- Catching Louisiana crawfish in a Venable Fabricators hydraulic wheel boat.
The video was taken by my friend Jonathan at friends ponds, Kent's crawfishing farm. At the time I was in the process of building my own ponds. We love our crawfish here in Louisiana and I love catching them in my cool boat.

Jay the boat is cool, it goes on land or shallow ponds, you can drive it up to your front doore. It is 7' wide and 14' long and has a 10' wide canopie it. I fish rain or shine no problem. This boat is 8 years old and built to last.

Hi friends, Just to tell you a little about crawfishing here in Louisiana. Two types of crawfishing here in Louisiana. Pond crawfishing which is from November to June. Atchafalaya basin crawfishing called deep water fishing from March to August. When the flood waters come down from the North the rivers and bayou's and the Atchafalaya basin swell. Then the basin crawfishing starts. People go crazy over them down here and will pay anything to get them. We have lots of restaurants here in my town of Lafayette that only sell boiled crawfish. They open and close with the season. We also have lots of stores with drive up windows that sell them to. Just drive up and take a bag full of ready cooked ones home. Throw down some old newspaper on the kitchen table, dump out the seaming hot boiled crawfish and go to town.

Kadio, thanks for asking, The boat is not unique to us here in south Louisiana. There are a lot of crawfish farmers here in south Louisiana and many boats like this one or used. Also there are other designs that work well too. This boat is considered the Cadillac of crawfishing boats here in Louisiana. The larger crawfish here average between nine and 11 inches long.

I fish 3 days a week. This will give time for the smaller crawfish to exit the traps. This video was taken at my friend’s ponds while I was building my own ponds. You will see some smaller crawfish in the tray but that’s ok because they went to a processing plant. At my ponds I only keep the nice ones and I throw all the small ones back. I stocked my ponds with red swamp crawfish. My other video Crawfishing with Albert & Brandon are the crawfish I used to stock my ponds.

Eric, there is a place in Morgan city that sells all the supplies to make crawfish traps they also have a video on how to make the traps. I will look for it
i see in your video, that boat means it. Would love to get into this but in canada there is no market for it. But we do have crawfish in our lakes and rivers.

Yes I am, but I will be skipping next year to rejuvenate the property and fix up the crawfish ponds.
Do you always only get 8-10 per trap?
At the beginning of the season I do. After the season picks up I will catch a lot more per trap.
Is that type of drive better for not injuring crawfish if it runs over them?
The best Drive unit is an outboard motor called a go devil. It will not kill the crawfish and doesn't make deep ruts in the ground like this hydraulic wheel. But the hydraulic wheel boat is preferred by Crawfish men here in Louisiana. I am sure a few crawfish will die underneath it but there are millions and millions of crawfish in our ponds.

Hello, Thanks for your comment, our crawfish season starts in November and I will be starting late this year probably around January because I got a new crop of crawfish this year. Can’t wait to get started. I want to eat some of those delicious Cajun boiled crawfish.

what type of fish are you using for bait?
Hi Corey, We use whatever trash fish is available. Pogey in the beginning of the season. Pogey is a soft oily fish which Louisiana crawfish love. For a short time we can get a Fish called Slicker. It to is a soft oily fish. We also use Buffalo, Shad fresh water and salt water. There are several others too, its just what is available. In the video I am using Shad. We also use a dry bait that looks like a big pellet made of corn and lots of other plant ingredients in it.
