- Ruby throated hummingbirds nest from Nova Scotia to the Gulf Coast and south Florida, west to Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. It winters primarily from south Texas and northeast Mexico south to Costa Rica, Cuba, and Bermuda. It is the most common hummingbird that breeds in the eastern half of North America.
In this video, Outdoor Alabama video producer Ron Jolly demonstrates how to attract hummingbirds to your yard.

Their ruby throats & iridescent blue green backs are an exquisite vision.
Great video!! Very informative. We just put out our first feeder and a hummer came by that very same day. It was a beautiful thing to see.
3:10 How to attract hummingbirds. The previous is interesting discussion on the the bird itself. Thanks for posting.
Thanks

Best vid on Hummers yet. These little troopers are so amazing. Thanks, C.B.C.
I never had any type of bird feeder in the yard. I heard that hummers can remember 300 different feeding locations. An interesting observation I had was that the morning after I put a hummingbird feeder up, there was a cardinal AND a blue jay sitting in the same small tree as the hummingbird feeder. I am convinced that these other birds saw the feeder, and figured they would look to see if there was anything around for them. Birds are smart.
I live in Washington. Just before spring I had a hummingbird chirping at me a few days in a row. I got a feeder. I clean and fill the feeder once a week. I make my own. The bird now lets me know when its close to empty by hovering and staring in the kitchen window. As I speak the feeder is in the dishwasher. I am going to get another feeder since there has become a battle over the feeder with other hummingbirds. I rent an apartment from a hay farmer. Not a single flower to be seen for acres. Still not sure why they are here but they are entertaining.
Hello from the west coast of Canada, British Columbia. I have ONE little Hummingbird that visits 2 yrs. now cuz i have flowers on my balcony. I want to know if it is a male or female & your vid. helps me find out. He/she likes the Nasturtiums best. I have Snapdragons & a Mandeville plant as well as Geraniums but the Nasturtiums r his/her favourite. I have made a Hummingbird feeder with instructions on it being safe for the Hummingbird. I enjoy knowing all i can about these incredible little creatures that have beautiful iridescent feathers. Thank you very much, i have enjoyed listening and watching your vid. Have a pleasant week!
Thank you so very much for making and sharing this video. ☺ I love nature and these little guys amaze me. I am currently trying to attract more to my yard.
I live in Indiana. Hummingbirds like butterfly bushes, zinnias, bee balm (monarda), and other flowers. Great video.

I heard bleach and soap residue is dangerous for them... I just scrub with white vinegar once a week and clean the feeder out about twice a week. Is that good enough?
Gena, check out Hummingbird Spot's video on cleaning feeders. She has a great tip about using Vit. C tablet to neutralize the bleach after your soaking. Vinegar is another option - give that a search! We use her methods
Yes. Use white vinegar and be sure to rinse well.
Loved the facts about these little birds. Great video, thank you.
Excellent presenter and well done production

This is the best Hummingbird video I’ve seen, well done!. Thank you 😊
Thank you for additional info about vegetable oil on the the hanging wire for ants, a great trip that I will try, nice video
A moat works better.
Vaseline as well, dab some on bottom and top of stand and on top of feeder.
@@ghz24 much better choice as there is no risk to them getting the oil on their feathers.
Ant moat works best! They're super cheap off amazon, and you can even get feeders with built in ant moat, or diy some yourself. It's just a little water barrier that they can't cross to reach the feeder. I have one on each of my feeders and have zero ants. I used to have to clean off these huge red ants every couple hours, haven't had a single ant since.
Thank you I love birds I want to post pictures of hummingbirds and I need to attract hummingbirds thank you for making this video!

That was very educational. I’ve wanted to start my hummingbird feeders for awhile now. I think I’m more confident with what I’ve learned here. Thank you for the information. 🙏
Thank you so much..hope I can have some in my yard. That was great and I love your voice.
hi sir..thank u for ur great idea..in my patio i am just getting only one hummer how should i increase the no of humming birds..plz help me
Having blooming flowers in your yard may help attract them more, but there's not much more you can do. Enjoy the one, and you may have more visitors as time goes on!
thank u sir
last year had lots of humming birds. I didnt do any thing different this year and they was here this time last year. What do i do to get them back again
Just keep your feeder out and make sure the nectar is fresh. Sometimes they are on a different schedule, but they usually come back eventually.
Thank You
Awesome sharing here ! Lovely Filming too ! 5 thumbs up Video !
This is very informative! Just ordered my humming bird feeder so I can capture them with my slowmo camera. Thanks again for sharing.
One day I heard some squeaking outside my window. Looking out I saw 2 males locked face to face near the feeder. I went outside and found them laying in the grass, still locked together. I gently picked them up and one flew away. The other was exhausted so I set him on the feeder. After a few minutes of sipping the sugar water he flew away. They are like little rockets, zooming all over the yard.
I live in northern California and it gets hot in summer. What is the reason you have to change the nectar every 3-4 days if it's hot? Does the heat degrade the nectar (sugar water?). What is the temperature that you consider hot? 80, 90, 100 degrees? Thanks so much for this very good video.
Changing nectar frequently prevents spoiling - you don't want mold and bacteria growing in the feeders.
doubt if we would be able to attract them to England... lol
seriously you are lucky to have these delightful birds
Hummingbirds are unique to the Americas, sadly for our friends in other countries
I had a wonderful showing of hummingbirds last year. ONE showed up this year but didnt stay
I'm in No Va. Put the feeders out in March. The one showed up in April, but left. Same clean feeders.
Same homemade sugar syrup.
Same location. It's now 6/3/2020
What happened? Is it too late to draw hummers? What about next year? What can I do differently to draw hummers next year?
nice tip on cleaning the feeders.. I wouldn't have even thought to do that
But why
Your video is brilliant. How can I find out if there are hummingbird in my city? I've sparrow feeders and loads of come for feed. I'd do everything possible to attract other birds. Please let me know.
Thanks again for your video.
Are you in the United States? Which city?
Great Video-- love the Indian flute Music in the background-- you did a professional, very excellent Job!! Thank you for Posting!! :)
Does the hummingbird like Asiatic lily also coneflower ?
Great info. Thanks for your obvious knowledge on these little treasures....
Excellent video! Best wishes from Montreal, Canada!
I would like to know how you keep the squirrels off of the feeders?
What are the seasonal months for hummingbirds?
I’ve set up 8 humming bird feeders all around the house and they still fight. 🤣
what an enjoyable video thank you.
"The aerial combat that follows, is fun to watch"
excellent info. and video - thank you !
As info too, never used distilled water as it lacks all the trace minerals they need. Also boiling removes impurities from the sugar also so you must boil it combined as show here.
Thank you! Great video!
I LOVE WATCHING HUMMINGBIRDS
What a great way to keep a space to attract these birds.
Very informative and your video shots are awesome!
Fantastic information. We get them every summer here in Rhode Island and I’m going to be using as many of these plants as the soil will support. Thank you for the video.
Super informative. Thanks for all the tips and suggestions. Hope to attract more hummingbirds this spring with a few more feeder as last year was my first attempt.
Beautifully informative video!
Thank you. God bless you 😊
Just what I needed! Thanks! I can't wait to get started and set up some super high speed cameras.
Love our beautiful Ruby-throated Hummingbirds!
Very enjoyable video but boiling water does not remove impurities unless you’re capturing the steam and condensing that back into water
I want to buy feeder
Okay...i don't have that
Can i feed them my cousins?
Where to buy this gadget please..thanks
Thanks for such a fascinating video! I do have to say, though, that I know of at least one other bird that can hover and that is the white-tailed kite and some other birds of prey.
They don't truely hover they soar into a headwind.
Are those feeders not often invaded by bees?
The bees dont drink too much, especially compared to the flying piglets that seems to eat a gallon a day. If it becomes too much of an issue and your hummers cant get a drink, put up another feeder or 10
@DebbyAbqNM hahaha
Beautiful informative.
Bless you
I live in Minnesota and I've never seen hummingbirds in my life. Do they live in my state?
Yes, there will be hummingbirds in Minnesota during the summer months. The best way to see and observe them is to put out feeders for them. Plus the sugar water gives them the energy they need to find and catch small insects which is also part of their diet.
Hummingbirds are in the Americas, but usually northern states will see migrating hummers later in May
Thank you for the details very helpful in Near the East Coast of NC!!
Many folks look at our western Broad-Tailed Hummingbird and assume it's a ruby-throated. I believe the ruby-throated is slightly larger than our Broad-Tailed.
The hummers fight over the feeder..does that mean I need a few more?
It is natural for them to "fight" over a feeder, but you might attract even more if you put up another feeder.
@@OutdoorAlabama great, will do. But yeah, I watched two hummers have ww2 style dogfights over the feeder last summer haha
@@DRC-of2ci To attract more put the feeders out of sight of each other.
what a nice video I can see I am not the only person, From the great plage of 2020
Thank you. Very good video on such an amazing creature!

thank you.
great video
Excellent video and information. Thanks
How do I know if my city has any
What city?
Do you live in the Americas? (Except in Greenland)
Hummer can be found as far north as the near arctic circle of Alaska and Canada and as far south as Patagonia (southern Argentina). Are are so many different species, coming in all different shapes, sizes, and colors.
****You will *not* find any humming birds in the Old World nor any Pacific Islands.
Thanks for the video, very informative :) :)
Thanks for the information! Very helpfully 🙏

The Ones I have Seen At My Feeder Is The One That Is All Green And The Chest Is All White. You Did Say The Male Has The Ruby Throat ?
Lauren, depending on your area, there are quite a few varieties of hummingbird in North America
Thank you for your informative and thoughtful video! I have a lot of birds this season so far and found the part about their territorial nature quite interesting.
With love from Roy, Utah 😊😉😮🙂💙
I have so many humming bird hawk moths but not humming birds (Ontario)
I loved your video...FYI, the Harrier Hawk can also hover🙏🏼

Thank You for all your tips, info. I learned quite a bit. Thanks.
How many .oz is considered as "one part"?
One part can be half cup sugar to 2 cups water. Or one cup sugar to 4 cups water. Depends how much you want to make.
Thank you for your educational video. I learned a lot.
This is the third video I've watched and it's also the third water to sugar ratio I've been given. What's up with that? The first one gave one at 2:1, the second was 3:1 and now yours at 4:1. This has me very confused.
ADCNR uses the same ratio recommended by Audubon and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, 1/4 cup of sugar to 1 cup of water.
OutdoorAlabama Thank you!
what about calcium for the eggs
Hummingbird feeders provide supplemental food. The birds also eat insects to provide them with other components of their diet.
Yes! Ty!
I loved it so much that is amazing
Awesome! Thank you!
Excellent, excellent video!!!
Kasia...why do you say that sugar is horrible and will kill hummers?
thank you
Thank you for sharing. 🙋🏻♀️
I used to put 4:1 ratio.. now I mix 4:2 and wow..we suddenly have 15 feeding.. happy
You can adjust your mixes from normal 4:1 to 5:1 or 3:1 depending on weather usually :)
they like black eye susans? I never see them touch ours.
vistaprime they probably go to them as a last resort. 😂👍
Good video

It isn’t easy to attract hummingbirds these days. They’re so cute.
Good info. Thanks!
Clean feeders with hot water and scrub every surface with a bottle brush and small brushes for the port holes. White vinegar can also be used to clean and always rinse well. Clean and change every 1-3 days and never going past the 3rd day. If it's hot outside or a feeder is in the sun, it should be scrubbed clean with hot water and or vinegar every day....... Do NOT use oils or sprays of any kind like he said, if you have ants an ant moat filled with water will work keeping ants away 100%.
Great tips
Thank you!!
whats wrong with honey in the water
Honey can cause a disease.
INFOCOOL what disease
Of the top of my head I think its fungal, but a quick google search will tell you exactly the disease.
When honey is diluted with water, bacteria and fungus thrive in it. Not good for birds.
onlythewise1 Sounds interesting. What kind of honey do you recommend and in what proportion to water is used? How long can one leave outside before it needs to be rotated? Thanks.
No Ruby Throated here. Anna's stay year round, Rufus migrate here for the summers.
Thank you sooo much!!!
My sister had a stroke,my sister bought humming bird feeders that stick to her bedroom window. She can watch the humming birds from inside her bedroom.

I have problems with bees, they take over my hummingbird feeders, how can I solve this?
Since I wrote this I found that if you ad a small dish with stones and water, bees will drink the water and leave the hummingbird feeder alone.
I had the same problem. Once bees find the feeder they release pheromones. They will, bee line back to it. I found relocating and wiping with alcohol works. I also use an ant mote to keep ants and earwigs off.
You might try a different kid of feeder. Sometimes smaller holes make it harder for the bees. Some people recommend taking the feeder down in the heat of the day and putting back up near dusk.
Bees - change to Hummzinger feeders and you can also add little insect guards. The wasp and bees cannot get into these feeders plus they are very Easy to scrub clean with a toothbrush and the brush will also fit into the port holes...... yellow color attracks bees so don't use that and also you can provide a shallow pan with water in it and marbles or rocks, placed far away from the feeders, the bees want to drink water and it will pull them away from the feeders. You must have feeders that bees just cannot get into and hummziners can work, the port holes are far above the sugar water.
I never use bleach or soap to clean feeders.
Wonderful "Charm"....
