Was trying to find the way I learned from Chef in recent cooking class (since I forgot) and this method of trimming the watermelon was how they taught. Also seems the safest for not cutting oneself.
Well, I have a big knife, but not a big bowl, but you've put me on my way and made me laugh. I had to cut watermelons last week for a charity event and was woefully inadequate.
I put my cutting board in a cookie sheet on top of a non slip pad. Safer than cutting it in the sink and zero mess running down the counters, cabinets and floors! I do it for chickens and meats too. Throw them in the dishwasher and clean up is done! 💕🤌🏼
Sorry bud...if you had the longer (12'') knife and a larger cutting board... you can turn it into 1" cubes in under 3 minutes. You cut off the ends, peel it whole then cut it in half lengthwise... then lengthwise vertical slices with your hand on top... finish with bisecting cuts across the top and slide into you container. Repeat for other half.
This is what our daddy always taught us -- cut in wedges so everyone gets a bit of the heart. Nice to find a kindred spirit here! :-) I'm amazed that so many people don't seem to care about this and just cut into flat slices or spears. It's a great situation for the first person in the buffet line! (If he's smart enough to take the middle pieces.) :-)
you can if having a party to keep littleones from fingering it all since cut so section can use either metal reuable wash later type shewers or you can use like old cake testers that got the loop on end and get several of them to use pr if you got old corn on cob skewrs and also can use wooden or bamboo scewers to put on end each one and everyone can come pick thier on slice... here is another way to make it more like cubes afyer cutting the rind off befor cutting as you cut can cut water mellon horizontally for several layers then cut vertically as you did... then put the bowl over and flip it also you can have a cool fancy decorotive open top container or a speciall desiigned toothpick dispencer or those fancy coctail umbrellas and that way everyone can come get a toothpick and pick a square... if you want and feel adventous you can qget some olives and you can put a watermellon square and on the tip poke olive and then make your virgin coctail of your liking can also do same with pinapple and an olive too make sure all olives are sourced processed and from one area so you know they not been rebottled and mixed in other areas rancited olives...
This watermelon cutting method seems unconventional and complicated. I'm not convinced of its advantages, but I may try it because I am bored out of my mind staying at home during the Covid pandemic.
It’s actually really easy and fast. I just did another one at home and it took me less than a minute. This watermelon was a real beast to work with especially with a small knife.
Thanks for your efforts, but your internet scouring somehow missed all of the videos about cutting along the seed lines to remove them. They have phytic acid and are antinutrients, which means they take potential nutrients out of your body. A better workflow would be to follow these steps until you have 2 skinned halves, then to flip the watermelon half so the inside is up, then to follow some other videos showing how to properly cut and remove the seeds
I like this method although I take it a little farther. I cut those spears into smaller pieces, package in containers or ziplock bags for single or double servings, & freeze.
I honestly thought after shaving it around .. he was going to put it in the bowl there.. then start to slice it up with it in the bowl no juice or mess after that point cuz it all stays in the bowl.. hmm now I have to try it to see if it works that way..
If there is anything like ecoli from the farm on it and you slice through, it’ll spread it can spread it to the melon flesh. Highly unlikely but you never know how clean the outside really is or where it’s been.
I suppose his kitchen sink could be freshly clean but most kitchen sinks have more germs and bacteria in them than a toilet. I always wash my melons in a big bowl of cool vinegar water because vinegar sanitizes and it's safe for the environment and people. 35-40 pounds? LOL I bet that watermelon doesn't even weigh 10 pounds. LOL A narrow bladed knife is easier to maneuver. I do like the bowl idea, you could set that in a bigger bowl of ice to keep it cold.
If you think of this melon as a sphere with a diameter of 12 inches then the volume would be 3.9 gallons. Water weighs approximately 8 pounds per gallon. That is about 30 pounds. This melon isn’t a perfect sphere so it might be closer to 25 pounds.
It wouldn’t have taken many rubber bands in this one. It was literally ready to exploded after the knife hit it. Would have been one big mess but would have been fun😆
This is ridiculous. Cut it to the portion sizes and grab your spoon. Your way is taking way too long. Also a knife will always waste "meat". Use a spoon and get as much as you want. Far more efficient.
You’ve chosen the absolute worst way to cut a watermelon . 1: roll the melon hard against a table. Repeat and make sure you’ve pressed the melon all around. At some point you will feel the melon release inside. 2: Now cut a line around the middle. Just one line around the middle. 3: open the melon, and you will have a whole round melon without peel
Sometimes the Internet is great. Just tried this. It worked. Brilliant.
I like this way you cut the melon, thanks.
Good method, thank you. I’m definitely going to do that this summer.

Works well. We pretty use this method every time. Little waste and so easy to eat.

I used to cut watermelons this same way in a supermarket produce department. Works great every time.
You mean to tell me for forty years I’ve been cutting watermelon wrong ? Heh. Ain’t no way !

A monster 😂. I remember them being twice as long when we picked them out of the garden in the 60's and 70's.
Looks awesome. Going to get a watermelon now.. 👍
Did it work?
Sort of. Made a mess. Not as easy as he made it look. 😑

Nice! Going to try it!!!!
I always rinse off the outside of the watermelon (and other melons) before cutting them…

Just like he does here 0:16 🙌🍉
Woow beautiful and smartest way indeed, I love it
It really does work great.
Great idea!! Thanks!!! Gonna go try it now!! (Yay Cutco)!

Super easy. I don’t do it any other way now.

Me: Buys 6 watermelons and cut in half, serve with spoon.
But me as a cultured intellectual uses chopsticks. 😊
You need to cut through the center like pie pieces so every piece has a bit of the heart. Trimming the outside is good but cut is not equitable.

I like this method although I take it a little farther. I cut those spears into smaller pieces, package in containers or ziplock bags for single or double servings, & freeze.
wow! I never knew watermelon could be frozen! I LOVE it and could have watermelon all year even when out of season!
I had a watermelon recently that split in half as soon as my knife penetrated it. Best watermelon I ever had. Got lucky.
Bursting at the seams! Damn I love watermelon.
I cut it longways in half and then put half in the fridge and get a spoon and eat it right out of the melon. No one else eats it except me
I suggest using acookie sheet to contain the juice.

‘BEST’ and ‘EASIEST’?!
There’s a clip of a woman cutting a watermelon on Rachel Ray … THAT was a helluva lot easier!
the slurping sounds while eating really add to the video
😂
Yes- get rid of the "skin" by making watermelon rind pie, or pickles, or just candy- unless u have a donkey who would love it for a treat!!
This dude would have been fired at my old job! 😆 They had to peel 3 watermelons a minute! We went through about 8 pallets of watermelon a day!
It would be great for you to make a video and show us. Otherwise be gracious, say thank you and move on.
Where tf you work at Disney?
Lulz
This method is a little more complicated than it needs to be.
Seriously once you do it a couple of times it’s very fast and easy. I can do a whole thing in less than 60 seconds.
35-40lbs SHIIIIIIIITTTT. That'd be a world record. No chance it's more than 20
Didn’t weigh it but guarantee it was more than 20 lbs. 😂
cut it in half and eat it with a spoon. there.
When you flipped it over, I about had a coronary! Too messy.
I’ve seen easier and faster with less mess
Yea me too lol

Why would you wash your watermelon in a bacteria filled sink?
Maybe I disinfected the sink first...:)

Since when does watermelons have meat inside? Why he keep saying meat 🤦🏾♂️
Meat/flesh. It’s inside the skin so I think it makes sense.
