Cutting down a Cuetec Cynergy shaft to make it shorter

- The customer wanted me to make his Cynergy shaft about 1.5 inches smaller and he also wanted a longer ferrule. At first I questioned him on why he would want this done. It would give him less reach on the table and destroy the re-sell value. But in the end its his cue and if this will make him play better who am I to stop him from having his Ideal cue.

Where did you get the attachment for shaping the radius on the tip? What is the geometry of the tool on the tool holder? Plans available?

When testing for runout with an indicator, the plunger should be set at 90 degrees to the axis of rotation.
What glue did you use on ferrule and tip?
Man I wish u were closer, I have a predator sport shorty 52” inch cue for my home table which has a short wall on one side. Even at 52”, it’s about 3 inches too long when on the rail for a cross shot. 3 inches off its shaft would be perfect
Your attachment to hold your Dremel tool, can you use a cutter with that to reduce the diameter of a shaft? Is the Dremel tool strong enough? Thank you
I use a router attachment to turn down maple shafts
You put a clear ferrule on my cuetec fiberglass shaft which i love. And i bought a cynergy shaft. I got a super small chip in the cynergy ferrule. Nothing crazy but soon ill be stopping by for repair

I’m surprised that it was hollow. A lot is made of the foam fillings and such like by cf cue manufacturers, interesting to see it like that. The need to be so careful with the vault plate is what puts me off buying one
Just for low deflection... The less stuff in the tip section, the less deflection it will have, so a lot are completely hollow.
The AVID shaft is hollow as well. Lighter for low deflection...
It's just a shaft dude. It's a semi solid stick attached to another stick, to hit a ball. The only thing that should put you off buying one is the price, or just personal preference. I love a good wood shaft. But over the years they warp because we don't all live in the perfect enviornment for wood, and the "lifetime warranty" is never honored because they'll just claim you don't take care of it. That's why i made the switch to CF. It doesn't warp. And the price of a wood shaft these days is on par with Carbon Fiber so playing with my preferred shaft doesn't economically make sense anymore. I had a viking with the vikore shaft. I loved that shaft. But the shaft itself cost as much as the cue. So i gave it to my bar as a house cue for the team. Now i have a cheap $150 butt with a cynergy, and a $200 random CF shaft i found from a start up vietnamese company. Being Vietnamese i thought i would give it a try. And I'm very impressed. The tip is still questionable as i haven't played much with it but construction is on par with the cynergy. The only thing i don't like is the it's not wood sound and feel.

What lathe do you use
what did you put on the shaft when cleaning it?
I cleaned it with rubbing alcohol and put McDermott shaft conditioner
If the shaft is hollow, why would you need to put epoxy on the bottom of the ferrule? Shouldn't the sides be enough? Won't it just drip and pool inside the shaft?
I let the epoxy cure with the cue right side up with the tip facing down. My thought process is that it will fill in any gaps as it cures. I get what you are saying though.

Hi, there is no abs or juma available in my area. What material would be an alternative? can I use engineering plastic? hdpe rod, or maybe bakelite ?

Rubbing alcohol
Isopropyl alcohol. Rubbing alcohol contains oils.

What kind of lathe do you use?
I use Cue Smith lathes and a generic bench top metal lathe with a rear chuck I got from China.
To start, is just a metal lathe fine and that's it?
Why? It's one thing to make a shorty or jump cue but why cut an inch or two?

Isn’t carbon fiber’s dust dangerous if breathen in?
Not sure if this guy is wearing a mask or not but, carbon fiber dust can be hazardous if you're breathing it in regularly and the dust is nowhere as harmful as asbestos. On my lathe I have a p100 mask I wear for cutting anyting, G10, phenolic, carbon fiber, etc.
I've heard that it is. I always wear a mask when cutting it. I also have a vacuum to remove some of the particulates at the source.

Is it recommended to use a carbon shaft instead of wood?
Doesn't warp like Wood but Wood has some great stuff...
Surprised that it's hollow.. No foam or any kind of filler inside.
Hollow at the tip end to reduce end weight thus reducing deflection. "Usually" it's filled from the joint about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way to the tip with the very end being hollow except for the ferrule vault plate or what have you.
You DO NOT EVER POLISH CARBON SHAFTS! It makes them sticky. Grippy! They need to be sanded with 1200 grit sandpaper to reproduce the factory matt finish. Just a friendly tip. Nice job on the rest.
It's not a polish I used. It's McDermott ultra glide. It's very slippery 😆

Maybe home table or favorite pub/bar table has a wall a few inches too close?

@@cuesandcodeyes, I have a 4 jaw independent chuck for the mini lathe. That allows me to get the runout under 2 thousands.
