    Thanks James for posting this ! he reminds me of robin lee graham sailing his bill lapsworth 24 ft boat Dove half way around the world when Nat geo gave him a 33 ft Luders to finish. I love the Gary mull ranger 23 and this boat is very capable of doing this trip and this shows a true sailor skills.

    That little buddy heater is overkill in most of my friends ice fishing shelters. That's gotta be a nice blast of comfort when you need it.

    It’s a small boat on a big ocean! Larger boats that were less prepared had made the trip. And smaller one have done it too. He seems to know his boat well and 23 to 26 ft is easy enough to solo sail and not be overburdened. Have fun Sam, hope to see some videos about this adventure.

      I agree a 100% He has been creeping along on his tracker the last 24 hours but just posted a message saying winds are variable and he hove to to rebed a leaking nav light so it seems all is good aboard SV Swedish Fish

    Awesome Sam. I did the trip from Channel Islands Harbor in a Ericson 27 solo. 19 days for me. I could have given you a few tips if I knew sooner. Best of luck young man.

    Wow, all I can say is simply amazing, years from now, he probably can write a book about his madness, although I am not sure if I would call it madness, I would call it Pure Insanity! He's gonna crush it, I know he will! Happy Sailing!!

    Clean bottom , No prop drag - Great , I use to race a beautiful Townson 25 here in NZ & would dive over & take the prop off be fore a race , Ended up starting with 35 footers - Bluddy handicappers . Fair winds

    Wow that type of voyage on a ranger he's got a lot of guts and a lot of Courage and probably a little crazy but I immediately subscribe to his channel and I will be following him also on the tracker I wish him the best of luck I hope he has a better dinghy than the one I saw in your video oh well we all have to do what we have to do

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      right? I think he is equal parts crazy / brave. He has done his research and sailed to most of the islands here with that little boat and I know he will succeed! I think he also has a facebook page but I am not on facebook so I don't know what it is. I am stoked for him!

    In the 90's I read an article about kayaking Cali to Hawaii in Outside. Ideas and thinking can make many vessels ocean going. I think hes gonna crush it! - Would love to know about that dodger! A like wise would fit our lake boat!

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He made the dodger himself ! He took a stainless welding class and bought a sewing machine and did it all !

    How often do you have to pull the boat to clean/paint the bottom? kg

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      if you have fresh antifouling paint you generally scrub it once a month and haul out and paint the bottom every two or three years.

    3 50w panels ttl 150? he could put 1 350w panel on the back and more than double his solar

    • @SailorJames

      I don't think he had the money for a 350w panel and slowly bought the panels as he could.

    Guys theirs cheap many cheap sail boats ready to sail in Stockton Missouri..why I don't know ...but theirs a skiff 22 ft cabin with bed and microwave stove bathroom in mint condition ready to sail ...with tools to work on sailboat ..also has life preservers cooking utensils... Comes with a trailer to haul it the trailer has new tires on it... No interior damage no exterior damage totally remodeled... Owner said...1,800.00 dollars yep 18 hundred bucks and it's yours... Check with the local marina on Stockton Lake in Missouri... For anyone wanting to sell this is your boat... I am too old to sell and looking for a motorboat... Selling would be fun but at my age it's not my cup of tea.

    That boat at the end had an insulated backstay. They stopped using those radios in 1969. That backstay needs replacing.

    • @smaarch1
      @smaarch1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      that is simply not true. SSB requires an insulated backstay

    • @vidguy007
      @vidguy007 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      smaarch1 while you are correct, modern insulated backstays look much different than the ones (as shown) in use on standard radios many years ago And that boat does not look like it has modern anything as always I reserve the right to be wrong
      Looking for pre 1969 rigging is a hobby of mine

    If Sam predicts 20-25 days to get there, then Sam is looking at 6-weeks or so to get home. I want Sam to do really well, but I am scared. The United States Coast Guard informally defines boats with a total length of fewer than 33 feet (10-meters) a small craft - Once he gets 100-miles, It could be glorious or terribly treacherous. I pray itis the former rather than the ladder.

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He told me he might sell this boat in Hawaii and buy a larger boat while he is there to keep going.
