  • Gary Lineker is joined by Spanish football expert Sid Lowe to give us the inside track on players such as Dani Olmo, Nico Williams, Rodri and Lamine Yamal.
In particular, Sid tells us the extraordinary family story of Nico Williams, whose brother Iñaki plays for Ghana. Plus how has national coach Luis de la Fuente changed Spain from a team obsessed with possession to a team with flying wingers?

The Youth Development System in Spain is second to none, Spanish Coaches are tactical and in LaLiga teams are comfortable in possession, they pride in technical ability, and it is one of the leagues that still promote a lot of player expression. The scary thing about this Spanish Team is that I have no doubt between now and World Cup 2016 they'll find some new Spanish Talent. Their Youth System is unbelievable. I always say that a league plays a part in how the national team plays. You can literally dip your hand in every LaLiga Club and Find a proper midfielder. It is just their style, their way, it is how they do things. Great from Sid on Spain.

The first Spain game I watched all year was the win against Italy in the group stage. What I found most striking wasn't the quality with the ball (was never lost since the mid 2000s), and the newfound tactical variety that has proven so difficult to defend against
It was the attitude. Here there were, a team full of little known players, some really young as discussed, playing the finals of a major tournament, and they had *zero* respect to show for this Italy that were title defenders. That pattern would repeat itself in the other games, except perhaps that second half against Germany. That lack of self-awareness, and blatant disregard for the ghosts of the past, was what told me then that they well may make it big this time. I wasn't disappointed.

Sir Gary ... I watched you during your World Cup, and that was a England team I can get behind. Can't say that today. Totally unadventurous. Just because the EPL is undeniably high-caliber, that doesn't automatically translate into a truly formidable England. The EPL has tons of foreign players, might be one reason. I agree the immediate future belongs to the Spanish.

  • @jimbojimbo6873

Glad Seb mentioned the point ‘judging them by what they could be’ because I cannot think of a single player ever that met their expectations from 18 let alone 16.
They either under achieve or exceed, growth is never linear to age (arbitrary age that we came up with is not how biology works). Prime example was Pablo Aimer, at 18 he was better than Messi.

@@BMWDoctorSpain won 2 euros and a world cup consecutively which is not only a massive achievement for a team but also provides huge moments of joy for the fans of España. England has never won the euros and only has a growing distant memory of the 1966 world cup to look back on. We are a footballing nation and our country would be so emphatically happy to win this tournament especially after coming so close in the 2020/1 final. Spain of course has been the dominant team in this tournament and if they win they deserve it but from a fans perspective i hope it comes to England because Spain has already had more than it’s fair share to celebrate. The good thing is that as Spain has been so strong and is such favourites, if England somehow beat them then it cannot be denied that whoever wins this game deserves the trophy.

Finally football and strategics is played by the players so a team has to adapt the strategic to the players that you have on every moment... having posession worked for the 2008 generation because we had the best midfielders in the world (iniesta, xavi, silva, cesc, Busquet, Xabi Alonso, Cazorla...) but once they were gone it is impossible to intend playing in the same way, this is why HIerro and Luis Enrique failed as managers, they tried to play in the same way with not so talented players. For Spain possesion is important still but they have been able to adapt this philosophy to the most talented players in the country.
