  • The first all-new car of 2019 is here on TestDrive! We're taking a look at the redesigned MkVII 2019 Volkswagen Jetta Execline, or SEL Premium for those down in the USA.
    The compact sedan market is still a highly competitive segment for most of the automotive world, especially for Volkswagen, where they've built their business off of the small family car since their creation. The 2019 Mark VII Jetta has some new features, as well as some changes over previous generations, so we're going full in depth with this episode of TestDrive Spotlight.
    Our full tour and review of the 2019 VW Jetta Execline goes over the exterior features like the LED headlights and high beams, halogen fog lamps, KESSY keyless entry, and LED tail lights. We also talk about the way Volkswagen Canada is promoting this car online when it comes to the borderline misleading colour hue of the fog lights, something we take issue with and explain our reasoning during the episode.
    We also talk about some of the cost cutting measures Volkswagen has taken compared with the Mark V Jetta, the vehicle surrounding the TDI diesel emissions cheating scandal. Despite the engine related controversy, we feel the Mark V Jetta was the pinnacle of VW engineering and build quality, and use it as a benchmark when testing this new vehicle, such as the switch from a multi-link independent rear suspension to a torsion beam. We also go over some of the cost-cutting taking place in the trunk, with the way the trunk mechanism works, as well as the materials chosen for the inside of it.
    We hop inside the newly re-designed Jetta to talk about the fully loaded setup on this model, including Volkswagen's Digital Cockpit, infotainment system, dual zone automatic climate control, excellent 10-colour ambient lighting, front heated and ventilated seats, rail to rail sunroof, two USB outlets, and leather seating. We go over the navigation software and how it works with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
    Finally we take the 2019 Jetta on a road test to talk about how the car performs in the real world in terms of fuel economy, as well as on our test loop. The Jetta recorded 5.5L/100km on our test loop, and 6.6L/100km overall during our week.

    I leased an "R" trim, manual transmission, as a commuter. So far I'm very happy with it. It gets good millage and is fun to drive around town. It has very good breaks and the drive-line traction control which has been notable in the slippery sub-zero conditions in Toronto...

    Thanks for the excellent review. Having just driven the 2019 Execline, I would say your review was spot on. All things considered, I think the car is the best value for money of any in its class that I have driven. In fact, I am so enamored with this car that I bought one. I also have two 2016 Tredndline + Jettas and I absolutely love them, nice to drive, good on gas and extremely reliable. All that remains to be seen is how the 2019 holds up over time.

    Yes! I was waiting for a review from you of the jetta. While your complaint about the infotainment graphics and display is valid, consider the fact that it's still better than that of other competitors in this class. That torsion beam handles suprisingly well than most cars with independent rear suspension in this segment. Over all not bad for what it's for and the price point.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's certainly true, we did mention that it isn't necessarily a bad screen compared to other cars in the market, but we did prefer the setup with the Golf. Like any car in the compact segment, it has some strong features that make it stand out, but also some flaws. No car is perfect.

      I agree with the point about the infotainment, obviously BMW is better for 2x the price, but VW, Skoda (in Europe) compares much better in infotainment matters and usability than Ford or Opel/Vauxhall/Buick (all the same). When it comes to using you mobile from the infotainment system, without holding your phone in your hand (illegal in many countries), i.e. make calls etc. Volkswagen's (Skoda's) systems are best I had used so far.

    @Perpetual Radio Networks How does the steering feel? Does it feel heavy and loose/body roll? Or tight & sporty? I have test driven the new Civic and Corolla so far. And have to say I love how the Civic has a way tighter steering feedback then the Corolla does. The Corolla steering is too lose with body roll for my liking. But haven't gotten to test drive the new Jetta yet. How is it with the steering? Tight like a Civic? Or loose like a Corolla?

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately we haven't had a chance to drive either the new Corolla or Civic, but we're hoping to get at least one of them come spring. It's funny, I realize we didn't talk about the Jetta's steering, and that's likely because it was so uneventful it didn't even leave us with a lasting impression. Wasn't overly stiff or loose, got the job done but nothing more.

      For the compact segment the Jetta seems to be pretty good, and the Kia Forte, both have more leg space and width for the driver, and overall the shoulder space is good. We just drove the 2019 Mazda3 and while it isn't overly tight you do feel it more than something like either of those two. The VW Golf/Alltrack also felt similar to the Jetta. If you are thinking to buy a new VW JETTA 2019, think twice.
    I bought this car in May 2019. The 8 speed automatic transmission, beside making a grinding noise when is driving at a constant speed of 30 to 40 miles per hour (+/_ 1,200 RPM), make an annoying vibration. The service department and the VW representative said that the vibration and noise are normal. I think this is the most ridiculos answer that I ever heard from a car manufacturer.
    I when to different VW dealers and drove a brand new car and all have the same problem. Be careful when you test it, maybe you will not notice it at the beginning.
    Just type in Google "Jetta 2019 transmission problems" and you will see.
    Pd: This happens on roads not very steep as we have in florida.
    Thanks

    Personally I quite like the exterior, it feels pretty no-nonsense like VWs have always been and the rear looks a lot like a baby A4. Also a heads up, there are rear vents but they are hidden underneath the front seats. Pretty weird, not sure why they did that but they do work alright.
    What I would like to see are parking sensors as an option, but then again that's not so common in this class...

    The cost cutting is not THAT bad. There are much worse interiors on competitors such as the Sentra, Cruze, Corolla (even the new one), Focus and arguably, even the Civic with its terrible infotainment system. Compared to the mk6, the interior plastics up front are much better and more in line with the excellent for its time mk5 Jetta. Still, when my mom was looking for a new car last summer, she opted for the older 2018 Golf, even though the new Jetta had just come out. In comparaison to the Jetta, the Golf feels like a tank (in a good way) and much more fun to drive + the higher quality interior which makes it feel like a smaller Audi. When I test drove the new Jetta, it felt a lot more rolly polly and the vented seats didn't even work as they were on for at least 15 min and I didn't feel a difference yet. Curiously, when I sat on a demo Jetta Comfortline (base) at the dealership back in August, I found a heated steering wheel button hidden in the menus of the smaller screen but not on the Highline with its 8inch screen.

The Corolla hatch is surprisingly good and I could live with the interior and old infotainment system but the sedan is too awkward on the exterior. For me, the best looking compact sedan inside and out is the 2019 Forte and I'm especially exited for the 2020 Forte GT with 200hp, s 6 spd manual or 7 spd DCT and independent rear suspension.

      We noticed VW axed the Jetta/Bora from the European market while we were researching the fog light segment. It seems like a lot of the Euro-Passat features have made it's way to the Jetta, something we noticed back when we did our NA-Passat video.

    I honestly think VW Group feels that they will sell enough Audi A4, A5, A6, sedans that they don't feel they need to upgrade the Passat in North America.

    You want the perceived quality and toys then you need to buy an Audi. In the UK (and I assume the rest of Europe) you buy your VAG product by brand tier and then trim tier.
    From lowest perceived quality to highest it goes: Seat, Skoda, Volkswagen, Audi.
    I.E - You can get a much higher equipped Golf than A3 but the overall quality is lower. If the Jetta was as well built as the Audi it would cost as much...

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Certainly makes sense, and if VaG wants to make money they need to do that. As long as buyers are aware of it then it's not the worst to have cheaper quality. But the consumer definitely needs to know about it.

      @@PRNTestDrive I'm surprised it's more of a secret over there. Their European strategy was to buy up brands and turn them into a level of VW. Skoda, which I don't believe you get was a laughing stock before VAG bought them. Think Yugo levels of riducule. They sold this communist relic until 1990: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%A0koda_130
      The smart money for private buyers goes on a well specced Skoda Octavia or Superb these days. Just as good as a Golf / Passat unless you want the badge prestige.
      At the same time, European badge snobbery means we all know someone bought a Golf because they can't afford the A3. I'm only half joking about that although the Golf is very popular in its own right.
