How To Pick The Perfect Watermelon

- What’s a summer picnic without a juicy, delicious watermelon? But before we slice it open, let’s back up to when we first decided it was the right one to purchase.
If you’re like most people, you could use a few tips when at the market. And in today’s video we’ll highlight 5 tips on how to pick the right one.
1. Field Spot
This is the creamy or yellow part of the watermelon’s shell that rested on the ground. What can that color tell you? It’s almost as if it’s an inside peek, indicating that it basked a long time in the sun, ripening.
Avoid ones with white spots, as they needed more sunbathing time before being plucked from the vine.
2. Webbing
We can thank bees for playing such an important role in this process; their pollination is what kicked things off. Excess pollination will create lots of brown webbing. A large amount of webbing is your clue that the inside is ripe and sweet.
3. Gender
Yes, a watermelon has a gender. The tall - or long ones - are males. If the watermelon is plump, round or stout, it’s classified as a female. Take a moment to guess which one is the sweetest. It’s the girl! And if it’s a bizarre shape, it indicates its growth was not an easy process as it probably struggled for sunlight and water.
4. Size
In the case of the watermelon, the largest ones aren’t necessarily the tastiest. The best ones are average in size. Rule of thumb; don’t pick one too large or too small.
5. Tail
Taking a final glimpse of the watermelon, we must examine its tail. If it’s green, skip it. That is an indicator that it isn’t quite ripe. Instead, go with the one that looks dried.

So more webbing, yellow is good, round and mid in size, and finally dried tail. Got it! ✔
Well, maybe you didn't get it because the one with the webbing had a green tail...
@@nvmffs sweetest ones are the ones with dry tails 💪🏼
so glad a person actually narrated this 😊
I've been growing is all kinds of veggies and herbs for years now. Just started pumpkin this year can't wait to pick it. Thanks for the info
this is a life saver literally the best video ever im so happy thanks for the job well done 😊
This was great information- I've always had a hard time knowing how to pick good 🍉 watermelons! Thank you!
Thumping never worked for me. Ground spot MUST be bright yellow or it isn't ripe. Also, when field picking, just look for the tendrils. The one on the watermelon stem and on either side ,all three have to be dried up brown or it isn't ready. Even with the spot bright yellow- I learned my lesson the hard way.
Me too. This was awesome
While driving through central Cal one summer I stopped at a fruit stand on the side of the road and ask the farmer to help me pick a watermelon, he told about the raccoon method, he told me to scratch the surface with my fingernails, the easier it is to scrape off the skin the ripper the melon, the farmer went on to say that he's never seen a raccoon knocking on the shell to determine if the WM is ripe and ready.
great great info, a big watermelon fan here, thanks for sharing.
We love watermelon - so glad I found this video (we always have a hard time picking out the "right" watermelon!)
My favorite fruit is water melon so im very happy this video u shared lab it !thanks
Drop melon on the store floor. Say "whoops." Grab a chunk of innards and taste. If yummy, grab the pieces, place in a plastic bag and pay for critter at the counter. If not yummy grab another melon and repeat procedure. Continue until good melon found.
Haha, done that once today, that's unintentional though!
Thank you! I highly appreciate this video. Very well done and I really liked how you used a dark opacity layer to have the image of the watermelon in the back ground! I can't wait to head to the store now to put your tips to use!!!
If you ate watermelons in 60's you would know what a watermelon taste like. Your lucky nowadays if you can even find a good one.
And to believe I have avoided the ripe one's for years thinking they were not going to taste sweet. Great tips!

Great video with good info about Watermelons
keep it up.
Great advice. Thank you. I also know an old timers trick: take a broom straw or a pine straw and lay the curve side down crossways on the watermelon the straw will move to longate itself to the degree that it is ripe. I believe it is drawn by the content of water or sweetness but either way this works every time. 😊👍❤️🎵
WOW! THANK YOU. NOW , I KNOW HOW TO FIND A GOOD WATERMELON . FINALLY!

I've always looked for a very yellow spot.and have never gone wrong its always super sweet.
I chose the one today
omg it's so perfect
Good tips. Here's one if you're picking it off the vine. Locate the stem (in this video called the 'tail), then follow the stem to the vine where it connects. Exactly opposite the stem is a tendril. When the melon is growing, this tendril wraps around things to support the vine, and when the melon is completely ripe and ready to pick, this tendril turns brown and dries out. If the tendril is still green, wait, and if it's brown, that watermelon is ripe.
Thanks for this info.

I always select the one with a creamy, deep yellow spot. If there is some webbing, that is a plus but it is mostly the spot that matters to me.

The yellow vs. cream colored spot you refer to is the ground spot, where the watermelon fruit was in contact with the soil. The yellow vs. cream color is due to a single gene (depends on the cultivar), and is not related to flavor or sweetness. Round vs. oval fruit shape is also due to a gene (depends on the cultivar), and is not related to flavor or sweetness. Fruit shape is not 'male or female'. All watermelon fruit come from female or hermaphroditic flowers (males provide pollen to cause fruit to develop).
wowww thank you 😘
Nice and important.
I love watermelon! 🍉 😀
love it, eat a lot during diet
watermelon be like, DID YOU JUST ASSUME MY GENDER?
thanx for the info,,😇👼👍👌👏
The best way is listening to the rhythm...How? pick up the selected watermelon with one hand , or an stable position like among the store box and simply hit on by the other hand's palm ..one , two ..three time and listen to the feed back voice..a good , sweet, red, juicy and fresh watermelon reflecting a very harmonized rhythm..it sits on two parts of your body ..on your heart and on your brain...they testify your choice...I grow up in a corner of Caspian sea , which producing the best watermelon in this world and always they using this style to verify and never wrong
thanks!!!!!
SUPER!
i liked it
Hmmm yum. All we get here in Sydney Australia are seedless round ones.
No more tiger skins or the like.
I'm 57yrs old and never knew how to pick the right watermelon. I always just took a chance and plucked it. Was not always successful😔... Thanks for the information. it was very useful for me ☺
Very good for me
nice tips
good very informative
Thank you... I love watermelon❣️ I'm glad to know I'm on the sweet & tasty side 😍
P.S. I do wonder if you can buy watermelon all year or if it's seasonal?
If it has a real fine gray/silvery "dust" on it. Kinda looks like condensation and can be rubbed of. If you hold one up and kind of peer over the surface you might see it. If I'm not sure I'll swipe my finger over the surface and see how much whipped off. The thicker that "dust" the better. Never fails. Works every time. An old picker told me that. They grow them in the fields next to my house some seasons
gr8 tips
cool info
My dad always laid a straw lengthwise on the melon, if it turned sideways, a very good and ripe melon!! Hard to find a broom straw now!!
These very same techniques can and should be used when selecting sweet women.
My grandfather taught me this when I was very young.
"Always thump before you hump" he would often say.
Thanks grandpa!
I love and miss you very much.

great video 👍👍🍉🍉🍉🍉
Wow I didn't know this interesting info. Now I can pick a delicious piece of fruit.
I think I have givien up on watermelons.. the last 4 I bought were just yuk. I'm pretty skilled on picking them too.
sweet at the beginning and bitter at the end
enlightening. but as for the tail I prefer the green tail with other characteristics as explained because in my country fruits are frequently picked when young for longer shelf life. So dried tail may tell you that it is already harvested for quite a long time i.e. has been on the shelf for quite some time.
good job
Do a video on how to pick cantaloupe please
I say....quite informative.
great info thank you! that thumping test wasn't sufficient, so hopefully this info will help!
right!
Maurice Gatdula ..neither was the piece of straw.

If you know how to "thump" properly, and what a good result sounds like, you need nothing else. But then, I learned how as a farm boy from the deep South.
actually, the thumping does work. you gotta find one that sounds "hollow" and not too heavy. it works for me 99% of the time.
