    I have been around the Lister Peter factory when it was near Dursley - Gloucestershire and they had all their old engines on display. They went into administration in 2013 but are up and running again at Hardwicke Gloucestershire. The new engines still reflect the 'bomb proof' design of the old days. Maybe cheap imports almost killed them off but you can't find an engine with a longer life span than one of these.
    Great video, so nice to see an old lady like this saved. Everywhere the Brits (sorry I meant 'poms' ) went so did these. Best eco exhaust system invented, helps keep the flies away with no nasty chemicals.

    Thank you for bringing back lovely memories. I was a young 16 year old boy in 1958 an apprentice Electrical Engineer at G.E.C.Burma Ltd (They were Agents for Lister Diesel Engines in Burma) I was with a Fitter routinely servicing the Single Piston Lister Diesel Engine at Eastern Bunkerers in Kamaryut Rangoon. It was attached to a Artesian Bore Well that supplied Fresh Water for various Ocean Going Ships. We did the valves and serviced the Engine regularly. It brought back nice memories. Now I am Age 77 Retired Electrical Inspector. Thank you so much for uploading both TH-cams. What a reliable Engine - started up first time after you restored and serviced it - Champion!

    awesome work!! I love restoring old engines, I have got a few old lawnmower and small engines running that people thought would never run again. a few years ago I saved a Lister SR2 from going to scrap, here in Canada lister parts are little hard to find for some models so I had to straighten a bent pushrod, salvage the old gaskets, and clean the injectors and I got the old girl going perfectly.

      cooey84 Great work for saving that Lister, the older type engines are good for restoring as you can usually repair damaged parts and make up Gaskets etc. You might be able to source some parts online from the UK or even from India as they make their own copies of some Listers such as the CS models due to their reliability and simplicity in maintenance. Good luck in future restorations!

    Thats just brilliant! - There is definitely something therapeutic about tinkering with an old simple engine, thats donkeys years old, taking it apart, rebuilding it, and hearing her fire up and run.
    I love my modern gadgets, iPads, iPhones etc, but I also love stuff like this, its mechanical, simple engineering, that works! Years and years later, no matter what kind of abuse they've endured, they just carry on working. You can't knock that.
    Its around 5 deg C here, damn jealous..lol

      Hi Paul, thanks for your kind words. Pity you are not out this way, you would have been more than welcome to have helped put that old beast together and then watched it running and enjoyed a beer. Please send some of your rain and cold weather down here, getting a bit too warm and its not even summer yet! Love those old Listers, best of British engineering they are, certainly built to last with a bit of TLC. Wish you and your family a great Xmas and happy new year!

    It's hard to express the satisfaction and comfort I get from seeing someone restore these old engines. So much of this brilliant and bygone technology is being dumped and wasted and will never be seen again. None of todays engines will be around as long as this one till now or beyond. I laughed when you said it's getting a bit hot here and the temp was 49. The hottest day I have ever encontered was 48 and that was insanity. Then you topped it off with a 52. I didn't know humans could survive that! :0)
    I have one of these engines in an indian clone but it bounces around like a jackhammer on a pogo stick if it's not bolted down. I'll have to muck around and balance the thing. I really want a genuine lister but I couldn't find one so grabbed the roid while it was there and to satisfy my craving till a genuine CS comes along. :0)
    I loved the wooden frame you put yours on. My father is getting some trees cut down on his property and I'm going to talk to the people at the local mill to see how much they will charge to cut them 12" square for me to put my roid on. I love the look of the big timber but you can't get it any more.
    Thanks for your time and efforts in making these vids. You do an excellent job with them and they are great to watch being both educational and entertaining.
    I'm sure a lot of people will love them and appreciate you putting them up for us all to enjoy as I do.

      Thanks for your message, getting feedback like yours is encouragement to put together vids of my interests and I am glad you enjoy the engines. I have seen a few videos of the Listeroid engines and they seem to have a few issues like starting problems and vibration etc. I guess you cant beat the original British made engines. Wish you luck in finding a genuine Lister.
      I was lucky to have found the timber at the local dump shop, lots of good Australian Jarrah timber which is perfect to set the engine on. Good luck with your engine and timbers and have a great day! Thanks again for your kind words and hope you have a great day!

    Great video and great work restoring it. Was one of the best engines ever made and capable of running forever. I have a cs single and a cs twin that run on diesel fumes. Please post a video of the twin well done again.

    UK Lister Petter nearly went to the wall in 2014. It's been saved under a different name and moved from Dursley to Aston Down in Minchinhampton. The old diesels unfortunately are long gone. I went round the old Dursley factory some years ago and the foyer had the old engines but also the new stile. It's a shame the old ones have gone, they must have been one of the most bomb proof engines ever made. Maybe the emissions ? S*d the emissions. Nice job there mate, the old girl is top notch. Last longer than us two that's for sure. Regards.

    I really wish these were more common here in the US. Those that you can find are usually totally restored, and out of my price range. I would love to be able to buy one from India, but the environmental people have banned them from the country. Great job getting yours going.

      Thank you, pity its hard to get hold of those Listers, they give very long service life as they are slow running and have large bearings etc. The British made ones are very well made and I have heard that the Indian clones can suffer from manufacturing issues such as poor quality metals and sometimes the casting sand is left behind so its a good idea if you get one is to strip it apart and pressure clean everything in case sand is present. Sounds like the environment people have no idea of what a good engine really is!

    ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!! I watched all your clips on Finding and Recovering this old engine, right through to its first Start-up. When it turned over and farted, I gave out a good Whoo-hooo! and a good Clap of Approval. Very Well done! I am very pleased to see you breathed Life back into Old Lister. I wonder how many old Machines like this are abandoned in the Outback. It would be very exciting to go out there and recover them. I was just wondering about the Fly Wheels of those really MUNTED ones. The ones that were damaged beyond recovery. Couldn't those Fly Wheels be recovered as Spare Parts?     Lister recommend to use the factory fuel filter and steel fuel lines to prevent fires just an FYI

I saw the temperatures in your video- that is extremely hot in anybody's terms; I guess you probably got air con in the house, but cranking that engine over in 50 odd degrees deserves a medal! -and a nice cold beer afterwards! ;)

    I have this my grandfather buy this maybe 50 years ago for watering he is a landlord but now no need and I want to restore it but hare in Pakistan 🇵🇰 the part is not available and we send it to lathe machine to make it but it’s very hard.
    Now its not starting because of long time and sized. One day I will restore it. InshAllah

    Does anyone know of a well made Lister Indian copy? 10 hp single cylinder. There are so many different manufacturers of the Lister clone, but I wonder if any are very well made or not?

      Its true there are many lister clone from India.....but most of them not good as Lister.

    For those in the U.S. a temperature of 52.7C is 126.86 F. Yes, that is bloody hot if his thermometer is correct.

    Nice work! If you've got any plants that like iron-rich soil (or is all the soil over there iron-rich?) you could dump those chunks at the base of 'em!
    What are your plans for this engine? Oh, and what's that little V-twin behind the Lister?
    Fascinating how it cycles up-n-down in speed while idling!

      TheFurriestOne Indeed you are right, I could put the rust lumps around Citrus trees, they like iron. I have taken that engine to some local Heritage events plus some others, people like to see the old engines running. That V-twin is an Australian agricultural engine commonly used in Rotary hoes, that particular one was a World war 2 vintage generator unit.

    hi sir ,I wached again and again, I learning to many from you . I have 4 slavia , similar like your lister, I need help for to problems ,1- 8 hp slavia in combustion chamber there is crack , I cant see inside ,I losing compresion , how can solwe this problem?2- flywell center from gib key place broked , how can I repair ?thank you very much for help.

      Sorry for late reply, I am unsure if you would be able to repair cylinder easily however maybe you could resleeve the bore. The flywheel centre could be rewelded using suitable welding rods for cast iron and then remachine it, also you hopefully might be able to find a donor engine to harvest replacement parts from.       Yes, that would be an option. The water they used in that engine must have been pretty bad, full of minerals to cause so much damage.

    I'd use R11 to clean the thing if the paranoid environmentalists didn't outlaw it...it's a fantastic solvent.
    49 degrees? I'd be sweating like a cooked ham!

    Governor is stuck. Runs like a hit and miss engine which it shouldn't. Great job otherwise!

    Have just watched your videos about this engine, great to see it running after being recovered from the middle of nowhere. Myself and my mate went and got a Lister CS today from a farm in South West Scotland which has been lying outside for years but looks savable. I'm sure we'll have good fun re-building it and getting it running again.

      Good luck with your engine, I would love to visit Scotland one day, my Fathers family originally came from Ross shire and my mothers side was the Shetland Islands. Anyway I hope that engine will run again, they are nice engines, certainly my favorite type.

    Nice job rustymotor, haha, in Northern Vic, we'd have given up for the day when the temp reached about 35 deg C. 52 degrees C....good grief!! You may have mentioned it in one of the other vids, but was that engine a 3 1/2HP version ? Do you know any of its past history ?

    considering what you had to begin with i think you did a very good job......having successfully torn down the engine i think you could have gone a lot further with removing rust by soaking in evapo-rust and walnut blasting followed by some painting.....but you did a good job for a partial restoration....leaving that ruined cylinder lining was tough to watch but it would have cost money to have the old liner bored out......a total restoration was within reach but it takes money and some machine work.....replacement parts are available for valve trains and liners, etc

    Something about old engines, they can be mesmerising, I have a 1927 anderson and it has a character of its own! If I haven’t run it fir a week it will start right up but if it ran for an hour or two yesterday it sometimes needs some love to get it going! I still dont know what that love is, I just fiddle with this and that until it eventually fires up! Can drive me nuts at times but its just the old girl reminding me who is really in charge!

    It STILL IS full of scale and rust....1/2 a job done? Nothing a good soak in a caustic soda bath would not have taken care of.....

    I can not get my lister run, she was sleeping for 15 years, done a lot of work on it, head gasket, valve job, new injector, it give a hard time to run, it start 2 times and the shot down by her self

    yea. take that engine and put it in a bath of vinegar. then get a sacrificial cathode and a dc converter. this will remove all the rust very easy.

    You did a great job on this one. Looks like you have a few of them. I have a 1913 Lister N. Great running engines, but would I would prefer a Diesel. Greetings from Canada. Doug

      Hi Doug, greetings from central Australia! That Lister N would be a large unit? That engine in the background on my vid is an Australian copy of the Lister L type, fairly early model with the Bosch 22 flick maggy, runs very well too. Those old CS Listers are great engines, easy to start so long as the fuel system is in order, if the injector is not injecting properly ( poor spray pattern ) they are very difficult to start up.
