Update: The 5.9K 60fps Raw without USB-C PD only works with RF lenses, not EF lenses. You can still get the advantage of smaller file sizes in 5.9K raw vs 8K raw, but you will need to use RF lenses without USB-C PD or you can use EF lenses with USB-C PD.
Josh, as a primarily R5C user, I was so excited when I saw you re-purchased the R5C, knowing we would be getting some sweet, detail-rich content. This video proves it. Love the "party trick" and you getting the actual numbers from Canon. Thanks so much for your awesome videos!
I also like the speedbooster combined with ISO 6400, which is only one stop above native ISO (3200), and puts the camera effectively at the same EV value as Sony's 12,800 ISO cameras. Pair this with the great in-body noise reduction on R5C (covered by you and Gerald Undone) and it becomes a nice low-light camera.
coming through from the livestream ! thanks for covering this topic
Yep! This video was a lot of fun to make!
Great detailed breakdown, thanks Josh.
There’s one other use similar to your last test, which I discovered while playing around with the viltrox speed booster and the Helios 44-2.
If you use the speed booster in full frame mode, but leave Digital IS off, then in post, crop out the sides of the frame (to a 4:3 or 3:2 aspect ratio), you essentially now have open gate on the R5C.
Great video! Love the R5C content.
Thanks!
Very cool video and very insightful! I’m using the Viltrox .71 EF to RF Speedbooster on the EOS R. Great combo with my Canon 17-40L and will have to try that Digital IS trick on the R.
Thanks for checking out the video!
Great vid my friend. Thank you. I think it's worth experimenting a little with the speedbooster.
👍🏻☀️🌴🌋📸☕🏝
Awesome love your vids Josh
Thank you so much!
I was very close to considering the speed booster until I seen that purple circle 🟣 in the center which only goes away when you zoom in. Defeating the benefit of getting a wider field of view with the speedbooster. Thanks for taking the time out for this very thorough explanation.
Exact, same thing here.
Muy buena info, gracias!
Amazing Video thanks Josh
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Now I'm going to play with this with the 24mm tilt shift. It has an enormous image circle.
Fantastic info. I've been messing around with my R5c more lately. The 8k files are useless on my M1 Mac. But this is something that makes sense. I've been really happy with RAW lately. I was getting good results without it. But yeah it's a gorgeous image.
Thanks Scottie!
I'm doing this on my next shoot:) Thanks bud.
Nice! Let me know how it goes.
Interesting findings. I like the options of 6K. Thanks for the research.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
to someone that still has and uses the original eos r for B cam situations, the speedbooster is something that really catches my attention for 4K recording but unfortunately here in brasil i can't find it anywhere. either way i really found this video interesting and entertaining
Amazing video! Have you try a similar experiment using a speed booster with the FX6? I was thinking about doing this with my Canon FD lenses. See if I can remove the vignetting with the focus breathing removal option.
Thanks! I have never used a speedbooster on a Sony camera. The focus breathing compensation usually only works with specific Sony lenses.
Interesting Video. Such a great idea to use 6k. Thank you for sharing.
Did you experience some overheating issues with the R5C?
You're welcome. No I've never had the R5C overheat. The fan keeps it running.
Hey Josh, thanks for the video! I just got the R5C and this is helpful. A few questions:
1. I have the Metabones EF to RF mount 0.71 Speedbooster. Is the Canon Speedbooster a better option? I have an EF 50mm 1.4 lens that is having issues with the autofocus (but my other EF lenses seem to do just fine). Could this just be a Metabones issue?
2. Does the “eye detection” only work with RF lenses? In the menu, I wasn't able to access that AF feature (and others) with my EF lenses attached. Thanks!
Would love to see it without any crop and a Mamiya medium format lens.
That would be sweet! Now I just need to borrow a few to test…
@@Josh_Sattin I have a few…
Always love your videos esp when they are still relevant to the R5c. I recently sold my RF 14-105 F4 and replaced with both RF 14-35mm F4 & 70-200 F4 and I’m really stoked to try 6k now on the 14-35mm lens. I won’t prob go with speed booster at this time but shooting at 14mm 6k should give me a nice image. I predominately use the 4k XAVC but I’m gonna give 6k a go! Working in premier how do you go about editing the footage? Nice to see the file size too compared to the 4k
Also, what ISO do you recommend shooting in RAW? I know the base ISO is 800 and 3200 and I never has noise issues really in 4k ans of course raw you can change later but do those base ISOs still apply?
I edit in Final Cut Pro. Yes, I would stick to the base ISOs of 800/3200 in raw.
Great test Josh. One thing to note, the Digital IS crop will shift around, so you might notice the vignette shifting around the image.
BTW, I have one question, is the Digital IS on the Canons gyroscope based or image based?
Thanks! Unfortunately I don't know how the R5C applies it's Digital IS.
Cool idea! One could argue that a slightly less sharp image would help the footage appear a little more “cinematic/ film-like” no?
Thanks! That would totally be personal preference and what you are trying to do.
How's you go unclean to clean HDMI. Can you record 2 sperate signals?
Please test noise 8k/4k FF vs 6K with speedbuster at same aperture.
Great video as always Josh.. Mind you my head hurts with all the numbers. Or was that the beers from last night ? lol Question....Does it save on the battery if shooting Super35 ? given you're using less of the sensor ? Perhaps this is a good solution for the battery ?
Thanks! Yeah I probably should have warned people haha. I used to be a math teacher back in the day. I think it's cool to show people how to figure this stuff out so they can understand it and apply it themselves. But you can easily skip over it.
I haven't tested the battery life with 6K raw, but I kind of doubt it. I recently tested the battery life on the R5C in my R5C vs BMCC6K FF video. I got 1 hr in 8K raw and 1hr21min in 4K XF-AVC with the power saving mode turned on. So 6K probably might be somewhere in between.
thanks Josh. Ah that makes perfect sense.. A math's teacher ! no wonder you're a natural with all the numbers. Speaking of batteries and numbers i think it would make a great video, comparing all the recording modes and how each mode affects battery life. That would be an invaluable chart for people to have handy. @@Josh_Sattin You're the best R5C resource out there ! Keep up the great info 🤘
Great video! Do you get more battery life when shooting in 6K raw?
Thanks! I haven't tested it, but I kind of doubt it. I recently tested the battery life on the R5C in my R5C vs BMCC6K FF video. I got 1 hr in 8K raw and 1hr21min in 4K XF-AVC with the power saving mode turned on. So 6K probably might be somewhere in between.
Very nice, looks fun! Have you ever used the Sigma 40mm f1.4? I've read that it has an image circle large enough to cover medium format, so in theory you could shoot 8k raw, with the speedbooster using that lens and get an absolutely absurd look. Appreciate all the videos!
Thanks! I have tried the Sigma 40. It is an incredible lens! I haven't tested out how large the image circle is though.
You have to crop in a little bit, I used to do this all the time with my r5, the sigma 50mm actually covers better than the 40 though, but what’s amazing is you can get a 4:3 medium format video crop because all the vignette is in the wide corners. It gives you better coverage even than the new gfx!
@@kylehessling2679I’ve done this with the Helios 44-2 as well. It’s like having open gate. I’m surprised this doesn’t get talked about more.
@@Chase-Video YES! that was my favorite combo last summer! About a 42mm f1.4 equivalent and even more swirly than the stock Helios!
The viltrox speed booster pro doesn’t have the purple circle! Its cheaper too
Dude my head is 🤯 👍😀
Think it would be interesting to see a comparison between the FX30 with a speedbooster and your R5C with the speedbooster
Interesting stuff! Two questions: 1) In terms of the purple flare spot, is the aftermarket speed booster still better than the Canon one when used on the R5C? 2) How are you feeling about the R5C these days overall? Seems like things have changed some over time, and the R5C keeps popping up as a super interesting option to finally replace my good ole EOS R in my camera rig (with a V-mount).
Thanks! I tested the Viltrox speedbooster a while ago, but I no longer have it. The R5C is still a very powerful but quirky camera. My needs continue to change so right now I have been enjoying owning it. I really hope that Canon comes out with some video focused cameras in 2024.
@@Josh_Sattin Thanks!
Brother if you can do a metabones speed booster on the r mount cameras would really help and you would be the only one I think lol
Cool video! Im curious do you know is Super35 oversampled like the 4K via the firmware? So Is the 6K oversampled ? I like the wider field of view for the sports but tend to crop in for social and that's when I notice things like 4K60 vs 4k120 having a difference and the 4K120 is softer.
It’s not oversampled in the 6K mode but it’s also not line-skipped like the 4k120p mode either, so is still very sharp, much sharper than the 120p modes.
I couldn't find any information about the 4K modes in Super 35. I would guess that the 4K XF-AVC and MP4 modes in Super 35mm are oversampled from the 6K up to 60 fps. But I don't know for sure.
How to create a new folder in the CFexpress cards to record new videos? *after reaching the maximum number reached error* when my card still had space for more shoots
If you can snag the S/B made by Vitrox (Canon sent a cease and desist), it has a positive locking mechanism and...NO PURPLE FLARE.
Thanks for the video. You mentioned the R5C can shoot 6K raw in super 35 without the requirement of an external power source. I've tried this with mine but 60p raw only works with a fully manual lens without the PD power source regardless of being in super 35 or full frame mode.
You're welcome! It works on mine with a RF lens. Are you using a Canon brand LPE6NH battery?
Yes using a fully charged Canon R5C LPE6NH battery. I've tried with an RF 85mm f2 & R5 35mm f1.8 as well as a few EF lenses with an adaptor. Always get a message warning the lens won't work without external power. Wondering if your R5C copy is perhaps a later build that allows this.
Correction - just tried again - 60p raw does work with R5 35mm f1.8 and RF 16mm f2.8 in super 35 mode. I guess all my other electronic lenses pull too much power.
I used it with my RF 15-35 and RF 24-70.
interesting, i just stumbled over this myself and was quite perplexed at first. my RF 24-70 2.8 works perfectly fine in 6k60 raw, but all adapted EF lenses (sigma 20, 35, 50, canon 85 1.4 and 135) do not work without usb-c power. i guess its rather save to say that the camera blocks all adapted lenses.
When I use my R5c with the speed booster, I can put on my 40 mm canon pancake lens and there’s no vignetting.. I also have Olympus old lenses that clears the sensor with the speed booster too..
👏
Very cool and insightful video. I just have one question, can I use the speedbooster with my Sigma 18-35 f1.8 lens? in full frame mode?
Thanks. No, it works the other way around. You need to use a full frame lens and the speedbooster in S35 mode. Here is a video explaining everything about speedboosters: th-cam.com/video/7E7jKZq7VyA/w-d-xo.html
Thank you@@Josh_Sattin going over to know more about speedboosters.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Very interesting and I am confused because you have another video about the R6 MK2 6K raw video where your opinion is different or perhaps I don't understand the difference between R6 video and the R6
I am not sure what you are confused about so maybe you can expand on your question. I think you might be confused about my thoughts about the raw on the R5C and R6II. They are different cameras and their capabilities are different. I don't think it is worth shooting external ProRes Raw with the R6II, which is what I stated in my video about the raw on the R6II. The R5C raw (which is recorded internally) does give you more dynamic range and more flexibility in post than the internal compressed XF-AVC or MP4. Different cameras.
@@Josh_Sattin exactly perhaps I am disappointed with my purchase of the R6 M2
@@joseacarrasmR5C is in Canon’s cinema line so is in a different class to their other hybrids. The R6mkII is still plenty capable.
Speedbooster klls its sharpness, I would use the wider lens
If the purple circle disappears with zoom, does that mean it’s comparable to a VNd in which it doesn’t like wide angle lenses?
50mm and above could achieve the wider field of view and extra stop of light without the purple circle.
No. This just has to do with the optics in this lens. The purple circle appears differently with different lenses.
Will this booster work on a Cannon R6 mirror less ?
I've never used the R6, but it should work in it's APSC modes. Can't tell you for sure though.
I still haven t found use for digitial stabilization .. its just terrible
The digital stabilization in the EOS R is surprisingly good. I don't know if that is also true for the R5C.. Have you tried the R5C's and found it to be bad?
@@tptrsn yes i did maybe its beacause i m using only manuel lenses and not rf canon ones , but i used it once and never again
@@Corruptlol187 Ok, thank you! That definitely make a difference. I've only tried it recently with EF lenses, which work well also.
Speedbooster Viltrox no longer delivered
It’s almost impossible to find too
