      This scoop just in from our man-on-the-scene reporter Bernard "Just call me Barney" Bunsagger: The so-called government of Portland Oregon has just surpassed, I repeat, has just surpassed its counterpart in Los Angeles (no mean feat, I might add) to win the coveted "Epic Fail 2020 Award". For those keeping track at home, it was the concentration of human feces and used syringes per square block downtown that gave Portland the edge. Go, City of Roses! Take that, City of Angels! Keep trying, City by the Bay!
      Signed,
      I grew up in Portland, but I'm quite happy to be living ten time zones away now, in Helsinki, where I ended up mostly because my wife is Finnish. Never in my worst nightmares would I have thought that such a once-beautiful city as Portland, regularly voted one of the most liveable cities in the US, would end up as it has.

    • @Wii505
      @Wii505 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ya, but you got to think about that Blockbuster and Kodak not being around no more or their bad reputation nowadays. Blockbuster didn't do Movies in the mail until it was to late and Kodak didn't see digital cameras being the future until it was to late. So you can say that they are failures nowadays, but not in the past. So, you are both right if you are not talking about the present day times, but instead when those companies were still at the top of their game.

      Laserdisc didn't fail. The people failed it. Superior quality compared to VHS. No deterioration after each view although some discs failed to play after a few years from laser rot. Uncompressed high quality audio. Way ahead of VHS. It was out for 20 years before being replaced by DVD in 1997.

      Blockbuster became aware of Netflix before they got big and the CEO of Blockbuster refused a proposal to go the same route. He famously said " no one will watch a movie on their computer." That's a huge failure.

    There was a guy from the Netherlands who, after the was wanted to publish a book he had found. One publisher called it "Teenage drivel that, even if the context was still irrelevant, would be utterly uninteresting to everyone who tries to read it."

      k re, I totally disagree. Very poor management and shitty employees drove it into the ground. They had a chance to acquire Netflix and decided not to. Doesn't matter anyway. I've always had bad experiences with these drunk clowns. They frequently treated me like they couldn't care less and the assholes wouldn't even accept their own gift cards! Had to throw away a $75 gift card because they refused to let me rent certain titles with it. I'm glad they went under. They are an example of the worst customer service. I think part of it has to do with hiring very immature people. They should have tried raising the minimum working age to 21 since I've only seen high school students in their chains.

People talking like this exhibit would have helped me feel okay with it a lot faster than I have. I always try to remember at my age, JK Rowling wasn't successful and Walt Disney was fired from a job for not being creative enough. Bet the guy who fired Walt was kicking himself.

      @Colorado Strong I'd imagine it's because skill-based employment (the type which requires a degree or certification) places less emphasis on public perceptions of an individual than do jobs in hospitality or the service sector. I know from experience- being short and looking young- that employers in those sectors often pay and promote based on superficial judgments rather than actual competence; that what you are capable of doing does not matter so much as what it's assumed a person is capable or incapable of doing. In a skill-based job, you're being hired because it's known already that you are qualified for the job.

    I'm old enough to remember New Coke. The problem wasn't that it tasted bad, tasted like Coke but was sweeter, like a fountain drink where the syrup/carbonated water balance was tweaked more toward the syrup. If it were introduced as a soft drink under another name no one would complain about the taste. The problem was that it wasn't Coke and people who preferred the taste of Coke over the sweeter Pepsi were upset that the original was no longer available. I personally think it was a change made in the switch from cane sugar to high fructose corn syrup. I don't know that for a fact, but I thunk that was around the same time.

    The needles on the portable record player were simplicity in itself to replace. By the mid to late eighties, stylus' were contained in a plastic unit which clipped into the front of the arm. They did their job well and fidelity was great at the time. Some upmarket record players had proprietary fittings but the most common used by many brands was that red one pictured. You can still get them

      I was saddened when I heard that. Be lucky that store lasted through two decades of brainless idiots who actually think today that Blockbuster WAS a failure. They only think this because they didn't have as much fun as we did growing up with that franchise around.

  • @BrettJeffries
    @BrettJeffries 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    LaserDiscs don't belong in that museum. Unlike RCA's SelectaVision discs (a much better choice for the museum), they were on the market for over a decade and were very popular with those who could afford them. When higher definition laserdiscs were released in the form of DVDs, the technology forced the retirement of videotape. It's also a little unfair to pick on Blockbuster and video stores because they were wildly popular, but it was too expensive to convert to the new technologies. Like Kodak, they did what they needed to do at the time. However, I remember stocking Ayds in our drug store. Even before the 1980's, the brand didn't sell very well.

    • @benaheide
      @benaheide 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kodak absolutely did not do what they needed to do at the time. They literally invented the digital camera but sat on it in fear of losing business, until other companies.... went digital. I would put them in the museum as well.

    Some of these are just examples of obsolescence rather than failure. For example, laserdisc was around for about 25 years and was the high end choice for videophiles. Quality was actually much better than VHS and pioneered the use of letterboxing, anamorphic widescreen, digital surround sound and the inclusion of the extra features (like audio commentary, deleted scenes, etc) we now enjoy on DVD and Blu ray.
