Or gives classes even more utility and uses. I remember in TFC where the offensive role of the defensive sniper/demo class would be to function as a human catapult for their teammates. Snipers and Demomen could launch their teammates across the map as friendly knockback wasnt disabled like friendly damage.

Great video! Your script was very well prepared and engaging. Re: missed exceptions, the scorch shot applies the strafe lock of airblast to players that don't own the projectile. Meaning while you can surf it you won't really be able to airstrafe until you land. It's especially noticeable if you ever get airshot by one
Damage surfing is like making an omelet, it chains all the ingredients together to make an awesome clip, where everyone at the end says something along the line of "I shouldn't be alive/Bro, I thought I was dead".
its worth noting that as a heavy you take (I think) 50% less knockback than any other class, and that sentries have a rather huge amount of knockback in relation to the actual damage they deal per shot, so surfing off sentries is very effective and fun
There's a clip I can't seem to find that where a heavy goes flying near horizontally accross the map using sentry surfing and getting an kill with it. It's glorious.
In my opinion, damage surfing is one of the most fun mechanics to learn in this game. You can use it for dodging, sure, but my personal favorite way of damage surfing is going for surfstabs as a spy. Kunai being almost the only weapon in the game that removes the downside of surfing damage if used well (health loss doesn't matter if you get the stab from the surf) makes it an actual reliable option for getting the stab. If you put the practice to learn it, that is. Great vid overall!
damage surfing is awesome because when someone complains about explosives being way too hard to fight, i know that they dont know how to damage surf :]
Surfing enemy damage is so immensely satisfying when you pull it off, doubly so when the enemy attacking you isn't expecting it and you pull off a clean getaway.
I feel like an important thing that was left out, probably because it seems so intuitive but for some people it might still be helpful, if you're trying to surf a grenade or a rocket for example, and it hits you in the upper half of your body, you're just going to get flung into the ground and not go anywhere.
My favorite part of TFC was that you coulnt just damage boost yourself but also your teammates as friendly knockback wasnt disabled like friendly fire. The more burst damage your weapon would do to a enemy the more knockback it would do on a teammate so it became common for Snipers and Demomen to catapult their teammates across the map. On some rounds i was just standing in the spawn exit, lining up pipes and detonated them under my teammates who were waiting in line like i was a teleporter. It was super fun to see their little legs spas out like a Scooby Doo cartoon as the animation would speed up with their momentum.
In the Explosive Segment: There's one class that makes surfing Explosives very reliable and a breeze. I'm surprised you didn't show or mention it at all, in your video. You did show a pyro clip in the beginning, where you jump off a rocket, but you didn't reflect it with your flamethrower. Airblasting explosives is the most controlled method to damage surf, when you're a good pyro, going incredible distances (if the skybox lets you) and surprising your enemies by closing the gap. Also, since the Scorch Shot bounces, it also inflicts a lot of knock back onto the enemy. And if you time your jumps correctly you can either surf off of it, or you'll burst into bits like a fiery pinata.
Great video. I just wouldn't call explosion surfing hard though, it is the most unreliable surf which technically makes it difficult, but just calling it unreliable and leaving it at that is more accurate. The execution from your part is fairly easy: in medium ranges, you can position yourself for the surf and the timing is trivial. In short ranges, you don't have time to reposition, so you only have to worry about jumping, and as long as you know the distance to the soldier, you can learn to instinctively time your jump after the rocket firing sound. And for the ranges you can't react, there's a high chance that the soldier won't bother aiming at your feet at all, he will probably just shoot straight at you because the collision boxes are huge in TF2.
I like to use steak and gloves as heavy, find a sentry and try and surf it. Even if I don't get kills, the enemy team will see a heavy flying with his gloves out.
I knew about damage surfing for a long time and only recently started using it more in game not it’s a habit even when playing other games that don’t have it lol
What do you think about binding jump+crouch to the same key (space bar) is it cheesing the game? Also do you think it is a worse way to rocket jump/surf than just manually pressing crouch and jump
1:10 I’m all for basic UI mods and freedom of choice, but completely removing the flamethrower and it’s flames from your field of vision literally seems like an exploit, and avoiding the intention of the game developers original design of it being visually overwhelming.
There is counterplay for single fire weapons which are just largely superior to full auto in tf2. Corner peeking is another category auto weapons suck in edit: also since the damage for something like a minigun always sends the surfer away from whete you are there is counterplay via your own positioning (they surf to somewhere undesirable or dont surf at all)
Surfing off someone's damage and market gardening them is scientifically proven to inflict crictical psychological damage to the victim.
My favorite thing in any game is having lots of movement tech especially unintentional bugs to exploit, it makes it even more fun

My favorite game mechanic ever 8) very nice guide on damage surfing
crouch jumping over their rocket and rocketing into hug range is the best way to gap close as fists of steel and panic attack heavy
That sounds so scary to have happen to you XD

Damage surfing is super fun and so clutch. Glad to get a bit more info on it!

Using to rocket to turn any slightly elavated surface into an Oahu coast. Getting the hanging of dmg surfing is so rewarding.
Self damage surf, like when you use grenade launcher on a dispenser/enemy up close
Great video :)

In my last match, I was just talking about how I need to learn how to surf! (Medic main btw) TYSM FOR THIS WE LOVE U SCARY

one of the most important (and advanced) technique for surviving against classes like soldier esp as low hp class like medic/sniper

the art of damage surfing -> the art of surfstabs
Heavy has knockback resistance, which makes it much more difficult to surf. You can still do it, but it's just harder to gain a ton of speed.
I love surfing with the shortstop because of the increase in push force taken
