Try what Antscanada did with the Dracula ants and use Red Plastic Film to filter out all the bright light and make it seem dark to her with you still being able to see!
It's interesting, as you said you were going to cover the sides so she would be comfortable in darkness, but it seems like maybe if she wanted that she would have been digging away from the lights and more central/away from the edge of the glass, no?

I was fortunate enough that my family didn’t really care about having spiders in the house, however you could try convincing them to let you have a sling and because they’re so tiny they might not care. Or just get a sling and don’t tell them till it gets large enough that they notice it and then you can tell them you’ve already had it for 2years or so and that they never knew in the first place

They can actually dig significantly deeper than that. I might be wrong, but I recall reading somewhere that some African species were found to have dug burrows that were about 2 meters deep.

This was fascinating! Very few keepers have the materials and expertise to build such a deep terrarium and document the fossorial behavior. All this was done in a few weeks and the spider is not fully grown, so I wonder how the tunnel will evolve as the spider matures. I look forward to a sequel. That had to be the unluckiest roach in the colony - either that, or this spider has mental domination superpowers.
I’ve heard that Hysterocrates (and probably Pelinobius as they’re very closely related) in the wild have 10-15ft (3-4.5 meters) deep burrows, something that is just unachievable in captivity. I really like P. Muticus getting a spotlight here, a super underappreciated species!! I love that reddish coloration and smooth texture
Hi mate, I've seen a good few attach the board to the outside of their enclosure with Velcro, this makes it secure but still removable so your still be able to take it off and see what your tarantula is up to 😊

I used velcro tape to stick to the side of one of my terrariums, it's like tape, and you can put the scratchy side on the glass and the fluffy side on the plastic and then attach it like that. I also think you can get self-adhesive magnet strips, which might be nicer and quieter to check on her Love this video !
I suggested magnetic tape too. I would suggest Velcro but I think it would work too well? Idk my head has it being a bit of a fuss to remove each time as the Velcro clings to itself for dear life. You would know, having experience, if that's true or if I'm just dumb XD

That was awesome to watch. Do you think it might be a good idea to moisten the lower layers of the substrate? It's hard to tell from the video but, it all appears to be the same amount of dryness & aside from a structure standpoint, don't they dig deep like that to reach moisture areas? Just a thought. Love how the enclosure turned out & how much she seems to be enjoying all of that digging room. She probably feels really safe. Also, water dish! 😁🖤🕷🖤🤗
Here in Australia we have Tarantulas that burrow metres deep in order to reach appropriate temperature and moisture levels. Ts that do this are mostly ones found in arid areas, however care in captivity is essentially the same across all Aussie Ts as they are aiming for the same temp/humidity, they just have different methods to reach it. So yeah it would need moisture, and the issue with using peat/coir is that it does dry out quickly and doesn’t hold structurally sound burrows, that’s why you can properly keep trapdoors on peat.
When you mist the substrate, the moisture falls down through the substrate. The one I used is not fully dry and it currently got moisture. She did secure the tunnels with webbing though, so even a fully dry substrate shouldn't collapse!
This experiment was so fascinating to watch. I'm really glad she made her tunnel where we can all see and marvel at her ability to dig and move substrate. Thank you for all the diligence doing the time-lapse it was very educational.

Wow definitely one of my favourite videos so far, this was absolutely incredible! Copious amount of time and dedication were poured into it, both by you AND the tarantula! Definitely needs some plants at the top now to make it lush and vibrant, even though the star of the enclousure is her amazing tunnel! Plus you don't have to worry about the plants getting burrowed in excess substrate! This tarantula is definitely deserving of many fat yummy juicy roaches!

I have a feeling this is going to be a big learning experience/experiment for you and all of us. To watch the differences there are with having such a deep hole compared to relatively close to the surface. Because all the way down there how does she know whats on the surface and her webbing how it will look all the way to the surface so she can feel what is up there and know if its prey or not. I'm so excited and interested for this.... Great idea Petko
Actually the sensitivity of silk is amazing any slight vibration and they can feel it all the way down (think of trapdoor spiders yes sometimes they chill at the front but not all species do that). I don't think she has gotten a chance to web her burrow she just did the basic maintenance now she needs to add the webbing to her tunnel which I guarantee she will do as it adds stability.
Getting an egg sac from down there will be a real challenge ("if" you breed with her). Still a great video to watch. Amazing burrow with an happy dance at the end.

Honestly it's amazing how most people tend to ignore fossoreal tarantulas figuring they will be boring and you will hardly ever see them, but then as soon as you start paying attention to them you realize that they can actually be pretty interesting.

My Pelinobius muticus started 3 holes, as well. Over a few weeks, she connected them and now has several entrances - or more appropriately, exits. Great concept for a video!
Fascinating to see that fossorial tarantulas appear to dig in a spiral manner if given the space to do so. I wonder if it's because of the horizontal space constraints or simply how they do it in the wild as well. Thank you for this video, it was fun to watch as well as quite enlightening.
This was an awesome video! So so interesting. First off the technique of webbing a little bit of dirt making it easier to carry out was so cool to see. I was never sure exactly how this process was accomplished. And another interesting thing to me was the backfilling of the tunnel. I mean it makes sense but it’s not very well recognized when there is not a lot of substrate in an enclosure. At least compared to this! 😆

Awesome video! Tarantulas often build a second chamber for when rain floods their burrow. The main chamber at the bottom will be the first to fill with water, and she can retreat to the upper chamber. It looks like the dirt that was used was maybe too dry or lose. In the first time laps it seems like the burrow is not holing shape for her very well. Maybe a more densely packed or moist substrate would speed up the progress.
some months ago you said you were tired of the usual videos and wanted to produce less but more "daring", "new", "interesting", "experimenting" ones. You're keeping the promise vid after vid, Petko, love from Trieste
To add the covers you can either glue some metal corners to the glass and add the magnets to keep the sheets in place. Alternatively, you can also 3d print some corner parts with a small gap/sleeves, which you can glue to the corners and then you can slide the plastic sheets between the gaps.

I would actually advise next time before moving a tarantula to a new enclosure to do so after you fed her well and got her abdomen a bit plump, especially if its an arboreal or borrowing species, the main reason is that they use a lot of energy to make new webs and being a bit full makes this job a lot safer and easier for them. just something i learned from experience over the time. also awesome terrarium, such a cool idea

@The Dark Den, just buy a new long-sheet or similar. Then create a 'dice fold' for your enclosure. Remove the top and bottom portion, and make both ends, a tad longer. So you can just slot one piece of paper into the other. To create a 'latch'. A bit like Cereal packages etc.
This little one had the best little tarantula booty dance when she (or he) got that roach. It always makes me smile to see their "Yay! I got food" happy dance. Looking forward to an update on the amazing tunnel she dug. Will she web the entire tunnel or maybe just the entrance?
You can get some magnetic tape for the panels. They're not paper thin but is still better than nothing at least. Super cool video! You should get a Lazy Susan (turn table) to put the terrarium on so you can move/spin it around super easy and smoothly! Final suggestion: maybe some frost film over most of the dirt areas to reduce reflection! If you use film, you can remove "chunks" with a razor as the tarantula digs more to keep her tunnel exposed. Would love to see an update video in a few months to see if anything has changed!

I have a few shallow diggers and they go 10 inches to 2 feet.
My deep diggers 3 feet to 7 feet.
My deepest tank is 8 feet and 3 feet wide.
Use a CPL filter on your lens to get rid of reflections...

I was thinking the same thing! It looked like it could collapse quite easily, even with webbing.

You can get some magnetic tape for the panels. They're not paper thin but is still better than nothing at least.
Super cool video! You should get a Lazy Susan (turn table) to put the terrarium on so you can move/spin it around super easy and smoothly!
Final suggestion: maybe some frost film over most of the dirt areas to reduce reflection! If you use film, you can remove "chunks" with a razor as the tarantula digs more to keep her tunnel exposed.
