    Safety tip: ground the barrel, since static charges can accumulate on the plastic of the barrel and then you reduce possibility of unwanted combustion. Also, I prefer to use the term methane instead of biogas. Great build!

      The gas is more than just methane as it is impure grounding the barrel can make it act as a capacitor with some types of plastic

    I like that the size of this thing is quite small. With a few modifications to the design it would fit under the floor of a motor-home so that you can live in the motor-home, flush the toilet, dispose of organic food waste, and even add extra waste from the environment such as leaves to get a constant gas supply for cooking and heating or even to run a generator. The fertilizer and broken-down solids waste it produces can be extracted and used for growing food or sold to farmers or just keen gardeners who want high quality nutrient rich fertilizer and fresh soil for their garden.

    Thanks for the effort. While the list is presumably accurate, the photo shot is too far from what is being done. Which parts are going onto the unit and in which order for production? What is being mixed with the cow dung? Is it water? Too quiet almost shy. What is being grated on the spiral grinder and why?

    Hi Valentina, I just saw your moovie. Its very instructive. I am going to bild the similar one. One thing which I dont understand is why the feeding pipe is such long, If am not mistaken it almost reach the bottom of barel. Would it not be a problem to feed the substrate afterwards ? Thank you very much. Greetings from Poland. Tomasz

      hello! you want the new 'food' to mix a little with the old, and not to have it laying on the top. because you are not opening the barrel to stir it, the long tube, kind of does this..

  • @ktcadd
    @ktcadd 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Valentina, How does the gas fill the tire tube with pressure? You must have a one-way check valve somewhere? Maybe between the top of tank and the tube?

    Hello Valentina, this is fascinating! When your gas goes into the tyre tube what kind of pressure do you get and how long could you cook for using the gas in the tube. So the tyre tube is the permanent storage facility with a tap off to the stove/cooker? How long do you keep adding to the digester before having to empty it or drain some of the waste out? I am going to try and replicate your design and see how it works. Danke schon!

    • @valkarga
      @valkarga  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rob. Great that you want to try out the design! If you are in Berlin, you can have this one, as I m not using it at the moment. Yes, the tyre is the gas storage. About emptying some out, It really depends. It will take you one month for gas to start producing after you fill it up once at the beginning with cow manure. Then, i would wait one more month so that the pathogens are killed. after that, you can start emptying some of the digested manure from the bottom and start adding bio-waste from the top, regularly, every week. Good luck!

    • @robfowler4499
      @robfowler4499 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Valentina! Thanks for the kind offer but I live in Johannesburg. Had I known about you I would have visited when I was in Berlin in July. Did your digester really create enough methane that was really usable? I want to build an off-grid house near Kruger National Park. I see that you are also into rocket stoves which will also be one of my next projects. It is all so very fascinating - and fun. Hopefully if I get something working you can come visit. You have a year start

    • @valkarga
      @valkarga  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rob Fowler Hi Rob, to be honest, I never really managed to produce usable gas so far. I had done the experiment end of August and just right when the gas started producing it got already cold in Berlin in September and the process froze. I know somebody with a similar system and he said he is able to cook with it once a week. so, it does not produce as much in this scale. However, i think its a good scale to start experimenting before you go to something bigger.

    Methane Gas Spontaneously Combusts with a 70 / 30 air to gas mixture so how do yo prevent explosion at start up? And when you feed it ??

    • @cannphotography4139
      @cannphotography4139 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I've been researching biogas for some time now and have never heard of methane spontaneously combusting at any gas:air mixture except in a compressed gas situation. (A paper entitled 'Spontaneous Ignition of Pressurized Releases of Hydrogen and Natural Gas into Air' published by Frederick L. Dryer, Marcos Chaos, Zhenwei Zhao, Jeffrey N. Stein, Jeffrey Y. Alpert, and Christopher J. Homer - Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Princeton University)
      Swamp gasses (or marsh gasses) have been known to combust, however that gas is a combination of methane, hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide. The theory for their combustion is that some swamp microorganisms may release diphosphane, which ignites at room temperature, and when it reaches the surface it ignites the swamp gas.
      Since I'm planning a methane digester, I would be very interested in learning about the possibility of spontaneous combustion. If you happen to have any links that you could share with information, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

    • @valkarga
      @valkarga  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, no unfortunately I didn't go that deep into theory. In this case, the methane gas is being compressed by putting it on a car tire and adding some weight on top, when you burn it.. But this is practical. Please upload a video if you built a methane digester!

    • @valkarga
      @valkarga  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. The glass jar is a kind of a protection. In case that the flame goes back into the tube, then it will be extinguished in the water..

  • @uday20101
    @uday20101 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Will be able to compress the gas using a compressor to a cylinder for later use?

    • @UKsystems
      @UKsystems หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      However the explosion rated compresses are very expensive and the gas does not compress the best. It would probably be worth buying a large gas bladder or bag which will do the same as the tube but could be the size of a mattress.

    Hey nice video! I live in Berlin too:D And I want to maybe fit one digester at the back of my truck.
    From what I read on the internet I thing you get a better productivity of gas if you put stuff that haven't already been digested like cow shit. Cause in a way the job has already been partially done in the cow/animal digestive system. Putting grass or peel of fruits will increase the efficiency.
    3 years later did you manage to have good results? How about the smell? Cause I'm scared that having such installation right next to my house might not be a good idea if it smells too much :S
    Tschuss!

    • @valkarga
      @valkarga  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi Samuel, indeed. I think you only need to start the system with cow manure and then feed it with the things you say. Cow manure, since it has been already digested, has already the good microorganisms you need. I am not using mine at the moment, so if you want to have it for your truck, I could borrow it to you..

    • @valkarga
      @valkarga  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Sai, first thing to check id what you have fed the digester with. Did you started with cow manure? Cow manure helps to create all the right methane-producing bacteria.
      Another idea could be that there might be not enough pressure. You can add some weight, such as bricks on top of your car tire, to create more pressure. Related to that is what kind of burner you added in the end of your hose. If you connect it to a normal camping gas cooker, it will most likely not work. You have to connect it to one that is modified for biogas digesters, so, the holes are bigger and therefore more gas is able to come out. That is because we can't reproduce industrial like pressure, such as in the gas cans you buy from the market.
      Please let me know how it goes!

    • @valkarga
      @valkarga  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +David Mariano yes, you can connect the outlet to a gas stove and use the produced biogas to cook! however, you will need a special gas stove for biogas, with bigger holes, because the gas coming out of this digester has lower pressure. You can find one online, or find some other tutorial of how to modify a normal gas stove..
