  • If you modify the side cover and put a bolt through the pull cord wheel of the recoil starter it can be easily started with a good cordless drill instead of pulling the cord.

The reason I'm switching to cordless is a shoulder replacement. Gas saws should be designed to be starter by cordless drill now that nearly everyone who would own a chainsaw already has cordless tools.

Agreed. I have right shoulder replacement also. I have thought of this before but didn't know how to do it. I need details.

I just tried this on my Stihl 026. It didn't start. What am I doing wrong?

Just what I need now.. I have a 385xp, but have developed bone cancer, unable to pull anymore.. The big question is where can I buy the tool or plans to make my own??? Please help.. I use it on a Logosol sawmill, really enjoy cutting small special chunks of wood..
    Thank You
    David

I'm getting infusions this week for my own health battle, but when I get back I'll make a how to video on this for you! All it is is a combination of a drill and socket, the hub from the original recoil starter, and a bolt and some nuts. The drill runs in reverse, and makes it easy. I'm planning on making a few small changes to include a bearing for the hub since it doesn't like dancing loosely, but I'll include those in my video. Good luck in your battle, look for a new video about this in the next week or two.

sounds nice useing the original hub. will not kick the drill bavkwards..
Looking forward to your seeing idea simpiler than others i've seen...
Good luck on your treatments, it's not easy, hang in there..
      Thanks again

I wonder how much will that hole affect cooling?

    • @vegeycracker
      @vegeycracker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It hasn't seemed to make a difference in cooling, given that the flywheel cover is already vented it's not too surprising

Great idea until the end of crankshaft snaps off ..they ARE NOT designed for this ...the nut should be carefully tensioned with a tension wrench

You realize it's the exact same shaft holding the recoil start though, right? The nut holding the collet on your drill will snap first. If the end of the crankshaft snapped off with this, it would also snap off with a pull on the recoil starter

What kind of drill bit is that? Where can I get that?

That was a socket I ground out and welded a stem onto. For smaller engines you can use the method shown in the pinned comment.

if you have bad shoulders, this idea makes it where someone who is disabled can still start one
