  • Guess what? I chose a Ronnie James Dio song for a "My Choice" day. That's right. I freaking LOVE DIO!!! He is now an obsession, and I want to hear so much more of his voice. You all voted on the poll for "Holy Diver", but commented that "Gates of Babylon" was much more rewarding vocally. So I recorded both. Let's hear some Rainbow!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Rainbow performing "Gates of Babylon” live.

I actually had a fairly pleasant encounter with Ritchie a few months before he split from Deep Purple the 1st time and formed Rainbow. We had a few minutes of conversation about his interest in classical guitar.
What I've picked up over the decades, while he is a superb guitarist, he is a perfectionist and has never thought he was good enough. I also think his attitude toward others has been a cover for his own insecurities.

When you said, "ah, Dio" and put your hand over your chest, I felt tears. As a metal fan, most of my life has been dominated by my fellow musicians looking down on metal, or at least considering metal musicians as somehow lesser than "real" musicians. Seeing an opera singer of repute and talent swoon over Dio is meaningful and touching. Thank you for these videos and analysis.

It is more like bringing the diehards back to Earth. There are few groups of music enthusiasts that are as opinionated and secure in those opinions as metal fans. So much so that they eat their own and get into almost violent sub-genre civil wars. Technical virtuosity is not everything.

You are all correct. It is awesome to see someone as formally educated musically as Elizabeth embrace metal as she has. Metal fandom is VERY tribal and there is a lot of unnecessary infighting, but one must remember that not only has musical academia looked down it's nose at metal for decades, but in the 80's and 90's metal fans were straight up vilified. Like, if you listened to metal you were a satanist or a serial killer in training, so you can see how these people could become a bit prickly. Also great to see so many metal fans legitimately appreciating Elizabeth for her open mindedness.

Richie Blackmore loves odd time signatures and Medieval time signatures. His use of them in his music is the magic that he adds to any band he has ever been in. Dio much like Richie has a REAL and magical control over his voice. There is no need for any sterile digital interference here, it's all pure talent! Your comment about "paste & copy" is one of reasons why much of the music today is missing magic that music should have. It's one of the many sterile features of digital music.

Fair point. The music still resonates and rocks out, all these years later. Early Rainbow (with Dio) is still relevant within the realm of hard rock/metal today. I do think that as Ritchie moved through other singers with Rainbow (R. Romero, Graham Bonnet, Joe Lynn Turner) the band became more emblematic of the times which makes it sound a bit more dated. For instance, you can tell Death Alley Driver was recorded in the ‘80s. I still love it, but it’s not as timeless as the Dio era Rainbow.

I saw them in concert once. Richie Blackmore was awesome. Going back and finding out that the current Black Sabbath’s singer was in the band in the 70s surprised me. This video is awesome. These are live Dio vocals, backed by the studio recording background. Sometimes, some bands or performers hate “pretend performing” or lip-syncing for videos, and Dio & Blackmore were among them.
This is such a great companion piece to Stargazer, while not being the follow-up to that story (that would be “Light in the Black,” that’s more instrument-based), and being on a different album (“Long Live Rock and Roll” in ‘78 - their last w/ Dio).
I will ALWAYS be vehemently FOR watching RJD LIVE whenever possible, because there’s a ton more to react to. Breathing technique within phrasing, real-time embouchure-work, stage presence, a real sense of POWER from the vocal while not getting extra help with mixing in the studio. Also, Dio’s improvisational work that makes live performances special for each individual audience at each show, should be seen and believed. He never needed a teleprompter - he’d just improv to cover if he “screwed up.” He’s the freakin’ best!

DIO's autobiography was just released. He started to write his memoirs but due to his illness he wasn't able to finish them so another writer was needed to finish the texts. Warmly recommend this book which shines light to his early career, his strong vision for making his kind of music. It also underlines how much his fans meant to him.
As my recommendation for you as the next song: "The temple of the king" from the first Rainbow album.

    Big Scott from Dio again,
Elizabeth the joy you cannot hide when you hear Ron brings me so much joy, and to all the fans I truly miss seeing all of you year after year.Elizabeth , not for a reaction video, but I think you’ll enjoy the album Magica. If you look us the deluxe edition of the album the last track is Ron narrating the story of magica then go back and listen to the album. As an opera singer I think you’ll enjoy how the story is told through the songs .Ron’s birthday is coming up July 10th it would be very cool to do an extended reaction on that day going through the decades
1961 an angel is missing /Ronnie Dio and the prophets
    1972 Hoochie Koochie Lady/ Elf
    Rainbow you have done
1981 falling off the edge of the world /Black Sabbath
    1984 Egypt. /Dio
    1992. I. /Black Sabbath
1994. Give her the gun ( about child abuse) Dio
    2002. Throw away children. /Dio
2009 follow the tears / Heaven and Hell(3rd time with Sabbath members)
Just an idea. As soon as I started to pick out song’s I realized it would take you months to span his career.
The last live record was Neon Knights 30 years of Heaven and Hell and though we didn’t know at the time Ron was already stage 4 stomach cancer and would be gone less than a year later. You could react to Heaven and Hell again 30 years later and see he was stronger than ever
Again thank you all for never forgetting our Friend Ron and that fact that he always made each one of us feel special and worth it in every way
    Big Scott

One of the great ways to experience wonderful rock singers is to listen to their performances of songs as isolated vocal tracks. I've listened to Ronnie Dio this way and continue to be amazed at his vocal ability and depth. Ronnie possessed that magic quality of truth and credibility in his voice, where the words that he sang and his emotions expressed felt real and authentic. Many don't know this, but growing up, Ronnie's musical idol was opera singer Mario Lanza. No doubt, his exposure to--and love of--the classical music repertoire added to his artistic development.

But I've read a lot of stories about Blackmore back in the 70s and 80s, he was not only angry and intolerant, but also mean-spirited. As legendary as his skills are, it puts me off him a bit. Dio I found MUCH more endearing, kind and considerate, which added to my overall opinion of him as a metal god.
