Future is pretty much what happens when you have a hero that experiences recurrent traumatic episodes and deals with them by fixing other people´s issues. Thats one of the reasons why he can´t let his friends go (besides loving them, naturally), he´s afraid he has a singular purpose he wont be able to fulfilil. This series is like if he just came out of the ground like a gem would, and he resembles the old pink (before she went good) a lot, because his family (Garnet, Pearl and Amethyst) also put him through a lot of trauma (not like they wanted to, and they had issues too, but they still did)
you can take this however you like I just want to point out that Steven wasn't necesarrily great at communicating, he was great at listening to other people's struggles and trying to remedy them. There's been very few moments where Steven has said out loud how he feels about stuff and usually he's either alone (Rose's room) or avoiding the question (The Question). This mixed with all the struggles he's been through got to him and it's starting to show

Fun fact: Only really visible on the Funko Pop (Not entirely sure if its only supposed to be for the pop figure or Steven in general), but Steven's hair when viewed from the back looks like a rose.
We’re getting to the point of the show where that pink glow on Steven’s skin is gradually turning into more of a ‘problem power’ than a ‘solution power’.

It's such a subtle touch but the dome starting with a diamond and ending with a star-shaped hole- the shape symbolism in SU is on another level, man.
steven trough this season is dealing with his trauma, something he has bottle up since a kid. and now he is not comunicating, exploding, saying hurtfull things... "you are just learning from the only role model you`ve got". Steven apologise to cactus steven. but when the gems have ever done that to Steven?
Funny thimg about cactus steven's leaving, you could read it as steven has overgrown his nest and should set off on his own since cactus steven is a reflection of him

It's more of the opposite. His powers are going haywire because he's having a mental breakdown.
They should've called this Steven Universe: Trauma
It basically just asks what if Steven were real and the one thing he couldn't see needed attention and change was himself.
I can't put my cat down without it seriously doing a number on my mental health... Imagine fixing an inherited royal position in a centuries long conspiracy/war on an intergalactic level. And you gotta fix it. At like... 14.
Plus, it shows a good parallel to reality. There are some people that are super awesome at helping others. Some will even break themselves to do it. But fail to get themselves that same help when they need it. Hence Steven's denial. It's all a bit real, sometimes. Especially given the "always save the day" stuff from before where everything is saved by an empathetic talk and a hug.
Just because the war is over doesn't mean the war is over...
