    Once they start talking about ebay listings and not actual comps I walk away

    The thing is, the main ethos of the garage/yard/estate sale is you're asking strangers to pay YOU to get rid of stuff you're otherwise just trying to get rid of anyways! You want full value? Get yr ass on ebay/CL/FB market, etc! "Put in the work" as you so succinctly put it!

    I feel your pain with the garage sales. I've said for a number of years there are 2 rules for garage sales. 1) don't over price your stuff. garage sales are meant to clear out your junk from your house. if you are looking to make money, sell your stuff online. 2) don't let your kids price their own stuff i.e Toys. they don't understand how it works.

    My area is having a yard sale this Saturday. I have three shorts boxes $1.00 each. These books are looking for a new home.

    Dave I totally get it. Don’t find many comics at garage sales but when I do I get excited. A few years ago found a sale with a lot of comics. Nothing priced. I asked how much and he said I have to look up each comic on my laptop. One at a time. Groan. So I grabbed a tales to astonish. I think it was first giant man. And it had condition issues. He came back with a price of $300. My jaw dropped. I said well I was thinking $30. (This was before pandemic) Then he went off on me about how he is an eBay seller so he knows prices and he just wanted to do his local neighbors a favor by offering his books without shipping them. I said ok I’ll pass. So I looked around a little more and then left and I heard over my back a very insincere ‘Have a NICE Day’. Grrrrrr

    People that don't know about comics can be naive at times thinking that just because they have tons of old comics they immediately think they're valuable, I myself will not go over $5 dollars on any comic book, I do not buy CGC graded comics even if I need a certain comics for my collection there is always a chance I can find it in dollar bins.

  • @micahhenry
    @micahhenry 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Can you avoid the "counter-pricing" by asking what the comics are going for before you even start digging?

    It’s never wrong to speak your mind, as long as you do it in the way you did. Actually a valid argument to your point and one that all vendors in any collectibles market agree with. Preach the Garage sale gospel Brother Dave! 🙃🫠

      @WestCoastDAVEngers  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

  • @21Million

    I would have to hit 50 garage sales in Portland OR to find a box of comics like that. Consider yourself lucky. Comics are so rare to find in garage sales, that I wouldn't care if they charged convention prices. If they DID charge convention prices, it is more likely I would find what I want.

    • @WestCoastDAVEngers
      @WestCoastDAVEngers  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I disagree, I actually see more comics advertised at garage sales in PDX in a 10:1 ratio, granted I have no clue what's actually there ...keep searchin!

  • @ironknife1
    @ironknife1 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    Totally disagree. you’re mad that you didn’t get a $20 book for a dollar.
    People can charge whatever they want wherever they want, there’s nothing to get upset about or rant about.
    The only thing wrong is you’re mad that somebody doesn’t want to give away their collectibles for practically nothing. Who cares if it’s a garage sale, don’t go to them, go to your local LCS and pay retail then.
    Problem with the collecting community right now is they all think they should profit by 100%.
    Especially TH-camrs that are creating content.

    You know...i feel you obviously when i go to garage sales im always looking for a deal. Conversely, i sell books out of my garage on a weekly basis. Every sunday i open up and i have roughly 20 long boxes of dollar comics, and then a few short boxes of keys, and then i line my garage wall with keys and grails. I know what I bought them for, i know what i need to get. they're usually books that i got a condition upgrade for, or books i no longer have interest in collecting....I've never had anyone see my key boxes and be like, NAHHHH im good. but i took the time to price all my keys and they're at market prices but I always end up taking a percentage off if they ask. i do very well each and every sunday and have found it 100x's better than ebay.

    • @WestCoastDAVEngers
      @WestCoastDAVEngers  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      This is what I'm saying, you did the work, you price stuff appropriately, that will earn my respect and will most likely earn my dollars! As opposed to just making prices up on the spot making me wait around to eventually say no...
      Thanks for watching!
