recommend or even endorse putting an A-spinnaker on an 18 foot Prindle cat? Thx mate! Allan - USA cali
I think that would be a very good upgrade - I certainly don't see why not.
Thank you 🤙🤙🤙
You are very welcome!
Hi Joseph, thanks for the video. Planning to have a catamaran at mooring during the summer 3-4 months. Is it that bad for a cat or it can take it without breaking things? Big thanks. Learned a lot with you (Canada, Québec)
It's good if you can take it out of the water periodically to check tfor leaks and wash off any growth!
Personally i wouldn't leave the boat floating for such a long period.
Great video! Been binge watching you guys for some weeks now. I plan to come over to this beautiful place and go on a blast with you guys.
Being a speed freak and coming from windsurfing, would you recommend a Hobie 16 for beginners or is there a cat that is better suited?
The 16 is definitely the best - it will keep you interested for life - a little tricky at first but with the right technique it's a good choice - just not too much wind too soon.
@@JoyriderTV Great news (considering the 16 is also not very expensive to get your hands on)
Thanks for the answer and enjoy the remaining season. Next year I hope I will make it to you guys.
Hello! Which beach in Brazil is suitable for learning to sail?
Unfortunately, I don't know. I've never been to Brazil.
Good video. Just tell them grommets to pull on that main as hard as they f'ing can, or go home
Ha! 🤩
What happens if you fall off . Serious question
Hi, that's such a good question that I've made several videos on the topic.
You can see them here:

I don't get the 6 people who gave this video a thumbs down, 🤔🤔🤔
Maybe cat sailing just isn't for everyone?
What boat where you sailing at the start?
that was the C2 F18 the rest was of course a Hobie 16
@@JoyriderTV ok thanks joe!
Thank you for the video Joe! I'm sitting here in Europe dreaming of sailing my first cat one day :)
You can do it!
Can one cross the Atlantic with a Hobie 18 Cat. ?
It's been done on a modified F18 - you'd need a reliable support boat.
@@JoyriderTV I'd like to watch that. How many days did it take them to complete the Atlantic crossing?
@@Lyondegreat here's someone who went further th-cam.com/video/3AYNv2IR_5A/w-d-xo.html
Is this australia
Vassiliki, Lefkas, Greece
Great vid, but for gods sake, spend $5 on a mic wind sock!
Yes, agreed - this was about 3 years ago. Since then, the audio quality has reached studio quality!
"the dolphin striker" ?!?! 🤣
@@JoyriderTV the name seems quite revealing in what it does from time to time 🐬💥🤔
Is that lago di garda, italy?

If you let me know which language you speak. I can add subtitles

First boat shall not be a katamaran? Laser better ...
Learning on a mono is ideal but there's no reason why you can't learn on a cat.
Rock the catamaran for long term. I started on a H16 as a kid and was soloing at 16. My dad had 1-lesson with the guy who sold it to him. If I had Joe 35 years ago, I would have been expert, but it was just me, the wind, and a skinny 30-mile long lake. I just got back in it after more than 30-years and Joe made it easy. Get involved in social media with local Hobie and Multihull Groups. They are awesome in Arizona and want you to join them.
The back noise is terrible. The wind on the mic is awful. It hurts the ears..couldn't finish
Apologies for that.
I will remake the video so that it can be more pleasant with good audio.
