    The scene from Crocodile Dundee comes to mind. That's not a saw...this is a saw. Then you pull out the 3120. I like Herne for the name, though, short for Hernea.

    You’re right about the 3120 being a beast I have a 36 inch bar on mine and it only comes out for the big wood. It’s usually eucalyptus oak or pine.

    Recommendation for a name of the big saw - Helga. I have done a fair amount slabbing and cutting a table top is easiest done with an Alaska mill frame for the big saw. Cookie slices tend to crack and split big time so definitely keep it out of the sun. They make products to slow down the drying time so cracking doesn’t happen but an exterior latex paint works well to paint it with. This lets the moisture come very slowly so the slab stays intact. GNI:)

    Don't get to see a 3120 run very often!!! What a hoss!! A 5' bar might be a bit too much to be practical, LOL!! So, we know a 395 (and I'd guess a 592 also) are pretty thirsty saws, but how thirsty is a 3120? I'd like to take one for a ride sometime, but my little 395 takes care of all my big stuff so far. Right now I've only got a 32" for it, but I keep threatening to get a 42" "just in case".
    Good Nite Irene, wherever you are!!

    In light of Big Ash's passing, I feel it necessary to say a few words:
    For those who knew him, Big Ash was a monarch: A tree who stood out amongst all of his brethren. Standing strong and tall for nearly 160 years, he weathered countless winter storms, freezing and baking temperatures, strong winds, soaking rains, and pelting hail. He provided shaded respite for those looking to escape the blazing summer sun, and a place for farmers to leave discarded items such as chains and rebar. Many a woodland creature sought shelter amongst his branches, including birds that nestled in his branches and those that simply stopped to rest for a moment or two mid-flight. Even after a long, brave, arduous battle with the nefarious Emerald Ash Borer, which he would ultimately lose, Big Ash continued to provide shelter to mice within his warm and safe inner chambers.
    Let us not mourn the death of Big Ash, but rather celebrate his long and fruitful life. For his death will not be in vain, for even though he no longer stands tall and proud, his legacy will live on in the heat and comfort that he will continue to provide to countless cold souls as he lives on in beautiful stacks of firewood and dancing flames behind the hearth. We salute you Big Ash! You will never be forgotten. Amen.

    Hi Chris! - a helper handle is pretty inexpensive and would allow a better cut with two guys. It bolts on to those two holes on the end of the bar. Something to think about if you're making your Dad a clean table top. Awesome video, as usual. Have a great day!

  • @jeanvaljohn3921

    The lesson that I am taking away from this outing is.
    For the purposes of fire wood , there is no reason to allow a tree to get larger than 23" in diameter.
    If you are planting trees for fine furniture, sure go ahead and go crazy.
    Imagine if that were black oak ? Or walnut.
    This was some kind of adventure. Glad you took the time to share it.

  • @waynetharp
    @waynetharp ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Yep...That is a lot of firewood!! And even if it wasn't the easiest route. You 3 got er done!💪💪💪
    Might need a slightly less aggressive chain for the 3120 especially in dry/hard Ash. This one looks totally exhausting! I believe sometimes when chains hit steel or concrete it can actually slightly bend some teeth. No matter how much sharpening you do from then on. It will never cut correctly again and might be what happened with 592 chain? Because it was worn down but still should have had some life left yet.
    Have a great weekend, Woodhounds!

    • @InTheWoodyard
      @InTheWoodyard  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I take rakers down on a new chain right out of the box as well, IMHO whether a person does 1-2-3-4 passes depends as much on the guy leaning on the file from light to aggressive as the number of strokes😉. Which is one of the reasons I prefer to use a raker gauge when available as it keeps things consistent throughout the life of the chain. YMMV

    • @InTheWoodyard
      @InTheWoodyard  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup, I agree! A lot can be felt as it cuts too, as far as if it needs more or less.

      @iffykidmn8170 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am curious at the end of chain life where you replaced the chain because you stated it quit cutting if at that point you ever tried setting the rakers with a gauge to see if it would get the chain cutting again?

We called ours "agent orange" because that saw would wear you down. To start the 2095 was our biggest one. Sometimes we needed two of these heavyweights. Then agent orange. Really enjoy your videos. Extra care with those big saws with any saw really. Don't envy you at all. Be careful and good luck.

      @In The Woodyard amazing, I was thinking the exact same thing, but didn't want to type all that in. Mom was born on the Minnesota homestead in 1910. It had 200 acres of oak, they cleared it to open fields to grow alpha for their dairy, and built a saw mill to cut material needed to build the 3 story farm house. She had 7 brothers and 6 sisters, but 4 didn't survive childhood. Grandpa died at 29 in a tractor accident, and grandma was on her own. Tough stubborn Norwegians. Stay safe.

    Once your saw chain cutters get worn halfway, drop one file size to keep the shape of the gullet. It makes a huge difference. Just filmed a video of a chain worn about halfway that needs gullet reshaping versus a brand new ome, both very sharp. 4-6sec difference between the two saw chains. Try a size smaller file or sharpening bit to see if that makes a difference. With all the cutting you do, would be a good one to film for your viewers.

    • @obxkoastie8170
      @obxkoastie8170 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was just about to make the same comment. His chain had a ski slope instead of a nice "C" in the gullet. If he dropped down to a 13/64 or even better a 3/16 file and hogged out the ski slope he'd be cutting all the way to the witness marks. Racing chains all have practically no top tooth left but an almost perfect "C."
      On my grinder when the top plate of a 3/8 chain gets half worn I drop down from a normal 3/16" wheel to a 1/8" grinding wheel in order to get the gullet with a perfect "C." I can grind all the way to the witness mark and the chip removal increases with chain speed as there is less drag due to a reduction in the size of the top plate. This is why .325 chain offers a narrow kerf option to increase chain speed.

      It can be done but not for long, I guess compared to chopping it all with an axe, it was pretty easy. Maybe a 6 or 7 not impossible.

    • @InTheWoodyard
      @InTheWoodyard  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can go down to a nub if you want but in my opinion and professional loggers opinions about 2/3 of the way to the end for best cutting and that can be anywhere from 6-8 or 10-12? if your wood is clean and you don't hit anything bad.

  • @thebatjake
    @thebatjake ปีที่แล้ว +1

    mr chris guy, get yourself a full house chain for the smaller XP, no reason your running a skip chain. Them saws stock have plenty of power to pull a full house semi chisel or full chisel chain (at max recommended bar lengths). Been running a full house semi chisel 28" bar on my 562XP for like 5-6 years now and it still shreds, and a full house semi chisel 36" on my 592. Make that Oak cry, not problems at all.
