As someone currently saving up for a (low grade) ASM #1, I think I can speak on this. It's as expensive as it is due to demand; there are a ton of people, myself included, whose primary goal in collecting is to complete ASM, and you can't do it without #1. Further driving up ASM #1 is that for most people, myself included, AF 15 is out of range. I can save 10K for a low grade ASM #1, but 50K for an AF15 is out of my league. ASM #1 has become a (very expensive) consolation book of sorts for Spidey fans. I'd also add that it's a very easy book to re-sell, if you ever want out of it.
With grading being so ridiculously popular. You're basically turning books into posters. McFarlane has some amazing covers which I feel is why the Batman and hulk have the values they do. It's also why he has so many other books doing Homage covers to his artwork. Great video.
The Night Nurse is what really blows me away. Did that 9.8 also come with your very own at home nurse?! That’s a real ridiculously high price and whomever owns that book must be a real huge fan of the character.
As primarily a Wolverine collector who has been on the hunt for that for years. I can agree with you on 2 things. You woke up choosing violence, and it is overpriced.
As someone who collects cartoon books, I do think it’s worth mentioning that the high prices for books like SpongeBob #1 are based on scarcity not only purely centered around high grade, but also just scarcity in general. Books like that often had/have print runs barely breaking even 4,000, and since they were made for kids, finding a high grade copy becomes nearly impossible. People sleep on cartoon books!
I agree with the unpopular opinion on that, Frank Miller Wolverine #1. I'll even go further and say I prefer the covers on the John Buscema run. Love those Captain Carrot figures
The print run on Wolverine #1 had to have been very high. We sold over 2,000 copies alone in my shop at time....kept re-ordering from Diamond and this was being sold in a comic shop in a small city (60,000 population)....priced way too high...
Great video! I too loved the splash screens of "Please don't hurt me"....(8x if I counted correctly). I must say it was a master class in walking the tightrope between your opinion vs what me be 'popular' opinion. My favorite line.."WOW...I woke up and chose violence today". Noicely done! My thought on prices is that during the Covid boom I think many people started to become more interested in comic collecting. They saw what collectables values might offer and started to become more interested in collecting for profit (and maybe just re-sparked their interest in the hobby from their childhood days). Have a great day!!
Ah, Batman #423. Years ago I had the money to either choose between that in a 9.8 or Venom #7 Variant of him holding the gauntlet. I chose the Venom issue since at the time it was a hot item. Not one of my best decisions. I had no idea that Batman issue would spike like that. Eventually I got mine but paid far more than the original offer (not 2k though). Personally that one is my favorite McFarlane Cover even though it was a rush job. Still a little grouchy I had the chance to get that at $575 but paid almost 3x as much.
Agreed with pretty much everything on this. Some I didn’t know about before but most are ones I have been thinking the same thing about for several years.
Really liked this video. Had some different opinions that I also share (love Wolverine #1 but I also don't think that cover is great). Enjoyed the variety of books on the list. Keep it up
I've read all four issues of Night Nurse in a compilation volume that Marvel put out in 2015; 1 to 3 were quite enjoyable hospital drama stories, 4 was a Gothic-style tale trying to cash in on the Dark Shadows-inspired trend of the early 70s. $30,000 for #1 in 9.8? I laughed a lot. As for newsstand vs. direct editions, I don't care - they're the same comic. The different bar codes make not a whit of difference to the stories and art. Nearly all these graded books are so far out of my price range that their price increases are merely an interesting side note to my reading and collecting.
I think some people during the covid boom thought, once again, they were "investing" to put their kids through college or whatever. So they paid what they shouldn't in a frenzy. The Wolverine #1 for example... it's not getting "more rare". More of this book are being graded daily. I have ungraded raws. Normally as a market gets flooded prices drop. But comics aren't doing that. It's now tough to see books that are out of my price range and not something I want to risk buying to see it drop back to sane prices.
I acquired ASM 1 in a 5.5 in 2015 for 9K, it went to 28K during the pandemic and seems to sit at around 20K now. Those COVID prices were crazy. There are some 5.5 I’ve seen lower than 20K because sellers are in need of money. I’d love an AF15 but can’t afford one. I’ve been collecting ASM for over 40 years.
Todd is king 🔥 I'm not surprised that these are worth what they're worth, they are part todd's life story, and as a fan of the artist, collecting his best and most important covers makes sense to me
When I started collecting comic books about three years ago, Wolverine was one of the few titles I was familiar with. So I wonder if it's people with deep pockets, the popularity of Hugh Jackman, and little knowledge of comic books that are keeping the value of the Frank Miller Wolverine #1 up so high. It's the same thing with Derek Jeter. I mentioned something on Geoff Wilson's TH-cam videos about Jeter's Topps rookie card being the only recognizable card I bought when I got back into cards about 10 years ago and on his next video, Mr. Wilson showed off 5 or 6 psa 10's!
Totally disagree. I bought my Wolverine #1 off the rack in 1982. It is his first solo title and an iconic cover. 1982 was 42 years ago and counting. 13k copies 9.4 or higher is not going higher by much more. Especially in newsstand. $1k is going to hold and the book at 9.8 with less than 4k copies is a tight market given there are hundreds of thousands of collectors who want it.
I agree with most of the books you have on this list. On the Batman 423 the one thing that you are missing is that there are only 283 blue labels and 92 sig series on the census, and there are definitely more than 283 people out there wanting a 9.8 a copy of this book out there. So this is strictly a supply and demand issue on the Batman 423 I do find it odd there are so few 9/8 in so many submissions and so many 9.6 and 9.4 on the census. When you look at all the other box in this area around this one, the percent of 9.8 to 9.6 is much higher than this book. I feel like for some reason CGC is intentionally keeping the population low on this book.
James we got to hurt you!! I have those Wolverine keys, the Todd Batman cover too...let them be overly priced. ....lol Actually I agree with Ironman #1 cause he had series with Namor and I think with Captain America first and they're more affordable
My man! I have felt the same way about Wolverine Limited Series about the cover, just not into it. The price is crazy and I am still waiting for it to go down.
I have the first Wolverine mini series (1982) raw, bagged and boarded. I bought them new in 1982. I'm nowhere near a professional comic grader, but I would say they are VF+. If I had to guess, I would say they might grade around an 8. Would it be worth my time and expense to have them graded by CGC? I don't need them for reading copies as I have the Wolverine Omnibus.
I think Marvel/SONY is laying low on Silk, maybe to let her shine in her own light. Obviously they could have introduced her during the spiderverse movie or the upcoming one. But it seems like they are keeping her separate. That tv series was announced a while back, but who knows if that's still happening. Hopefully SONY don't ruin her like morbius or venom ii. She seems under rated now, but i think she has a lot of potential.
I agree with most of these. I had a hulk 340 9.8 I had to sell in 2017 to help with putting together the down payment for my house. Guess I'm never getting it back again! Lol.
Iron Man 1 is ridiculously common. In the 1990s people were selling NM stacks of at shows for $40-50 a pop. There are people sitting on long boxes of mint copies.

Hulk 340 is one of the books I need to complete my Grey Hulk run and I’m constantly surprised by how a mid-grade raw copy will still routinely sell in the triple digits. Other than having a cover that every artist seems to want to pay homage to, it’s not even really that much of a key issue.
well i keep hearing the boom is over but it seems like the comics i am looking for haven’t got the message. it’s more like the boom has either plateau or has declined slightly as it gathers itself for the next increase
Wolverine 1 was the most spec'd on book around that era when it came out. First appearances were important for the biggest characters but #1s were bigger in general and the X-Men appearances in anything were key. My older brothers friend that collected reserved/bought 50 copies of it from our LCS. I hadn't talked with him in decades but did so recently/briefly and he said that a lot or most of them got water damaged at some point in time which I found strange as I would have thought they were all bagged/boarded.
I bought a Wolverine #1 on ebay for 20 bucks 15 years ago. I didnt grade it, but it looks very high grade. Since i bought it, the only TWO times i took it out of storage was to take it to a comic con in 2011 to meet Stan Lee and got it signed by him, and to take updated pictures on better camera because everything i collect i take pictures of so i dont have to take anything out of storage.
Interesting I have almost all these books in about a CGC .5 to CGC 7.0. I would love to have any of them above a nine, but as you point out, I just cannot afford them.
I think 9.8s are a waste theyre not any different than a 9.6 which are relatively affordable. Ive seen 9.6s look better than 9.8s. Too may variable when humans are involved. We need AI to grade stuff.
In 2019 I payed $500 for the 1-4 limited set #1-3, was 9.8 and #4 was 9.6 also got a 9.6 #10 in the deal. Cracked #4 clean and pressed it I got the 9.8. So about $550 in the 9.8 set with the bonus #10.
I got 2x Batman 423 1st prints back in 9.8 from the last McFarlane signing. Was into each for less than $300 including signature and grading. Sold one on eBay this year for $3750. Figured I didn’t really need two. I love that book tho.
I have two Batman #423's as well and I didn't have to sacrifice an arm and leg for them, one I got in a 3-pack bag and the other in the dollar bin both decent condition.
Hey another stellar show, that Todd Batman issue for over $2k is a little crazy, but its the Toddfather he doesn't do DC or Marvel anymore. Night Nurse is puzzling for such a high price and I can only think of why because one of thee coolest women in Hollywood played her in the Netflix series, but still Yea the BlackCat 1st appearance is a little too much for a Catwoman clone.
Hey I agree i have just bought some of these raw like Batman 423 and even then i believe I paid to much $145.00 but i finally own it and its part of my run I'm trying to complete #400 - #700
I keep thinking some month very soon, every new book from every major or minor publisher will be an homage to ASM 300! Prices? I will probably never fully understand them.
@@danpetitpas True. I should have typed it's a mystery why some books are popular and some aren't. I guess life would be dull if we all had identical taste.
Besides Golden, Silver and Bronze Age, what dictates an old comic? Comics from 1999 are now roughly 25yrs. Old. What is a normal print run? What is a standard of a low print runs? Low print runs should hike up prices but by how much? 5%,10% or 15%? How much should an authentic autograph raise a comic book? Again percentages 5%,10% or even 15%? It’s strange that comics have a grading standard but no standards on low print runs or autographs? Should artists/writers that have sadly passed autographs be in a higher standard? We love comics but grading them isn’t enough? Mark Jewelers? .30 and .35 cent variants how do we put prices on these? Controversial? Error Editions? Prices go up but by how much? Iconic Covers? Yikes! This needs to be addressed!! What do you think James? Comic Community?
I collected for about ten years years starting in 2001. (I was 49 and become interested in them after I bought some for a customer's son who was having problems in school. I thought comics might lead him to "real" books.) I was aware of expensive vintage books but never bought any. I started collecting again in April of 2023. The number of variants was a bit of a shock. And the prices for some of the modern variants seemed insane to me. $500 for a virgin variant when the same art with print on the cover was $5. What??? But if people can afford it, who am I to tell them how to spend their money? It's all a bit baffling.
The price of back issues all boils down to supply and demand: How many people are chasing which comics and what they're willing to pay for them. Age and print runs can explain some valuations, but walk into any comic book store and you can see plenty of 40-year old comics selling for a buck or less. The newest twist, and what you're probably reacting to, is that some fans have worked their way into very good paying jobs and they have a lot of money to pay for the most desirous issues. This has raised prices on many runs beyond what the average person can afford. But the market sets the prices, and if a dealer overprices something, he's not going to be able to sell it until the price comes down. And we've seen that fair-weather comics fans with lots of money came into the market during COVID, drove prices higher, and now prices have fallen back to pre-COVID levels for a lot of books. So don't think in terms of age, print runs, autographs and so on. Think about a book in terms of how much are you willing to pay for a book.
Corection "the era of the direct edition ", during that time 1979, the newstand was way more availible than the Direct. those comics with the line drawn through the upc are more rare by a long shot. gotta disagree with you on that one.
Correction to your correction! hahaha - Sure newsstands were still more prevalent up until 1984 until directs took over, but the 1979 direct editions and comics shops started the craze of keeping books pristine. Perfect example, in 1979 there's way more newsstands on 194, but yet there's WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY more 9.8s that belong to the direct editions! goes to show you the new way of thinking!
I'm relieved that I'm not the only one who doesn't really care for that limited series Miller Wolverine #1. I've never understood the hype around that book.
The price of Batman 423 is high, but that price has been set by the high demand for it. It's an early McFarlane cover that has been used as an homage cover many times over. It is, however, a bit of a shame that dollar for dollar this book has a higher value than say Detective Comics 359. But it seems for now people want Batman 423 more than they want Detective 359.
Nope. im not spending the grading nonsense money but ive got 3500 comics from '72-'80 which nobody is making anymore. I estimate mid grade level but I have them all. Deadpool? Hulk Wolverine? Obviously I can only sell locally or to Saudi princes.
I Have That WOLVERINE 1 From 1982 Newsstand Too 😊Love The Cover But It Is Overpriced 😱 I Bought Mine Years Ago For $100 Now I Can't Believe It's $1200 Or More 😅
I have two copies of Batman #423 and got 'em cheap years ago I just simply have them bagged and boarded I don't care to slab them, I buy comics as collectibles and not for investment with everything so damn high right now there are things more essential like food and paying bills nobody is paying hundreds on comics.
Is it me or are comics really cheap? I collected and dealt comics and cards, collected since the early 80s, dealt since the early 90s, stopped both in the 2010s. Cards from just the 90s alone are worth way more than key comics from 80s, 90s, etc. I guess with all of the slabbing of comics, all they are now is giant trading cards of an inconvenient size for a man/comic cave. Also, my one word rebuttal to this entire video: Demand.
EDIT: From @3:03 to @3:52 it should have read $30k for Night Nurse - (sometimes Final cut pro loses text when exporting)

Hulk 340 is one of the books I need to complete my Grey Hulk run and I’m constantly surprised by how a mid-grade raw copy will still routinely sell in the triple digits. Other than having a cover that every artist seems to want to pay homage to, it’s not even really that much of a key issue.
you can get it pretty cheap these days.
@@comicbooknarcissist I haven’t had much luck recently, but I’ll keep trying.
well i keep hearing the boom is over but it seems like the comics i am looking for haven’t got the message. it’s
more like the boom has either plateau or has declined slightly as it gathers itself for the next increase
Is there a list of comparable DC books?
Very well thought out list; enjoyed the video and opinion. Slightly disagree on Night Nurse but hear you! Thanks again.
Silk is coming to next Spider-Man game. She was introduced in post-game scene
Sick!
Great video and great topic. I agree that these comics and a lot of others are way too much. 😎
Batman 423 is the 1st comic i found in the wild! It was the 1st comic i ever sent to get graded and is the reason i started collecting comics!
Interesting I have almost all these books in about a CGC .5 to CGC 7.0. I would love to have any of them above a nine, but as you point out, I just cannot afford them.
I hear you!
I think 9.8s are a waste theyre not any different than a 9.6 which are relatively affordable. Ive seen 9.6s look better than 9.8s. Too may variable when humans are involved. We need AI to grade stuff.
I only have a couple of these. Theres a couple I would like to have. I agree that these prices are too inflated in the short amount of time its been.
Wow! I purchased a Spidey 1 in 1979 and 194 when it came out, and I still own it. Regardless of what you think of the prices. Buy low sell high Babak!
I've also never thought asm 1 was a good cover ? With Spidey and the FF it could have been epic but instead is dull and badly arranged ?
I got 2x Batman 423 1st prints back in 9.8 from the last McFarlane signing. Was into each for less than $300 including signature and grading. Sold one on eBay this year for $3750. Figured I didn’t really need two. I love that book tho.
Wow, that's a huge flip!
Night Nurse is puzzling for such a high price and I can only think of why because one of thee coolest women in Hollywood played her in the Netflix series, but still
Yea the BlackCat 1st appearance is a little too much for a Catwoman clone.
I'm with you on the Wolverine cover.
But thanks for an interesting video.
It's all supply and demand.
@@danpetitpas True. I should have typed it's a mystery why some books are popular and some aren't. I guess life would be dull if we all had identical taste.
Bro is attempting to Leroy Jenkins the entire dungeon and get ALL of the aggro.
What's the point of buying a comic if you can't read it?
SpongeBob comics was actually how I got into comics and I’m trying to collect a complete run. They’re actually super low prints so they’re hella rare
I agree with most of those. I would put my money on AF 15 instead of ASM 1.
so would literally everyone
Love the Wolverine cover and the hulk 340
Nice snowey video, also yes 250k I'd buy a house lol
Love the list. Hitting the nail on the head! Just why?!
I wholeheartedly agree about ASM 194. The prices don't make sense.
i dont understand she-hulk 40 myself
Night nutse...never understood the draw
Great video keep it up!
It’s a cool image but If Batman’s cape was as it is in 423, he would be tangled up and tripping over it whenever he tried to fight!
I couldn’t agree with you more about the Wolverine #1, the Iron Man #1, and the Hulk #340. They’re okay but not really wowing me in any way.
Nope. im not spending the grading nonsense money but ive got 3500 comics from '72-'80 which nobody is making anymore. I estimate mid grade level but I have them all. Deadpool? Hulk Wolverine? Obviously I can only sell locally or to Saudi princes.
I Have That WOLVERINE 1 From 1982 Newsstand Too 😊Love The Cover But It Is Overpriced 😱 I Bought Mine Years Ago For $100 Now I Can't Believe It's $1200 Or More 😅
I agree about ASM #1! Just an overall not-super-awesome key.
They are doing spider man spin off tv show silk on Amazon tv
Thank god captain carrot didn’t find his way to this list
High prices, but it's the price if you want the book at this moment in time. I like Spongebob!
I have two copies of Batman #423 and got 'em cheap years ago I just simply have them bagged and boarded I don't care to slab them, I buy comics as collectibles and not for investment with everything so damn high right now there are things more essential like food and paying bills nobody is paying hundreds on comics.
I tend to agree with this top 10 wholeheartedly.
423 is a nice cover but I don’t really see all the hype behind it tbh
Amazing 1 on this list? Are you kidding??????? Absolutely deserving.
Totally agree with you on them over priced over printed books
Right? It's like they're trying to sell hype instead of value!
I can't agree more on the Wolverine 1.
Also, my one word rebuttal to this entire video: Demand.
i love black cati have9.4 its a spec book
Batman 423: 110% agree. Also Tec 880: honestly, never saw the appeal.
Todd fans are just different. The big keys all go for some wild money in 9.8, especially if they're signed.
