How Luis de La Fuente REVOLUTIONIZED Spain's Tiki-Taka to win EURO 2024

  • Watch Luis de La Fuente and his secret change that completely transformed the old, slow Tiki Taka philosophy of Spain with a more dynamic, modern infusion which eventually led to Spain’s EURO 2024 victory!
Since Spain’s Golden Generation swept the trinity of EURO 2008, FIFA World Cup 2010 and the EURO 2012, La Roja’s style of play had become stale and predictable leading to a 11-year drought.
In comes Luis de La Fuente, with no international experience other than being the coach of Spanish U-19 and U-21 teams. He brings a whole new dynamism to Spain’s Tiki Taka tactics and calls upon players like Mikel Merino, Unai Simon and Fabian Ruiz with whom he has worked for nearly 10 years since the Youth levels instead of relying on big names from Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Find out how Luis de La Fuente tactics modified the style of previous pioneers like Pep Guardiola and Luis Enrique, and broke the game with brand new rules for star players like Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams and more.
This is the story of the all-new sefutbol and it’s seleccionador nacional !

Credit to Luis de La Fuente for Spain's evolution...but also to Xavi that due to necessity and a great eye...gave opportunity to La Masia players. Luis Enrique also deserves credit. Do not forget that his Spain lacked quality players or they were too young (Gabi, Pedri, etc)...but in the end, I'm very happy for De La Fuente bravery. Good for him. I truly enjoyed watching Spain at the Euros.

De la Fuente has done an incredible work with Spain, but I think all this criticism that Luis Enrique is receiving is unfair. With him Spain reached the final of the Nations League, that won with De la Fuente, and the last Euro they reached the semifinal which they lose in the penalties agains the champions Italy, he made a lot of young promises to debute and built the basis of his actual success.

definitely, as many people have pointed out in the comments - Enrique laid the foundation with his ideas but wasn't able to capitalize on it due to his style + squad. De La Fuente took all that and added his own ideologies to the game, and went on to create a formidable team

I watched every single game of Spain in that Euro, and it was terribly boring, and the only match Spain could win before the extra time or the penalties was against Slovakia, two draws even at the group stage in a group with Poland, Sweeden and Slovakia. And, ironically, the best game they performed was the semifinal, which they lost. That style was neither entertaining nor efective, reaching the semifinal was just matter of luck, just like England reaching the final this year, but pretty undeserved, and the main responsible for such a poor play was Luis Enrique, because the players could perform a faster and more offensive football y they had been requested to do so, and that has been already proven.

It seems like you were trying to make sure you pronounce those C and Z sounds where the tonge is pressed against your teeth correctly, but in the end, you overcorrected and started applying this sound to some of the S sounds as well. The S never sounds like a C or Z, and interestingly, doing this is usually done by Latin American Spanish speakers who are trying to sound like they are from Spain. So it's a common mistake to make, haha

Spain used to use tiki taka under Del Bosque, Luis Aragones and Luis Enrique as a way of maintaining possesion, their belief was this was also the best way to defend by controlling the ball and deprive the other team of opportunities to possess the ball and attack.
The problem is it would open itself up to counterattacking football and unless creating chances the passing did not always break the lines as teams would defend in a low block and be very difficult to break down.
2014 World Cup an aging Fernando Torres and a 2018 WC slow Diego Costa did not provide the attacking threat needed. 2022 WC Spain again lacked the attacking threat with Asensio and Torres, Fati not making most of chances and falling to beat Morocco in Round of 16.
The difference in 2024 Euros is with Morata, Nico and Lamine the vertical attacking threat of the wingers is complemented with the link up play of Morata with 3rd man runs from Olmo and Ruiz. The overlapping and underlapping runs of Cucurella and Carvajal helped to create 1 v 1, 2 v 2 or 2 v 1 opportunities and helped the wingers to invert into the half space where they could create attacking threat and chance creation from the half spaces with crossing or line breaking through balls. The other key to 2024 spain is the ability to counter press high up the field, with Rodri, Ruiz, Olmo, Morata, Nico and Lamine working hard to recover the ball quickly and create transition opportunities to score when the defense is not set. Enhorabuena España, campeones del Europa!

What many people overlook is that change started with Luis Enrique and not Luis De la Fuente. In Euro 2020 Spain was already more vertical and dynamic. Enrique hoped to continue the same project in the World Cup 2022 thinking the same players would be more mature. Instead most of them were out of form and he failed. What De la Fuente has now, is not just one but two wingers at a very good form, something Enrique was not lucky to have. On the other side De la Fuente is utilizing counterattack much more than Enrique did or again maybe he has the players to do it this time. I think the current Spain is a project that started several years ago and De la Fuente has his important part in it, but he is not the only author.
P.S. And No, Spain has not always played Tiki Taka since 2008 as it is commonly believed. But let's consider it true for the sake of the argument.

THANK YOU!!! I BEEN saying this. Just like Rijkaard had the foundations for pep. People think this happens over night or sum. Mostly when it comes to the “tiki taka” ( such a lame way to name it and not at all what it’s really about) it takes time to develop and master. The hardest thing a coach can do is make the players believe. Luis Enrique made them trust him and the style. He took those Ls to the face to develop the team. Laporte was being called up even when he wasn’t playing and now we have solid CBs (Laporte included and highlighted) Carvajal has been the best he’s been in years. Now Spain has a threat for high pressure teams are it’s the danger of counters with SPEED which LE never had. Spain is so good based off the ground work from LE and the incredible mind of Luis De La Fuente took it to the next level. Just remember, it’s easier to make an already solid/ good team great than to start from the ground up.

@@spanishguy818 Also this team grew a lot during the tournament. If you watch Spain matches before the tournament, it was a team very much similar in style to that of Enrique's. Many people were sure that the team was not going anywhere. De la Fuente's merit was that he trusted the two young wingers and went with the flow. He was also quick to adapt as he seems to me as more tactically driven than Enrique. Or at least seems to me.

    • @piogithinji405
      @piogithinji405 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Enrique did a good job but crediting him for Spain being more vertical and direct is false IMO. With Luis Enrique , You could watch a Spain game and could see them have little to no: crosses or long balls. Even against teams that sit deep and defend (like Morocco in the World cup 2022) , Spain continued with tiki taka tactics even when they couldn't get through and never tried being direct or something different which was boring and infuriating to watch.
It was also evident in his team selection. Playing direct and vertical requires physical payers (tall, fast, strong, good ball winners etc.) like,: Ruiz, Rodri Williams and co. But Enrique always favored less physical players (Busquets, Pedi Gavi etc) hencehis bias towards Barca players because his main priority was possession obsessed football

    • @spanishguy818
      @spanishguy818 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

@@piogithinji405 no one is crediting him for that or anything but the simple fact that LE did more than people give him credit for. Those vertical passes don’t only come from physical players because maybe you’re too young but iniesta didn’t need to be physical to play that style. And yes it’s much much easier to attack the space and play vertical when you have players capable of such like Lamine and Nico, give me 2 players that Enrique looked past that were of the same caliber or style to play other players. No players that LE could have picked from is as good as those two at attacking the space, which btw if you play or even understand the sport you’d know that the receiver is the one that dominates where and what kind of pass to give. I can’t keep sending Ferran or olmo on the wing into space that is meant for someone like Nico and Yamal. Morocco in the World Cup had a good team what are you on about? It’s like discrediting Guardiola because Atlético beat them by parking the bus. When a team knows how to properly park the bus they also win, it’s anti football and anti audience but it works. Mourinho got 100 points by parking the bus with Real Madrid because they were organized.

You are missing some points about some of our last years' disappointments. Tiki-taka, when done with players that know how to do it properly, is far from boring. We failed to evolve when our opponents had studied us for almost a decade. Also, many mismanagements at RFEF level made the team lose a lot of momentum when we had very good players to at least go further in some of these WC/Euros. Few key points that I disagree with
    1) euros are played every 4 years
    2) when Spain has so many midfielders playing they were also great at dribbling like they were with passing so they were all playmakers and game changers
    3) Luis Enrique didn’t have a playmaker or game changer [pedri was younger , Nico Williams was younger, and Ansu was coming off an injury , also lamine yamal was way to young and nobody knew about him
    4) before luis enrique Spain did lose a bit of their identity and he had to set a solid foundation
    5) 2024 version of Spain played less tikitaka and more direct football and in some ways when you have wingers like that you can do damage but 2022 Spain was more dominant they just needed 1 player to be the difference maker
    Great video and using statistics

The truth is that the boring stuff in the 2022 WC was not tiki-taka or it was a perversion of tiki-taka. The golden generation (Xavi, Xabi, Iniesta, Casillas, et al) never overdid it; they were far more vertical than Luis Enrique's Spain. He might be a good manager, but for Spain, he was absolutely horrendous. I was happy that he left.

He was terrible with Spain … too emotional and tended to take people he liked and not the best.. also obsessed on being a Guardiola double…he also never read the games and made good changes… glad he is gone

They scored the winner against Germany without them...The are very important, but the key to the spain success is prioritizing the team vs the individual. It they were not there, there would be other players.

Yes you are right, most coaches give up possession football, except the English coach, Southgate, and the English players seem they are possessed in the pitch🤣🤣🤣🤣

The only weekness De lafunte needs to strengthen is his Aging defence.
If he introduce young talented defenders in his line up in upcoming games he will be unstoppable.

good point but I think the defenders that played in the EUROS, bar Nacho and Carvajal, have their positions locked in. Le Normand is 27 while Laporte is 30, Vivian is also 25. Since Luis de la Fuente has worked with youth teams from 2013 onwards, I'm sure if he sees a bright defender with a high potential he's going to give them their chance

Aging defense? Pau Cubarsi was gonna go but they took him to the Olympics. Hector fort, cucurella, Balde are all young players who can give you years to come

@@spanishguy818 blade 😂😂😂 overhyped barca players just like gavi. Because of biasness xavi couldn't help barca in champions league. Remove biasness and overhyped train, select deserving players then success will be more achievable. England doesn't perform Because of the same problem.

@@andistheinforitbutso7513 Dude, Balde is on of the best young LB prospect in the game and the only reason he didn't get game time is because he's been injured since October, he's one of the players to look out for under Hansi Flick. But yes i do agree with on on Gavi though, he's overrated in my opinion.

the basic assumption here is that Spain’s players in 2013-2022 were just as good as those in 2008-2012, it was just that the opposition figured tiki taka out. IMHO that’s kind of BS. Xavi Hernandez is probably one of the best midfielders in history. Iniesta, Xabi Alonso and David Silva are not too far behind. I cannot even remember any half decent Spanish midfielders, other than Busquets and an injury-prone Thiago Alcantara, in the years up to 2018 or so, Nolito and Iago Aspas were no David Villa either. And Eric Garcia was no Puyol. Spain simply did not have enough quality until a new generation began to emerge with Rodri, Fabian Ruiz, Pedri etc. And they have become really dangerous with Nico Williams and Yamal.

2008 - 2012 era Spain was not bored. Luis Enrique era was the problem. Bad evolution. De la Fuente did the right evolution recogerían original system and spirit of Luis Aragonés.

Luis Enrique was not the problem, The problem was the lack of dribblign wingers. Once De la Fuete found Nico and Lamine Spain can play as Luis Enrique desired, he had not those players in his time.

Credit to Luis Enrique. De la Fuente already had the job done. The key difference is the wingers. Having Yamal and Williams allowed Spain to play like Luis Enrique couldn't. If you take out Lamine and Nico you have the same problem that Luis Enrique had
