  • New toy from a barter deal. A 1969 Lister 6/1 with a God-awful homemade cooling system. Lets see if it will come back to life...

so quiet compared to modern stuff = ideal for a gen set with close by neighbours

Sell it to me. It would be an upgrade to my Harbor Freight contraption. If we get an ice age, I could run it on crude and make 24vdc 100amp power with my spare Cummins alternator. Life would be great. I have a 24vdc grid and 2 3500 watt inverters. I even replaced my water well pump with a 110vac one so I can go off grid. I do have a big natural gas engine. It's an Arrow C-46. I run it on propane. $20 every 4 hours. It's out of control.

My CS is from a 70s genset . The later ones had fixed compression so no windy in and outy thing 👍

I might be mistaken, but I do believe that a radiator cooling option was available with these engines, many, many moons ago. It wouldn't be the first radiator cooled CS I've seen. That also raises a question ❓ Where did this engine come from? I'm thinking that with that black and tarry gloop in the fuel filter bowl, could this engine have been used to drive an oil well pump? It wouldn't look out of place, powering a small Lufkin, somewhere in the backwoods. My thoughts being that the tarry stuff might have been residue from crude oil, from the well, being used to fuel the engine. Just a thought.
Oh, one other thing - I didn't see the compression valve that should be mounted on the cylinder head. It should be there to raise the compression for starting, and is screwed inward for that purpose, and screwed back out to reduce the compression once then engine is running.

They did have a radiator option but this one is definitely a homebrew job thrown together with whatever they had laying around, and what looks like the radiator from an old Ford Flathead. I was told this engine originally came from an Amish farm where it ran an air compressor, so who knows what kind of stuff they ran it on. You're right about the compression valve not being there. Some engines didn't have them, and came from the factory with a pipe plug in place of it. Definitely would've made starting it a little easier!

@@bigchevy80 I've seen Amish wood shops where all the machinery is run by either air or hydraulic. They can't be surrounded by electric wires.....the devil will get 'em. But cell phones.......no problem.

great "resurection" even if it doesn't run "quiet" yet. Some adjustments to do, I suppose.
    Segments could be gummed also.
That radiator, even if not original, would be a good solution to cool the engine. I'd rebuild that part, but in a better way.
    Thanks for sharing and uploading.
