Looks great Mike and for sure it was a good challenge. It can be very creepy turning something big and out of round. Years ago in the begining of my career as a wood patternmaker I was given a job that involved turning a 6 foot diameter that ended up 3 feet deep. That is a very creepy feeling but I loved it and always looked forward to turning big things. The largest ended up to be almost 8 foot in diameter. They were round but still done with hand tools and a floor rest. About the same feeling as an 18 inch diameter that is now where near round like you just turned. Great job! Gary
Thanks so much Gary, and wow, that sounds incredible!!! I have no history of woodwork of any kind apart from the office project here and there. My wife bought me a small lathe 3 1/2 years ago and it sort of escalated from there. Take care and I look forward to your next project 😊

Another lovely piece, Mike. Even though I’m never getting a lathe, I enjoy learning about this work. I didn’t know how to sharpen blades. I didn’t know you had to realign the two parts, I didn’t know about end grain, and burls. I’m loving this. I don’t imagine I’ll use this knowledge, but I have a much greater appreciation, now, for turned pieces. You’re a good teacher. I never knew cherry was so light. My favorite of all woods. Lovely Cherry. I'm so lucky to have it growing behind my house. Quite a few have lost parts or succumbed to pestilence over the years, and I'm always ready to gather more for the shop. My trees are what people normally call Black Cherry.
