I grew up there in 70s and 80s, it was clean and beautiful to an extent, but dangerous and "ugly" too. I remember the selling of drugs, cocaine, pimps and prostitutes there especially on Sunset Blvd and Santa Monica Blvd, various "adult book stores" and the Pussycat x movie theaters. Hedonistic.
People were friendlier back then and rent was really cheap.
      Not anymore.

In about 1923, my mother and her parents visited relatives in California for a month or so. Mother shot snapshots of the stars of the movies on location in the LA area. In those days, film companies drove around till they found a likely location, unloaded camera, director, and actors, and shot a 30-minute feature. Anybody wandering by could snap all the shots they wanted. Unhappily, mother destroyed all her photos when she was about 95.

When I came back in the 2010s, it was tolerable but not as good. When I last visited in 2019 I saw the signs of decay…really bad.

I have a friend who used to work at the payless shoe source on the corner of Hollywood and Wilcox, right across from the old Pacific theater and round the corner from the "you are the star" mural - it's a damn shame what happened to that mural, I remember when it was beautiful, it was vibrant the colors were vivid, now it's faded and defaced by people who don't care about the great history of Hollywood.
I remember we used to eat at a place just down the street called Star Burgers, they used to have great burgers there.

When I was there last year around this time, it was full of homeless people. It's a bit bizarre to have those food delivery robots driving around right in front of their noses... The last time before that when I visited the Boulevard (back in 2014) it all felt way more magical and cliché, compared to what it turned into these last 10 years. Such a shame how it feels like a ghost town.

Hollywood Blvd has long had a checkered history. I recall it from years ago, way before Adam was living near there. The bldg next to where the Jimmy Kimmel show is done (& has a sign on its roof promoting the Haunting in Venice movie) was long abandoned. The Dolby Theater complex where Adam is filming from above the street was a parking lot until around 2000. Around the same time, the bldg where the Tussand museum is located next to Grauman's was a parking lot. A lot of properties around the Pantages Theater were an assortment of parking lots & small bldgs occupied by stores like Pep Boys auto parts. The nearby old Broadway Hollywood bldg was vacant for years (it's now apts), & the W Hotel across the street didn't exist until 2008.

I also auditioned at many of the tv and film studios as well as theaters around the area. From ‘05 to ‘10 I lived elsewhere, came back to Los Angeles by 2011 or so. Things in Hollywood had changed but weren’t as bad compared to when I finally moved out of California permanently in 2018.

I used to go to the Hollywood and Highland area and walk around there and where the Egyptian theater is. That was from about 2004 until 2014. But it started getting unsafe, imo. There were too many crazy people around and frequent shootings. I stopped going. But I had some great times before. I was surprised by how many of the stores are closed. But when I think about it, if I don't feel safe probably others don't either. Thanks for going out there. It was fun visiting from afar.

I moved to Hollywood in 2012 and lived there until 2021, the first few years from 2012 to 2016 were amazing, had the time of my life, people have always been different out there but then after 2016 something drastically changed, the culture got very bizarre and then especially after "covid" and all this other non sense came along it became unlivable and unbearable for normal people with common sense so I bolted in April 2021 for good. Every time I see a video like this of Hollywood/Los Angeles it makes me a little sad, because I miss those earlier days I lived out there. I have a lifetime of memories and a ton of interesting stories to share from living in Hollywood though.

Adam, to be fair Hollywood has been a S-hole city for many years. I should know, I’m born and raised here in Southern California, about 20 miles west of Hollywood. Unfortunately ton of history is being erased in that town.
The city has really been on an even faster downward spiral over the last 3 1/2 years though. A city with no rules. A prime example was those guys on the dirt bikes popping wheelies along Hollywood Blvd.
And Cahuenga, is pronounced Kowanga or Kawengha. Lol. The ‘h’ is silent.

What caused the city to tear down so fast? When I visited LA in 2014 it all felt way nicer. I came back last year and ended up in misery. Homeless people everywhere, about half of all stores were emptied up, all activities at night (like bars and such) felt very isolated... Being from Europe, I'm actually really afraid to go back. My visit last year kind of ruined the image of 'Hollywood' in my mind. Hopefully things will crawl back up in the future.

Kress was the name of the department store the building was originally built for. After Fredericks left (having been there since the 60's) developers sunk a fortune into restoring it and went back to using the Kress name to start a multi story nightclub that didn't last too long and still sits empty to this day.

Every once in a while I liked to make the trek down to see a movie at the Cinerama Dome. It was just a different vibe. The last movie I think I saw there was The Doors in ‘91 🎹🎸🥁

HEY ATW...IT SEEMS LIKE YESTERDAY WHEN YOU WERE living there. I remember you walking around at night and filming the night life and Hollywood Blvd was busier at night than during the day! There was a old bearded man whom spoke with you for an extended period and he was actually so weird it was hilarious! You certainly have lived an adventurous life. I can't believe you are even thinking of slowing down!?!! You just lost a chunk of weight, nothing holding you down, good health, good to GO! Its not just a job...its an adventure!

I spent two weeks last summer living just down North Gower Street around the corner at Fountain, south from the Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles. Gower St. has gotten kind of rough with several tent cities spanning for a block or two. So many productions have been shot at Gower Studios, and right outside is sketchy. There were a few gunshots at night, some people definitely off their meds. I had no idea your old apartment was just minutes away by foot!

Saw Terminator 2 there at the Dome in 92.
Saw Hello, Dolly there in 69.
    Great sound!
Miss the older buses from the RTD and
especially the old 5 star "Hollywood Special" streetlights.

I still love Hollywood although it is the trenches now. I was there just yesterday up and down sunset and the blvd. The familiarity of the neighborhood keeps me going back
EDIT: Learned some new stuff here as well, like alley Keaton alley by 1640 and TSG. Great vid.
