When someone says ‘can you make me one?’ I’m always really honest and say ‘no sorry, I don’t get much time to sew- I’m selfish and only make for myself 😂’ Have a nice holiday 🎉
So many great tips! I would add to wash and dry your fabric, how you would launder the garment after it's made. I would also suggest if you are just starting to sew, don't buy expensive fabric. And even if you are an experienced sewist, it's fun to learn something new, or even a different way to do something. Getting or more important, giving a compliment can make a difference in a person's day. While I'm not great at talking to people i don't know, i will often compliment someone, maybe its a colour or a style they are wearing. This is so out of my comfort zone, but if someone is wearing something I would like to make for my self I will ask permission to take a picture. Amazingly no one has ever said no. As I'm getting older I'm finding it very important to not sit for hours sewing. Take a few minutes to stand up, stretch, move around, get a drink. Even standing at your ironing board is good for you.
Such wise words, Alison. Thank you. My tip would be the grain line on pattern pieces is really important especially if you're using denim to make jeans. Cut out on a single layer and measure from the selvedge to align your grain line. That way you'll avoid the dreaded twisted leg! Even RTW jeans sometimes have the twisted leg!
Many thanks Alison, such a lovely presentation, it clearly came from the heart. Bon Vacances !!!! I lived in France for several years and bought lots of bargain fabrics from the village Brocantes. Hope you get to visit some .😍
Totally agree with you. TH-cam have fantastic, beautiful sewing communities. I’m new to sewing and as an introvert, learning and listening to how everyone is going and seeing what they’re sewing is good therapy for me. Sending best wishes from Down Under 🥰💐🇦🇺
Great vlog Alison 😄 I have learned so much from using TH-cam and always search for sew alongs if I’m making something more involved. Like you I’m a visual learner and I usually come across something I don’t understand in the written instructions. I had a lady tap me on the shoulder as she was getting off the bus last week, to tell me she loved my blouse. I was absolutely buzzing! 😂 Enjoy the rest of your holiday 💞💞
All very good tips! I learned sometimes a quick muslin, maybe just of the bodice using an old sheet, for example, can save a lot of heartache! I love the fabric you are wearing, and hope you have a lovely holiday!
Thanks Alison great tips! Your words of wisdom struck a chord with me as only today as I got asked to make curtains for someone. I’ve never done anything like curtains so I politely declined but have felt awful since for saying no. Thank you for making me feel better. ❤
Great tips ..Thankyou .. could you talk about using finished garment measurements and grading some time. I have very different body shape then you and need to adjust patterns but not sure how. Love your chatty style. Enjoy that holiday.
I really wish I realised that not all patterns will fit every body straight out of the packet Also, a lot of online fabric stores will sell you samples Great video and tips!
I don't tell people I made it, as that is usually followed up at a later date with 'oh you sew, can you take up these trousers for me?' If they don't know they don't ask 😂
