I've heard there are five or six fighting forces in Syria, including ISIS (yes, ISIS still exists) and al-Qaeda and Kurds. I believe none of these factions like each other, but may have joined forces purely to overcome Assad's army. If they ever do manage to drive Assad out of the majority of Syria, are they going to battle it out to see who gains overall control?

They're the most secular, advanced, and "stable" group if given the chance to govern themselves and live in peace. Iran also has a good chance to become a thriving country, if the Persian Iranians could get rid of the Ayatollahs who are holding the country hostage. And Palestinians as well as the Lebanese could also live in peace if liberated from the fundamentalist crowd that is using and sacrificing them for their own interests. An objective opinion not based on race and ethnicity - I only judge by inner qualities, no matter who you are and where you come from. "You know the story about the boy and the Zen master?". This is the line from "Charlie Wilson's War" that keeps coming back to mind when I think of what's happening in Syria right now.
Another good interview, Caolan. I agree with Paul that this is not a religious war. It was originally about a Russian naval base. The situation was complicated by the Arab Spring, followed by the Islamic State (whose origins are more complex than many people think). But the underlying problem was the British and French drawing arbitrary lines on a map of the Middle East in 1916 which has led to constant conflict ever since and of course the Balfour Declaration which various people had different interpretations. Lord Balfour believed in a homeland for the Jews, based on his background as a Canadian in which you had homelands for the Indians. Sorry to say this but the British and French lay the foundations for the mess in the Middle East today.
The Balfour Declaration "was" supposed to give everyone equal right. Obviously it hasn't. The French and British divided up the middle east so nobody was within their original territory. Both directly contributed to the mess, then the American recognition of Israel all under military guard made it worse. How all of this works out, nobody really knows.
