    VW deserves to sell boatloads of these. A great daily driver. Excellent first car for kids off to college at a price point that graduates swimming in student loan debt (or their parents) can afford. And speaking of affordability that 40 mpg figure will jump off the Moroney sticker on the window in the showroom. (40 mpg is MUCH more impressive than 39.) And Kudos to VW for a geared eight speed transmission rather than a CVT. (I'd prefer a DCT but others may differ.)Personally, I love the minimalist, upscale look and feel of VW's interiors. And for those of us who appreciate the elegant looks of European sedans, the exterior is gorgeous.
    Like most VW's the engine power is both underrated in stock form and easily tuned for more performance if desired. I was initially surprised that VW didn't use their 1.8L four banger in the Jetta but its clear they can get the same performance from the smaller engine with the additional benefit of that 40 mpg fuel efficiency. And if one believes the 1.4L turbo isn't up to the task, driving the Jetta will probably convince otherwise. Self-styled "enthusiasts" will complain about the torsion bar rear suspension but I doubt VW will lose a significant number of sales as a result of that particular cost cutting choice, especially in view of the fact that the Jetta isn't meant to be a canyon carver and nine out of ten buyers won't even notice.
    It's not all a bed of roses, especially in the back seat. A big plus for roomy accommodations but the cost containment is evident. For those of us who regularly transport a kid or big dog in the back, the lack of rear AC is REALLY annoying. And if the kid doesn't require a child seat, he/she is gonna want a USB port back there. All in all, though, this is a car for a single driver or a couple with occasional use of the rear seat that's comfortable for a couple of adults. Some may complain about the mesh cover of the sunroof but for those of us who live in places like Seattle where we can use all the light we can get, it's a plus.
    It will be interesting to see what VW has in mind for the GLI, the "luxury" version of the Jetta. Perhaps the version of their 2.0L turbo that's in the Tiguan. (No chance of the version in the GTI, though.) Some additional sound deadening, rear seat AC and a usb charging port, and multi-link rear suspension are possibilities.

    • @Rocketfish17
      @Rocketfish17 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really love the looks and tech of the 19 Jetta, they've really done a great job with it.
      The GLI will be specd the same as the 2019 GTI. 2.0t, 228hp 258lbft torque and sounds like all the other same performance parts. We get to thank the MQB platform for that.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael Pritchard: Perhaps you know something I don't but I seriously doubt the GLI will have the same spec as the GTI. Typically, VW offers a GLI that points toward a more "luxury" look and feel and reserves the performance specs for the GTI and the R.
      I think it's more likely that VW will offer a "performance" tune for the 1.4L engine or the 1.8L four banger used in the Golf Alltrack. If they go to the 2.0L engine, I'd bet the farm that it won't be tuned in the same way as the GTI.

    Thanks for the review! Been considering a new Jetta, but I have a Toyota and reliability is important and you did mention the reliability in the video.... Warranty is great, but I want it to not break! lol

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Toyota sells cars based on their reputation for reliability. But it comes at a price. Specifically, Toyota is very conservative in terms of offering innovation in design and engineering. And Toyotas tend to cut corners in terms of interior appointments and new technology. Their product cycles are generally longer than the competition with relatively few improvements within a particular generation. That's not a criticism. Building in reliability for customers who are prone to abuse and neglect their vehicles comes at a price.
      VW, on the other hand, knows it has an issue of its reputation for reliability among US consumers. (Interestingly, that's not a problem in Europe where consumers tend to be more likely to care for their cars with regular maintenance.) With that in mind, they're offering a much longer warranty than Toyota. But VW wouldn't offer a long warranty if it actually costs them significant money.
      In effect, VW is betting that a six year warranty won't actually be needed by the vast majority of customers. That's not unique. It's true of ANY form of insurance. If you purchase life insurance, the insurance company is betting you won't die while you're covered. If you die, you "win" the bet. :)
      In effect, VW is promising their customers that their vehicles won't "break" for at least six years or 72,000 miles. And if they can't keep that promise, they're obligated to pay for it. VW figures it's a good bet from their perspective and they won't have to pay up. They apparently have faith in the long term reliability of their vehicles. Whether you agree is up to you.

      LordWinter that's the problem with the Jetta...the cost cutting is obvious. The rear headrests are a prime example. I had a 2009 Jetta and it was obvious they put in extra effort. Since the price in today's dollars is pretty equivalent, I assume the money is being spent on tech and driver assistance features rather than those things you mentioned which are what actually makes a car feel special and premium. This new Jetta just seems like VW it based primarily selling size and features only.

      Check if you have anything in the door pocket. Since the door pockets are made of plastic and theres two HUGE speakers in them, anything inside will rattle if you're playing loud music or if you're driving at high speeds where there's going to be vibration. There's no way you should have rattles. You're probably having items in there which are making the buzzing noises. Also you understand these cars have a SIX YEAR warranty where if there actually is a sound (I'm pretty sure you're keeping items inside the door which is acutally making the noise -- your fault not VW's) you could have it fixed anytime you wanted since there's a warranty (but again probably not the car's fault)...

    I think it is a very dated design. Actually though I will NEVER purchase a Volkswagen Corp manufactured vehicle.

      True, and I won't buy a GM car either. At least the VW emissions cheating didn't result in fatalities.

      I never said I would buy GM or Dodge either. Last time I checked, I can spend my hard earned money any way I choose.

      @@broed731 Thank you for saying what people need to hear. American cars are trash and its no mistake they are always on the top 10 most unreliable cars year in and year out. Foreign cars all the way.
