It is superb. It has become my hook, an earworm. I can hear it on and on...Steve had such a great attitude, and an ability to carry the whole thing forward - more than the drummer! Just great.
Completely agree. The Fall are the Fall. A one off of artistic vision that challenges and opens ears to listen to other music one wouldn’t have listened to. Also inspiring the listener to go to the library and rent out the literature of Albert Camus. It’s like when I talk to people about the Fall before I play the Fall. They say, what does the Fall sound like. I reply, The Fall sounds like The Fall. Mark E Smith was once asked in an interview what his favourite shop was. He replied ‘Bargain Booze’. Such a great answer.
I've heard King Gizzard quote this song quite a bit in some of their live shows, and they did it again at The Anthem, Washington DC. Holy moly I love this song now thanks to them.
The Fall - Blindness (2005) 1354pm 28.8.23 fucking embarrassing is 'ow i described the fawning over bands. i mean, cool wanting to meet yer idles or have them let you bugger about in the studio as they record their music but c'mon... after yerv sat outside their homes for god knows how long...you only end up blaming someone else, anyway...
Even Mark's old dad before he passed away told him something like " lad, I'm really proud of what you've done" & this was fucking years ago! Brilliant. Nice one M.E.S. And nice one Marks dad & mam for producing a fucking killer! Lol. ;) John Peel knew the fucking score.
You know how back in the day there were TV ads for new Windows operating systems? And they used iconic songs, like "Start Me Up" for Windows 95 and "Ray of Light" for XP? Well, when I switched over to Linux, I figured that *I* needed a song to symbolize my new OS. "Blindness" was being used in a TV ad for a car at the time. So I picked this song for my switch to penguinny goodness...even though I couldn't name another song by The Fall if I tried. So for me, whenever I hear this song, I think of Linux. 🐧
Most VU tracks are not grooved they are not even that good. Repetition is not something I hear in either them or this lot. Much classical music is repetitive to the point of madness. See MOZART.
Paper times two Paper times two Paper everywhere and not a drop of water to be seen I said I was by the ocean I saw a poster I am licking my feet I am licking my feet
My intro was the Short Circuit Live at the Electric Circus 10". Stepping Out. A seminal record for me which also includes Cooper Clarke, a young, punk Joy Division, Drones, Buzzcocks.
It's a good bit of bass...but isn't it taken from 'Witness (1 hope)' by Roots Manuva? It's essentially the same thing except with more bass and no 'trancy' up beat at the end.
Unfashionably late, I recognised this bassline from roots manuva, witness the fitness. Apologies to all, it was so much simpler when I had a weekly music press to enlighten me. Nothing between them though, just that bass
ignore him man, most of us Americans realize how fucked up Iraq was, but we've got this weird thing where you still have to praise people who signed up to fight this racist oil war as "heroes" as if they weren't complicity, as if they didn't have a moral duty to watch the news and get informed
I always wondered if the version on the UK pressing is different from the US Narnack 2xLP pressing, and it is. I prefer the latter (marked "alternate version") on the label...I love this LP so much I bought it twice, I managed to score the white w/black splatter version NM/NM--and I paid LESS than I did for the regular black pressing! Both rare records but the white w/black variant is like rocking horse shit. Incredible record. I dunno why the UK version is pressed on one LP, I may get it one day.
@@DaveAnchovies I heard it a while back, I really like the Jools Holland version as well! There's another one I have saved as part of a gig from around the same time...will try and find it, cheers!
If by 'this performance' you mean the studio one, sorry but no. However this live version is the best one I've ever hard by far, the band are so tight it's unreal, an absolutely relentless performance. th-cam.com/video/rH1KhxKh1YA/w-d-xo.html
+RedEye 420 this is the brilliant last song ever played at The Hammersmith Palais. i'm looking for Trondheim, Norway video. Same lineup, more blistering version even. outdoor festival with the most hilarious confused audience, didnt know what to make of it all.
Not really, the Pixies were more accessible and Sonic Youth were more avant garde, at least up to and including Daydream Nation. I like the Fall but always struggled to really get into them. Smith is a legend though.
Possibly the best bassline ever?
so simple yet so strong. a driving force, an unshakeable foundation.
The filthiest bass line ever
It is superb. It has become my hook, an earworm. I can hear it on and on...Steve had such a great attitude, and an ability to carry the whole thing forward - more than the drummer! Just great.
Inspired by Roots manuva "witness"...but ya, filthy usage here.
@@dannyfearon9905 It's a dirty fucker.
saw this live and looked down from a balcony and saw my friend look up at me all wild eyed at the back of a massive conga line
Absolutely fucking majestic. Can't believe we're now discussing The Fall in the past tense... :(
Although Mark E. Smith is gone, his music lives forever. Always remember The Fall.
The bass sound on this is technically illegal.
Geneva Convention contravention is clear
you think it's already in, then it comes in
it should have its own act of parliament to make leeee-gal
For sure. Mark E Smiths observational skills and poetry are 10/10. That groove is 11/10.

Imagine not thinking this is the best band in the world.
It's hard.
Possible even if im a big fan
top comment; you clearly have a sensibility
I agree. out of this world
Top tier comment. ❤
needs the bass turned up a bit
I've heard King Gizzard quote this song quite a bit in some of their live shows, and they did it again at The Anthem, Washington DC. Holy moly I love this song now thanks to them.
It's addictive 😊
inject that bassline straight into my bloodstream
I reckon !!!! 💉
YESSS, PLEASE!

I Bow from Manchester Blackley M9 ,56 now followed The Fall all my life, we are the fall we are the fall we are the fall BLINDNESS
Said many times before but this is the best intro to any song.....
If you like this song you'll love Viagra boys, very similar style of bass line awesomeness
Swamp Thing by The Chameleons. That whole thing was done in one take.
The version from their last Peel session is fantastic too.
Seriously the vocal performance is incredibly good
Sound like the invasion of the death metal daleks topped with the ranting of a mad prophet - I love every version of this song I have heard
fantastic description of this epic song; nice one
It's such a raw 70's sound. Love it.

This is not alternative because there is no alternative
This is not post punk because punk has always been
This is The Fall
And MES always will be
yeah, baby....indeed
Bass so relentless
Dirty!!

gonna miss him big time, but what a legacy!

RIP, Mark E. Smith, thank you
We will never see the likes of Mark E Smith ever again.
I love Bacon too. Boss painter. Cheers JB. ;)
On the bright side, MES has been cancer free for 2 years.
Thou shalt have no god beyond me
No. We won;t be allowed to hear another Mark E Smith
The only band that matters.
There was another band, oh what were they called, shoot they dont matter
I will play this daily until I die RIP MES

This is in my top 5 all time.
Probably the best record ever.👍
Yes, with Ratus Norvegicus and Machine Gun Etiquette ;)
the best version! (especially beginning of the song)
Peel sessions version all day.

Totally love that aggressive filthy bass
Just got readmitted to hospingtile and this bass is going to get me through. Get on the groove and stay on it!
Why they removed this song from Spotify ?
This track came on today on my bike ride. I had to stop because it was so good I was starting to push too hard. God damn.
Just got out of hospingtile and this bass got me through it all. Get on the groove and stay on it.
The fall were a serious good band. 😊
Great head track to motivate when up to no good 😜.
this is the best intro to any song.....
Shame about the rest of the song.
The FLAT is evil!
Also: it's not repetition it's discipline. What's more it's funky discipline.
Witness the fitness by roots manuva has an almost identical bass line
This song is nuts
Dear God! Its freaking awesome man!😮🎸🎸🎸🕺🕺🕺
Wow. Who knew the mitsubishi team would use this song to sell Outlanders in 2006?
Rest in Peace.
we are the fall, y'all, all of usssss....
A better repetitive groove than Venus In Furs, fight me about it
There is no sense fighting about facts.
That tone switchup at 0:33 smacks me in the face every time
You are correct, sir
Damn. Them's fightin' words, even though I half agree with ya.
Most VU tracks are not grooved they are not even that good. Repetition is not something I hear in either them or this lot. Much classical music is repetitive to the point of madness. See MOZART.
" if it's me and your granny on the bongos.....it's THE FALL"
Hermoso bajo ronco y fangoso 🖤
there is all other music; and there is The Fall....
bassline is 13 on the Richter scale
The Best. The rest were mere scrubs. We love you Mark.
Great song
"Blind man have mercy on me"
Fuckin' filthy!! Thanks Mark. Band too.

Seen them on this tour supported by John Cooper Clarke. Fucking brilliant!

This is really good when you need a break from tinitus.
Vocals recorded outfront a British isle pub while a drunk homeless man is shouting at a wall whilst he makes love to it's poster.
thats why they are perfect
The day music died.........What will life be like without the Fall?
Well said. Fuck fatass Don Mc Lean & his shitty American pie!!
Pretty dam miserable without marks creativeness..
There's plenty of great music still being churned out! It's always an amazing time to be a music fan.
Needs more bass.
Sean Johnstone dropped this at Convenanaza 2024 after party debrief. Immediately changed the vibe. 'tis pure filth!!
It's a good bit of bass...but isn't it taken from 'Witness (1 hope)' by Roots Manuva? It's essentially the same thing except with more bass and no 'trancy' up beat at the end.
100%
And calvary
The very last note sounds like the 1st notes from This Heat - Health and Efficiency. Must be an influence.
RIP mark :(
Music began and ed ended with the FaLl. ..the end👺
Brilliant!
I'd love an instrumental version of this song.
Damn !
Unfashionably late, I recognised this bassline from roots manuva, witness the fitness. Apologies to all, it was so much simpler when I had a weekly music press to enlighten me. Nothing between them though, just that bass
Hadn't heard that one before but you're right. And it came out 4 years before this. 😬🤐
In your FACE !.....I was only on one leg the road hadn't been fixed I had to get home by half past six .CLASSIC FALL.
We played this in Iraq while we were on are way to a check point, got us hyped up
and I thought I was the only one in Iraq listening to The Fall, but that was OIF 1, almost 15 years ago now.
Both these comments make me happy. Good men.
Do USA proud man thankyou for this comment

That is the stuff he would have loved!!
Mark E Smith. PBUH
Por acaso, mas só por acaso estou aqui por causa do baixo
I'd love a version of this where all the vocals are replaced with Dr Steve Brule dialogue
RIP, MES

This was used in an advertisement! Please link it if you have it laying around!

Best song of all time, haters mad it was thsi easy
Where’s north from ‘ere? 🤔
nobody can run that fast for that long so we'll do it ;)
Last great record ever made. Smoking ban ruined everything.
Fuckin Spotify. Removed this great song froms its catalogue
Is this song on Spotify?
I think Spotify banned it due to that bass.
Anyone else here because of King Gizzard quoting the riff every time they play Ice V
there was video of this performance posted but its disappeared. Anyone know where it is?

The Fall is at another level. Forget pixies, sonic youth, pavement, steve albini and the like.
Hup!
can do without the others but steve albini is a fockin legend
Slow down Sunny Jim.

Rub a little My Bloody Valentine and some Lush on that. Take a full dose of Talking Heads, and don't call me in the morning.
