How to Degree 4.6 and 5.4 SOHC Ford Mustang V8 Camshafts

- This video is how to degree Comp 262 cams in a SOHC 4.6 V8 but it will be similar for 5.4 V8. I prefer to get within .5 degree of the recommended centerline.
-Trick Flow cam degree kit: TFS-90000-16
-Trick Flow Steel base and solid lifter: TFS-90100
-Comp Cams crankshaft socket: 4793
Tips:
-Make sure your dial indicator is zeroed out before each reading.
-Readings should be repeatable.
-Take your time and don't get frustrated taking parts on and off

When I have a balancer with no marks I just put a piston stop in, put a piece of tape on balancer go clockwise till it hits, make a mark and then go counter clockwise until it hits again, make a mark and the distance directly between the two is your tdc. No math needed lol

Awesome looking to find a donor crown vic. Or f150 4.6 2v to remove the 302 and swap it out can I use a PI engine and install none PI pistons to increase compression looking to get a bit more HP and better MPG
I have a 1996 f150 with a 302 after adding larger tires it feels underpowered
My biggest hiccup is seeing how the adjustable crank or cam gears apply to this. I see the idea is to find the centerline and you use the adjustable gears to either retard or advance timing to help get to the correct centerline, but the how is where i get lost. For example if centerline is off do i really have to pull the chains off and move the crank gear over a tooth or two then put everything back on? thats the process im stuck at
Moving the chain is worth about 4 degrees I believe. However, if you have adjustable gears you can dial it in by using the adjustment available. If you do not have the adjustable ones you can grind the keyway in the cam gear to be able to move the gear around.

The ones that work with aftermarket cams is the 12mm one ARP PN: 256-1001

Alright I'm confused...so how do you know how far to adjust the piston stop? I mean what if the piston isn't at TDC because the piston stop is screwed in too far? how to do you know exactly?
The piston stop doesn't stop the piston at TDC. It stops it before TDC as a reference. Then piston is pulled back down and then around to TDC again on the other side. The split the difference between the two and it gives you TDC.
You guess and set wheel at say 6 degrees then spin crank around and if it stops at say 10 degrees
Thats 4 degrees difference and so half that is 2 degrees so set wheel at 8 degrees and see if it hits piston stop at 8 degrees when crank is turned either direction.
Goal is to find TDC
Is this necessary if using factory cams?
No, just align the factory timing marks.

Are these Comp Cams the 102500's?
Yes, and they are great cams. Needed very little tuning after installation and make a great power curve.
