- Riverdale did an episode where the "students" did a production of the musical Carrie, so, I wanted to compare it myself to one of my favorite productions of it (The Balagan theatre production in Seattle) instead of comparing to the original Off- Broadway production.

Also notice how Riverdale’s story was good in theory, but then the directors decided to have a brain malfunction and made it a meme
The sad part is some of the cast (Cami, Lili, Casey and K.J. for example) can actually sing really well, but Riverdale decides to use auto tune anyways.
Anne Boelyn I think technically they had to autotune KJ, he doesn’t have an American accent, so he had to sing in an American accent which is hard enough as it is.

I think it should be a mix like more powerful and frustrated at the beginning considering you begin the song on a relatively high belt but grow to be more vulnerable then back to powerful as she sings they will know her name it’s a journey song and should not be one note
That's how she was meant to do it bcz cherly doesn't like being vulnerable she wasn't meant to sing in vunerable
e that there is definitely too much auto tune, but in the moment in the show, cheryl was trying to prove that she was worthy of the lead part. so the way she sang it with power rather that vulnerability, made sense in the moment.

I think the biggest issue with Riverdales version is that the characters are just calmly “singing” at the top of their lungs. It makes it so much more obvious that they aren’t actually singing and it just jarring to see people look like they’re whispering to themselves while the audio has them screaming at the top of their lungs

I swear most of the people that prefer Riverdale probably have never listened to other performances of Carrie other than the one shown. And even then, these are just short clips. The overall performance is awesome, I especially like this theatre version of The Destruction's scene, Keaton did such a good job at that scene.
I prefer riverdale. And I’ve seen the entire Carrie performance. Yes, it was still great. But I personally prefer the riverdale version

I remember seeing a video on why the music in the Disney remakes suck and in that video they brough up how much Disney autotuned Emma Watson's voice to make it sound like theres no flaws (even though she did say that she legitimately auditioned for the role so she can most likely sing) and how it removes all the personality and emotion from the song (then they say why the original is good at not doing that as you can hear Paige O'Hara smiling at some points) and I feel like they did exactly that for all of the Riverdale musicals. A lot of the cast can actually sing, we know that, its just they've been autotuned to sound "perfect" that we don't feel anything from what they're singing, especially when you compare it to the live recording of Carrie in which you can see the cast members giving it all even if the recorded version is a dress rehearsal.
Sideways' video! I actually appreciate the animated movie's Little Town a lot more after I heard what he said about Paige O'Hara's performance (not that I didn't before). But I agree, I think some people don't understand that musical singing is a balance of both emotion and vocal control. If you get too emotional, it's really easy to lose vocal control, but if it's too controlled and "perfected", the emotion isn't there anymore. In a show like Riverdale (heavily edited and all), there's little to no chance of it sounding nearly as raw as a live production. It just doesn't fit, and I think they should stop trying to do everything, or at least consult a vocal coach or someone who works in theatre next time (if they already have, they clearly didn't do their job properly).

I get people like the studio version cuz even I’ll admit I’ll get annoyed when I can’t hear words clearly and have to listen to a recording to hear and understand them but there is no chance anyone could think Keaton’s version of “Carrie” is worse. Girl definitely ripped her vocal chords for that kinda belting power plz give respect where it’s due.
A technically talented singer doesn't rip her vocal chords🙄 unless she didn't get enough rest for her voice. Belting can be done in a healthy way, and that was not it.

It’s not the acting it’s just that Carie is supposed to be an outcast weirdo that’s not exactly attractive and that is what makes Carie so relatable to people. That is what makes us feel for her. i don’t rlly understand why people prefer the riverdale version. u can literally listen to the autotune in the songs, principally in the last note of carrie and in all the alice parts. u can listen that their voices sound rlly metallic, and that’s who u can listen to the autotune. it’s sad, cause some people of there can sing, like casey, lili and camilla. but the production put autotune in some stupid things. like, i think they put autotune in the last note of carrie to cut the vibrato of her voice, cause ir looks so flat and metallic. is rlly strange...
but we all have to understand that the seattle version was in live and had no autotune, so we had to see that voice cracks are rlly normal, because they sing like all nights!

And the voice cracks only make it better! I legitimately feel that the voice cracks are what make Keaton's Destruction the true version! It legitimately sounds like she's crying out, and it's usually just belted.

Most of the cast have really good voices, the creators just auto tuned them way to much.

I love Keaton’s voice, she is such a good embodiment of Carrie. She sounded a bit vocally exhausted in her clip of Carrie but belting like that is bound to cause days where your voice isn’t at its best. Cheryl’s Carrie is not it. I understand they wanted to do Carrie but it’s a high show and if your actors can’t hit the notes then pick something else. Taking Carrie down the octave is just...no

YES THE SEATTLE VERSION HELL YES! That's the version that got me into the musical and the movie, and book. And it's one of my favorite properties.

Totally agreed. The modern version looks too much Next To Normal or any other angsty teen-family drama. The weird costumes and 80s sound of the original made it stand out.

What you've done here is great. I've worked in musical theatre from 1974 to 2015, and have been a collector of musicals of all sorts for several decades now. I kind of do this same thing when I pop on a cast recording. I usually listen to two or more recordings of a show to see how numbers are changed from one production to the next. What you have done here is very much appreciated. So, thank you for taking the time to put this comparison together. Also, I have the video of the Balagan Theatre production of "Carrie", and have to admit that it's one of the best amateur productions I've come across. And, I have to say that same thing about their production of "Annie" as well.
It's great to know that there are others out there who actually appreciate this musical. I find it sad that such an amazing musical has never received the acclaim and respect that so long overdue, simply because Stephen King wrote the story.

As someone who watches Riverdale (shudder) and follows the cast, I will say a lot of them actually have good voices. I don't think the song Carrie is best for Madelaine's range, but I thought she sounded lovely in the You Shine reprise. Also that show adds so much autotune it's ridiculous. And the choreo is the Heathers ep is.... something else.
Personally, I think Riverdale did Carrie the Musical pretty well. Heathers is....oof

I feel like somehow the songs actually fit the characters and showed different sides of them. And that applies to both Carrie and heathers. But they don’t really do them well. (Heathers). I feel like Carrie did more for the plot, cause it was semi understandable and they actually had an effective plot. But S3 was a train wreck anyways

I think the biggest reason Cheryl sounds the way she does is that they lowered the key. Her voice became dark and heavy and "robotic" sounding because while she may have not been able to do the original key of the song because it is so high, they clearly gave her a key that was so drastically low it didn't do her voice any justice. If they had just decided to give her some lessons with the song or choose a more appropriate key, it wouldn't sound like the slowmo filter on snapchat.

okay but the balagan theatre's carrie is SO POWERFUL like THAT BELT DAMN
So! I'm going into this completely blind! I have yet to watch the episode/Riverdale as a whole or Carrie so I'm here to give an unbiased opinion! Well, as unbiased as possible, I still have war flashbacks from the Heathers episode.
1rst clip Riverdale: Not too bad a singing though the girl in purple sounded slightly slurry or stuffed.
1rst clip Seattle: The harmonies were pretty good! Also, it looks like there's supposed to be a wider view from everyone instead of just two girls which I find interesting.
1rst clip: Overall I think both a decently even, though Seattle gives more world depth then Riverdale.
2nd clip Riverdale: The shorter girl was actually pretty good! It's just that the taller girl's voice contrasted with the shorter girl's voice because (I think) it was in head voice. I dunno it just sounded odd together. Though the choreography is MUCH better than whatever Heather's episode was. At least it is for now.
2nd clip Seattle: Oh wow! Both of the girl's singing was so checking talented! Also, Their harmonies work so much better! It's also important for me to mention that there is a lot more emotion with these two girls. Or at least, with the goth girl she seems more fired up and confident than the double sad Riverdale was going for.
2nd Clip: Overall, Seattle wins this one because of the better harmony and overall emotion, though Riverdale's version wasn't awful.
3rd clip Riverdale: Ok so the pronunciation for the song is weird as heck. It sounds super blunt, kind of like she's trying to portray a child singer. Also, there's little to no emotion in her singing as well as facial expression. It bothers me quite a bit.
3rd clip Seattle: Oh my! Her singing voice is so beautiful and satisfying to listen to! I absolutely love the facial execution and all the emotion portrayed in her voice!
3rd clip: Overall, Seattle won by a landslide, their character actually showed emotion instead of just singing. I also can't get over how weirdly the girl in Riverdale pronounced their lyrics.
4rth clip Riverdale: Yet again lack of emotions is there. The singing is better than the previous clip and the choreography was actually really fun to watch but everyone looked so serious and dead inside. The girl looked more pissed than smug and it threw off the vibe of the scene.
4rth clip Seattle: Ok this cast has some amazing voice talent! Also there so much emotion! It's really fun to watch and I'd honestly love to play this girl's character if I ever got the chance. There's also more participation from the other characters. You can tell who the scene is highlighting but the other characters still act like people and not mindless backups.
4rth clip: Overall Seattle definitely won! There's so much more to watch and enjoy than Riverdale's tired and emotionless version of the scene.
5th clip Riverdale: Ohh oh no... that lack of emotion is just... wow. So, what I also noticed is how NO ONE sounds really that excited, it sounds like they're trying to sound excited but they also don't feel like trying to sound excited. It's super distracting from what the scene is supposed to be, which sucks because the faces are actually pretty good this time. With the exception of the girl in the purple robe.
5th clip Seattle: Yes! Excitement is what we need here! I do think some of the voices sound a bit off together but it's not that distracting. The people sound like they're actually holding witty conversations and it's nice to see them get excited over what I'm going to assume is a party.
5th clip: Overall Seattle won by a LANDSLIDE, it seems that the further I go into this, the worse Riverdale becomes, which is interesting because the songs get more interesting as the story progresses so you'd THINK they'd try to pick up their act.
6th clip Riverdale: Not too bad, the emotion was there, it was pretty good. They seemed like they actually care for each other which seems to be the point of the entire song. The red head's voice sounded a bit awkward with the other girl's voice, though, that could be because of the male to female vocals needing to be changed.
6th clip Seattle: Oh I really hope this doesn't turn out to be like a JD and Veronica situation because I love how cute they act together! There seems to be really good chemistry between them and it's so cute to see how they look and giggle at each other!
6th clip: Overall, Seattle tips the Iceberg for top, only because there's just more chemistry that goes on between the two characters in that scene. It's just, so cute. Riverdale's wasn't awful though.
7th clip Riverdale: So the lack of emotion here is SO evident that it's not even funny. As soon as I heard Seattle's version I was shocked to see how there was SO much more sorrow in the other woman's song! Riverdale's looks so fake, and dead that it just makes me uncomfortable to watch.
7th clip Seattle: I love, so much emotion and sorrow form both parties, I can't even comprehend how much better it is than Riverdale's because the older woman actually sounds sorrowful!
7th clip: Overall, Seattle won this one on such a higher margin that it's not even a competition. There was so much more personality put into their version that Riverdale is barely noticeable!
8th clip Riverdale: Oh boy there is so much wrong with this scene. The choreography was really weird, like, why did they run into the auditorium and just sit in a circle of chairs? The hand movements and chair choreography were just strange. Also, the camera is in a super weird place above the circle. The amount of autotune used is just... outstanding, like, seriously why?
8th clip Seattle: Pretty voices all around! And I love love LOVE that choreography! It was just so fun to watch and well-executed in general.
8th clip: Overall, Seattle won because it was well executed and they didn't need fancy camera shots to look cool.
So, yeah, the Seattle version is amazing and I need to go listen to the Carrie soundtrack. Riverdale wasn't too bad this time, at least not compared to the outstandingly bad Heather's episode they tried to pull. Anyways, dunno if anyone will care to read this through but it now exists for your viewing pleasure.

Keaton Whittaker: kills it, is a queen, Raw talent in her voice, just amazing Cheryl: Sounds like a robot because they use too much auto tune and no human sounds like that and riverdale doesn’t know what raw talent is and they only know about auto tune and it doesn’t even look they’re really singing like wtf

For me, i have know Carrie with Riverdale. But i prefer the real version. The version Riverdale is like a makeup of the musical and i hate that. But thanks for Riverdale, because i know the musicals now. Like in Heathers, the story of a girl writing suicides notes in love with a guy who want burn their school.
Riverdale was just give me the way to go at the world of musicals.

Idk if its an unpopular opinion but I think riverdales carrie episode was better than the other musical episodes I mean it's like they took all the complaints about the carrie episode and tried even harder to ignore them in the other episodes😳😳😳
I honestly didn't have a problem with the Riverdale version because there's a thing called artistic license and they can change things to make it fit their style
To be honest this would have been my favorite musical episode out of all of the Riverdale musical episodes, but the whole Midge dieing thing.....

I only love the Riverdale version is because it sounds more pleasing to the ear with all of the music in the background. I know that a lot of it is auto tuned but still. The Seattle production sometimes sounded off

Sometimes I get frustrated because Riverdale did a production of Carrie and they didn't include The Destruction then I remember how dirty they did the other songs and I think "eh it's probably for the best."
