My fiance and I are planning to have a backyard wedding with a budget of 1500.00 to 2000.00. My husband and I use one credit card so we can keep track of what we're charging and spending each month. When you have multiple cards you tend to lose track of what you're spending as it's $200 here, $80 there, etc. We also pay off what we owe every month. If our payment is steep one month we realize we've spent too much and need to look at where that money went.
I don't wait until the end of the month. I have multiple cards, but I track them on an Excel spread sheet and pay them off as soon as something posts (generally 2 days later.) The most important aspect is to have a working system so you don't lose track. My husband and I do the monthly budget each month and the money that is not going to bills is in a category labeled "discretionary" on the Excel spread sheet. We have three bank accounts - checking (regular bills and food/toiletries), savings, and Discretionary. They are all at the same bank, so as soon as we are paid, I move money from the checking to savings and discretionary. On my Discretionary column on my Excel spreadsheet, I put the figure at the top and then as unexpected expenses come in (like the $40 I had to pay for an additional treatment at the dentist) or I purchase something, I subtract that from Discretionary. I also put all the monthly expenses at the top of Discretionary like birthday gifts, projected clothing purchases, postage, dry cleaning, restaurant, etc. - so that I have pre-planned to spend that money and don't spend it on something else. That way I can get the deals from my cards that offer cash back for certain purchases and sales and I never lose track. (I'm the family shopper - my husband is not interested in that.) It's all about planning and being financially organized!
What I liked about this episode is how the numbers breakdown seemed to really shock them into reality. It seems they were oblivious to how much they were spending. Hope they got it together

I lived in antique/thrift stores, crafted, obsessively researched and we pulled it off slowly over the course of a year. Absolutely no debt. A wedding, ONE DAY does not and should not put you into debt. Being budget friendly can be done. Its unnecessary. It shouldnt be about showing off how much you spent, its about sharing the day with your partner and your friends and family coming together to celebrate you.
I feel her pain. She will be ok and getting married....if u love each other , the "paperwork" can wait. Your on the road to happierness!!!! Its obvious you love each other.
When these shows were first aired, electronic banking was a relatively new thing. Debit and credit cards had been around for a while, but you had to do a lot more math to know your balances. I think that was a major adaptation in how money was managed and banks saw that and exploited it.
@ definitely. If you’re in the habit of managing your money already, then this isn’t a huge issue. Even then, it’s never been easier to part people from their money, and often times the pace of technology outstrips our capacity to adapt. Think of Apple Pay and how easy it is to purchase something. Tap has made debit and credit purchases even easier. You can part with money so easily now.
I know... and why would you want to? I have always lived within my means and now my means are betting better and better. What's the point of putting yourself underwater for 'stuff'? Also, buying everything at once means everything will need to be replaced around the same time. Much better to buy a dishwasher now and a washing machine in a few years. And NEVER two cars at once... OMG the massive depreciation on a new car!
Every time I watch one of these shows (which I just can't seem to stop) I am yelling at the screen "How did you NOT KNOW that you owed that much??? Do you not have a calculator?" Seriously. At least once every few months, sit down and add up what you OWN and what you OWE. That will change your perspective. Like he was thinking they own the house and the cars. Nope...
My gosh, you don’t have to spend a boatload of money to have a romantic wedding! Plus, I’ve noticed that many people who have a large wedding budget get freaked out when things don’t go perfectly. So not only do you go into debt for one day, you’re stressed as well. Does that make any sense?
I just put myself on a debt reduction-credit card gone in one year at $350/month, and $1,400 from savings. Boom-$4,300 gone, $163/month interest no more. Meanwhile, still putting $340/month into savings. My income just went down too.
I haven't had a credit card in over 20 years. I know how to be poor & living on minimum wage with a child. If everyone had to do this, they would appreciate living with a budget.
It was a long time ago when tech was more expensive. If they had family or friends in the US it was very expensive because that was considered international calls. Also they take the last 6 months of expenses and average them. If they each bought a $600 cell phone then the usage bill would only be $100 per month even though on average it would be $300. Its why its easy underestimate monthly expenses.
@@Zoot_of_Anthrax yeah I was in my early 20s back then. We had a family plan and I got in BIG trouble. I accidentally texted like $300worth. I’m not so sure about that method, seems like it could easily lead to an addictive cycle of spending and starving. Much better to adopt a steady but still serious approach, crash diet vs long term health plan.

Idk why couples think you need a 30k wedding. Why? Buying an expensive white dress you will only wear once, but expensive flowers that’s get dumped in the trash?!
Oh I liked this couple 😊
Most couples
Ones a complete jert
Gail is beautiful!
I can't even relate. The most I've been in debt was $20,000 and it took a long time to pay it off, but I did.
When these shows were first aired, electronic banking was a relatively new thing. Debit and credit cards had been around for a while, but you had to do a lot more math to know your balances.
I think that was a major adaptation in how money was managed and banks saw that and exploited it.
Just keep a checkbook register. Easy
$600 on home decor? Are they filming the right house??
Lol
Did anyone catch the $10 tip on a $28 tab? That's over 35%!
Aaaaaaand that's why they have over 100 thousand dollars in debt🤦🏻♀️ they just don't know the value of their own money.
Yup, and that’s alot for Canada tipping, usually closer to 15% back then
@@1588chrissy I calculate the taxes on a meal and that is a tip.
We always tip good. But we’re debt free though.
There are bars out there that charge you separate for the ice.
This was really good for them!
Face your fears!
$127,000 income, no children, don't pay their taxes, and spend $14,000 per month? This couple can't be helped.
I watch these to remind me to pay my bills on time and not spend more than I can afford.
I know... and why would you want to? I have always lived within my means and now my means are betting better and better. What's the point of putting yourself underwater for 'stuff'? Also, buying everything at once means everything will need to be replaced around the same time. Much better to buy a dishwasher now and a washing machine in a few years. And NEVER two cars at once... OMG the massive depreciation on a new car!
Me too. I listen to it and go yikes, let’s avoid that like the plague
That's excellent accountability!
Your future self will thank you 😁
Omg for real!
Me too
Every time I watch one of these shows (which I just can't seem to stop) I am yelling at the screen "How did you NOT KNOW that you owed that much??? Do you not have a calculator?" Seriously. At least once every few months, sit down and add up what you OWN and what you OWE. That will change your perspective. Like he was thinking they own the house and the cars. Nope...
I hope they do cancel the wedding and just go to the courthouse
You can get married at City Hall. If you really want to be married.
My gosh, you don’t have to spend a boatload of money to have a romantic wedding! Plus, I’ve noticed that many people who have a large wedding budget get freaked out when things don’t go perfectly. So not only do you go into debt for one day, you’re stressed as well. Does that make any sense?
And, those expensive weddings are usually the one’s that crash and burn very quickly!
My heart went out to Carolyn. I’m feeling this was a hard lesson learned. 🙏🏼
I just put myself on a debt reduction-credit card gone in one year at $350/month, and $1,400 from savings. Boom-$4,300 gone, $163/month interest no more. Meanwhile, still putting $340/month into savings. My income just went down too.
Good job!
$600 a month on dog expenses blows me away. Could that possibly be true?
Maybe they buy him drugs 😂
I love Gail!
I would like to know how much their mortgage is and how much the utility bills are as far as their electricity
I haven't had a credit card in over 20 years. I know how to be poor & living on minimum wage with a child. If everyone had to do this, they would appreciate living with a budget.
What about a debit card? Are you paying for everything in cash?
@@musicman76enator I have a debit card from a bank, which is where I keep my cash.
Pay it off every month
You can carry well over 2-3G interest free
Especially if you have the disposable income
How do only 2 people have a cell phone bill that’s over 300 dollars 💵 ?
This show is over 15yrs ago. Data and txt use i imagine, that was back when you would have pay per plans
It stunk because by the time she got the bill we were already almost half way through the next billing cycle. 😬 that was back when you either paid per text or got a plan with like 200, 500, or like 1500 texts per month. Lol fun times.
As the replies have said, the tech was more pricey back in the 2005-2010ish era and not to mention, in Canada we don't have as much competition for lower cell rates like the USA does.
@@JK-tq4qf we have huge monopolies for everything in Canada. We are not smart people. We need to take cues from our neighbors to the south, life is a lot cheaper in the U.S.
We got married at a young age of 21 and what we did is have a court wedding and very simple celebration at a restaurant. I have $50 white cocktail dress. Then my husband proposed again with a Church wedding 6 years after(we are very religious Catholic family background). We were able to save up for that wedding and no debt.
These were some strong 30s back then.
Years behind on taxes....yikes. Are'nt you scared of being homeless???
My mom wasted so much money on my wedding. I’m divorced now. Weddings are a waste of money, so I hope these two just went to the courthouse.
Or a church with a minister. Also inexpensive
Great job🎉🎉
If I were her, I would stop wasting money on junk and spend it somewhere else
Dave Ramsey would say, sell the cars, sell rhe toys, sell the TV, sell everything that doesn't run away first. Rice and beans, get second jobs.
Yes! And it will be paid off in a year or less.
I’m not so sure about that method, seems like it could easily lead to an addictive cycle of spending and starving. Much better to adopt a steady but still serious approach, crash diet vs long term health plan.
@@Sarah-eh7bw I agree. Once a person is off the rice and beans diet/payment plan lifestyle , a person could over broad and start spending way too much. And the cycle continues. Slow and steady runs the race and (hopefully) pays the bills.
Has does that work when you don’t own the items you sell? Your underwater on the cars, the minute you transfer/sell them, the bill for the whole amount comes due! Slow and steady does win the race.
@@joycef8443 it doesn't matter, Ramsey gives the same advice to everyone. Sell everything, buy a used $5k car, work yourself to the bone, eat ramen and drink tap water
Says he wants to be a rockstar but they show him on the keyboard 😂
I played for 7yrs straight full time. It was a full on addiction to me. Everytime I've gone back for a few months it feels like I'm a slave and suffocating. It's unbearable. I just can't do it anymore. I want a life outside the game and to follow my dreams.
Gail with the Guitar Hero guitar 😂
When I see The Repo Man Comes in The Thumbnail it reminds me of Flowers In The Attic" The Origin where Corrine Dollanganger has to see the loss of The Kitchen Table Set and the Oven so she can't feed her children properly. In The Book Flowrers In The Attic, Corrine sits at The Desk where she sees The Bankbook that has next to nothing and a Mountain of Bills that have Envelopes that say "Overdue Payment" or "Immediate Payment".
I remember that too!! Scary book 😅
@@legzfalloffgirl5148Yes. I was 15 when I first heard about this book in 1981 I told my Friend she was crazy when she told me the plot. She had the Gray Paperback Edition that could be worth a Mint on Ebay. I'll say one thing, VC Andrews took folks (like myself) who weren't into horror fiction into die hard fans. I learned another lesson, finances don't discriminate and even before they got married if they weren't on the same page Christopher & Corrine would eventually have a downfall.
I didn't think much of Tambourine Players but after seeing Standing In The Shadows Of Motown, Jack Ashford who played on alot of motown songs, and banged it like it owed him money. Sadly alot of them came out of their celebrity with nothing.
For our wedding, my Gramps paid for thr invitations (we needed a CC and didnt have 1- we HAD the cash in hand but he WOULD NOT allow us to pay him for them!) My hisbands Aunt made wedding cakes for a living, our wedding present= FREE!!!!!! I did the flowers, the decorations AND the food (and final exams the week before the wedding!) We paid EVERYTHING else!!!! We helped our friends/family clean the church after the 1st reception. The sexind was at the bar: his best man moved the food from church to bar(groomsmen helped!) My husband went clear theur school w the owners of 1 of the busiest bars in our town. For the reception there, they sold us a Keg (at cost) and 1 bottle of liquor free (Im not a beer girl) all told, we worked HARD for our wedding and were in 3,000 TOTAL!!!!@ The ONLY regret I have is: we skipped a professional photographer!!!!! We have 3 pics and a video! But our memories are priceless
You can tell how old this is just by the price of that tv
That TV is worth 10 times more today. The Inflation crisis is going to make it even higher.
Can he really play those key boards or do he have them for fun
That spread sheet of debt gave me anxiety. 😮
Not even married and collected debt together ..talk about starting off bad. Just don't get knocked up.
That guy's a software designer and only makes 52 grand a year? I'm a janitor and make that much money.
This was over a decade ago.
This is 20 years ago
3:55 Gail is hilarious
The beds look same to me.
The fact that the dog don't make no income is absolutely absurd....😂😂
One thing you never want to do is neglect taxes- it causes so much stress and unnecessary heartache! Open a business and write off your musical instruments!
I have a client whose partner hasn't filed taxes in 15 years and this client "accidentally" opened up an envelope to also discover $35000 in arrears for child support, yet only contributes $500 a month to household expenses and eats about $300 worth of groceries. I told this client "you cannot blame your partner for sucking the life out of you if you keep handing them the straw"
Got rid of my cell and stoped paying for my daughter's. Saved a lot.
She’s 32? Dayum. I’d have guessed closer to 45 😳
Yep. She looks older than the guy.
@@planetag310 She looks like she could be his mom!
What’s your point in saying this?
Her hair style and the clothes are doughty
@@kamjo79 Just trying to get your goat. I win.
I am really surprised that a lot of people don’t count their money they just give it away without thinking
I know this is a old episode, but how do they get refunds on their taxes the most I’ve ever ever gotten even when I was single working low way retail was like 300 bucks back
My wedding was about $3,000 all in for about 100 people. It would have been cheaper, but we wanted to tip everyone that volunteered their time.
"Its not like we're stupid people" durrf durr quack quack says the duck
Smart people do not have crazy debt
Um wut... math was my worst subject in school but I am 35 yrs old. No auto debt. Home paid off in cash. Live on less than $14,000 per year. Just budget. Its not difficult. Its simple math & knowing needs versus wants.
They are the biggest silly people on this show I have ever seen, omfg
3:54 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I remember the ad's on tv credit costs you so think twice or pay the price
Got married at 8a.m. handful of pepole in attendance pankaes and mimosas after! It was simple and perfect!
The dog brings in $0.00/year? Freeloader!
Reminds me of a colleague who with her husband took in >$200,000 a year, and periodically had their hydro cut for nonpayment... meanwhile I was single, house poor (i.e. bought an old, modest house I could just barely afford) and never missed a payment of any kind...
Step 1: Sell the truck and new car and buy 2 cheap cars with cash.
That only works if they can sell them for at least the amount they owe otherwise it makes more sense to stick it out. That's why impulse buying a car isn't recommended.
Idk why couples think you need a 30k wedding. Why? Buying an expensive white dress you will only wear once, but expensive flowers that’s get dumped in the trash?! The point of being married is to get married because you love that person. Get a cheap $100 white dress you can resell after the event. Go to a event hall and dont spend more than 2k. Why impress people?! They don’t care.
I am just trying to figure out why someone wouldn't pay taxes for 4 years...
Good job planning to pay off debt❤
I wonder how many of these couples stay together or stay on course to get out of debt. I saw my parents climb back out of debt over a decade and it was rough.
He is so immature ! They have nothing to show for it. They own nothing. It's a good thing they chose to get this figured out before the marriage. Money brings out the real person.
My friend's daughter has the right idea. She told her mom she doesn't want a wedding. She would rather put the money towards a down payment on a house which they did. They can get married at a courthouse.
52k as a software engineer
He's getting kicked in the balls all the time! That's terrible
If you do not have the deed, the bank can foreclose your house & take it
Oh dear, he thought he owned the house 😬
Yup!
They rent from the bank.
Then after you actually own the house? You will rent the property from the government.
