Katniss gives Gale pity kisses
In the books we do get more of a backstory for Haymitch. He won the 2nd quarter quell (50th games) where it was decided that instead of 2 tributes reaped per district, 4 would be reaped. The arena looks like a paradise, but filled with poisonus food, plants, and deadly creatures. He eventually makes an alliance with a girl named Maislee from his district (who was Katniss's mothers best friend, and the og owner of the mockingjay pin katniss has) after she saves his life. They survive a while and then break off alone once it gets down to a lower amount of ppl left. Hes throwing rocks over the edge of a cliff at the edge of the arena and discovers that the force field bounces them back. Haymitch hears Maislee scream and finds her dying after being skewered in the neck by one of the birds in the arena. She dies in his arms. In the final fight between Haymitch and another tribute, he ends up unarmed and running towards the edge of the arena again. He gets there and the tribute throws her axe at him, but he falls to the ground dodging it, and the force field pretty much launched the axe back at the tribute, killing her. Haymitch won. But Snow thought that this was an act of rebellion and made the Capitol look foolish, so after Haymitch wins he ended up executing Haymitch's whole family and girlfriend.
It explains a lot of Haymitchs urgency with Katniss. He never had one to warn him about how being a victor doesn’t make you immune to the capitol. Haymitch was right on her like “yo the capitol are pissed so we’re gonna do damage control and get you through this”

It's genius how Plutarch designed the arena to secretly help Katniss, but in a way so that Snow wouldn't suspect him a traitor. Plutarch knows Katniss will use the elements to her advantage, so he puts the drinkable water in the trees; only she knows what to do when they get the spile. He makes the pond/stream water the antidote for the poison fog; she went straight into the water when she got burned in her first Games. In the book he even subtly flashed his pocketwatch with a Mockingjay symbol on it, hinting the arena's clock-format. Shout-out to Suzanne Collins for creating such genius storytelling.
Wait you are genius about the watch thing! I only remember "oh is he a fan? Or pretend to be one to lower her guard?" When i first read it.
i never even thought about the pocketwatch being a hint at the arena, only a hint at being a part of the resistance, oh my gods i need to reread with this in mind
There are also other small things that are directly working for all of them. Water arena makes it easier for people who can swim like Katniss and most notably it's the best environment for Finnick and Mags. Putting Cornucopia in the middle of it is also perfect for Katniss who is the best long-distance fighter in this line-up. Arena is a puzzle which is great for the Beetee and Wiress and has deep forest and some relatively safe zones to hide for - working for Peeta and District 6 tributes.
And then Plutarch used challenges that could appease Snow's tastes due to how theatric they are.
Thematically it was reversed 50th Quell, with food and water provided by the arena and sponsors, where as 50th had those only in Cornucopia. Whole arena is also full of forcefields that can block and kill the tributes (and partly help them - to for example cook) - which definitely was a dig at Haymitch, but also was a thing Katniss would be more aware about, as she did in fact shoot at the gamemakers before.
And when it comes to the actual traps we know about - most of them in a way referenced the things some of the tributes could know about or were forms of well known plagues and biblical monstrosities. Huge water waves - would be something that 4 and people living next to the dam could have some knowledge to combat/have the best chance to survive. Jabberjays were commonly known in Districts, especially 12 and directly mocked Katniss, because of the Mockingjay symbol and her tactics in the 74th. Paralysing fog could be reminiscent of deadly gasses in the mines of 12. Blood rain, insects, beasts, deadly thunderstorm - it kinda makes you wish we learned more about the other areas from a databook or something.
The arena having deadly quadrants is also a cool concept.
And with the watch, he also mentions that his meeting starts at midnight when showing it to her which may have been another hint since the lightning hits the tree at midnight, therefore that's when the escape will be.
Team peeta there’s literally nothing between her and gale aside from just being childhood friends and her feeling like she owes him.
They do have a close relationship bc of that, and in first couple of movie it seems as tho they are much alike, but when the revolution is game on, is when she realizes how different they are. They both have different takes on killing and what's humane or not, so of course they grow apart and it's more like she feels in debt with him yep
@@zuvasqit’s much easier to go team Peeta in the book. It’s not Josh hutchersons fault, but especially in the first book, Peeta comes across way better. He’s witty, charming and uses a lot of self deprecating humour which is endearing.

Real, plus he only likes her because he wants to own her, peeta actually cares about her feelings and would go as far as to support her with gale if it made her happy
Having read the books it was only ever Team Peeta. Gale represents war and destruction and Peeta represents peace and rebirth. Plus Katniss has an obsession with Peeta’s strong steady arms and long eyelashes. So Team Peeta.
Still, if there hadn't been people willing to fight, nothing would have changed and there wouldn't have been any opportunity to rebuild into something better. He is however very callous and have such a disregard for human life
@@oddjonsson2815I too would have total disregard if I watched my entire home town be bombed. Guaranteed everyone’s opinion on Gale would switch up if we had more of his experience throughout the books and movies.

Still, I can't blame him. I think the worst people of enacting change is, ironically Katniss. She really only does so because her hand is forced, again and again. In the early story and well in to catching fire she just wants to keep her head down.
I like the idea that Snow has had cameras on Katniss 24/7 since the Games and the moment Gale kisses her, he's like "it's finally time to go threaten her! I'm an 80-year-old man obsessed with a 16-year-old girl! This is totally normal!"
with the double cross and paranoia he had with last 16-year old girl from twelve - it's kinda justified

As much as I usually loathe love triangles in fiction, this story is one of the only ones I’ve seen do it well because it has a point.
A more obvious one in the books, but Gale and Peeta both represent differing worldviews. That’s what Katniss is really choosing between: it’s not just Gale vs Peeta, it’s revenge, anger and hatred vs peace, healing and forgiveness.
She has enough of the first in herself, she doesn’t need Gale. She needs Peeta.

I would have also loved Graham Norton, I feel like he’s the real life Caesar. Love Stanley Tucci and he was a great choice for the role.
haymitch ended up winning his games by using the dome to ricochet an axe and kill the last person, but since the capitol saw that as him “outsmarting them” they killed his whole family which explains the alcoholism lol also haymitch was in the 50th games which was a quarter quell and there were double the amount of kids in it which is nuts
Team Peeta. 1. I think they have more chemistry. 2. Peeta’s love for her is more pure and true. He just wants her to be happy. Whereas Gale is jealous and wants her to pick him regardless of what makes her truly happy. 3. Gale is a jackass.

Peeta always, Gale doesnt even come close. Katniss has to convince herself she would be fine with him, while convincing herself she could be fine without Peeta. In the books her and Gales relationship is really strained after the games. After she went through so much, Gale literally only brought up the fact she had to forge a romantic relationship with peeta. Even though they never had any previous romantic relationship and all it does it make her uncomfortable.
Nobody can convince me how he treated her after the first games was fair, or kind. It was selfish, katniss needs someone calmer and selfess, even if you were to prefer Gale, for Katniss she needs balance in her life and its gonna be Peeta always

Never gonna forget when I saw Lenny Kravitz in La. I was STUNNED. Some guy asked him for a pic and I kept walking, staring with my mouth open. His whole vibe and body language was just COOL. Shades on, leather jacket, suede shoes. Will alwaysssss regret not at least saying what's up 😭

same about Team Finnick. He's 100% my fave character in the entire series.
In the book, Gale was caught selling a turkey I believe by the peace keepers. Thus him being found getting whipped.
Darius was a peacekeeper, and it was assumed he came to Gale's defense. He was found all bruised and on the ground when Katniss got to the square despite the crowd and Peeta telling her to stay back.
Team Peeta everyday.
Although Finnick and Reacher are great choices too.

12:46 Haymitch has such an interesting story of being in the Hunger Games. He was in the Quarter Quell before this one and the “twist” was that they pulled twice as many victors, with a total of 40 kids in the arena. The arena was absolutely gorgeous with intoxicating smells and beautiful foliage. But everything turned out to be poisonous and tons of people died right away. He ended up teaming up with a girl from his district (I believe) and they got pretty far before she was killed. He ended up killing the last person by using the force field to his advantage, angering the Capitol. The two were badly injured by each other and Haymitch’s intestines were actually outside of his body when he was picked up by the hovercraft. He barely outlived the other tribute.
In Catching Fire Peeta and Katniss watch a bunch of old recordings of previous Hunger Games and they end up finding his and watching it. It goes into a lot of detail of previous games and it’s pretty interesting. I think there is a fan-made video acting it all out if anyone is interested in seeing more of his story.
If you view it as a punishment to the districts being the objective, then the gamemakers’ interventions make more sense
I also popped an edible after work. This is my favorite of the series so I was hype to watch with you. The district 11 tour scene never fails to get me. I also think of the line in the book they for some reason didn’t include. She said she sees her in her sister prim, the flowers around her home, and “everything beautiful”

In the book, we actually do find out about Haymitch's games. I love this movie, but i was a little upset that they cut out his entire backstory.

READ "Life Through Sea Green Eyes" RIGHT NOW. It's the best, most literate and thorough fan fiction ever made. It could practically be a published book. It goes through Finnick's life from the reaping of his first games, all the way through the rebellion. The details are fictionalized but everything relating to the Hunger Games franchise is accurate as can be. It's such a great and well done perspective, and it does include Mags' coaching and the sex trafficking aspect, but really delves into his "they pay me with secrets" line. It's amazing.

I’ve always loved finnick. I also love gale and peeta. I do not like that gale keeps trying to get katniss to tell him she loves him when she is in the depths of horrific ptsd and she’s not even out of the actual traumatic situation. I love Gale’s warrior spirit but katniss needs someone who understands her and Gale doesn’t seem to understand her after she volunteers for prim in the first one. He even tells her hunting humans is no different than hunting animals. Showing his lack of understanding of her predicament. If i were katniss, first of all, i would have died in the first games, but if a miracle happened and i made it out, i would probably lean towards gale … but that is my personality. I need that kind of man as a partner. Certain actions later in the mockingjay movies might alter my preference for gale. Love your reactions as always. I adore you accent. It’s very charming. I’m from the midwest. We have no discernible accent.

I owned this movie on blu ray, and one cool feature was the aspect ratio changed as Katniss went into the Arena. It's small things like that that really add a cool touch to a movie.

@@tainaaguiar5039 I think Kathiss's relationships with both Gale and Peeta should've ended platonically. Katniss never seemed that interested in Peeta until Mockingjay. Friendship still could have given her hope.
@@seventhave I think Katniss started catching feelings for Peeta way before the quarter quell. During her recovery from jumping over the fence and Peeta was helping her with the drawings on her plant book. Even in the first book there were cute little details that she was so unaware of that tells the readers she watches and notices Peeta or at least keeps tabs on him.
Before their kiss at the arena beach when Peeta said that nobody needs him she thought that yes, his family and friends will mourn him but they’d move on.

Her “I do, I need you.” Was always overlooked because of what they proceeded to do next 😅. Which is another point, Katniss is platonic with Gale, but never with Peeta. She did say in the cave in the first book, she thought she knew hunger but Peeta introduced her to another kind she don’t recognize.

Ngl I was neither team Peeta or team gale. They both felt forced. In general, Katniss’s character and agency just feel forced. It’s more prevalent in the next two films but the seeds are planted in this movie which is why in pointing it out. I read the first book in high school so I don’t remember a lot but I remember it being better than the movie. Idk about the rest of them though.
They DID take it into consideration that she would destroy the forcefield cause *spoiler* the Gamesmaster was in on it!!!

I've never read the books just seen the movies so I hope this isn't a silly question. I thought, based on the names of the people in the first hunger games (first movie) that their names were slightly based around their districts. Like Marvel and Glimmer for District 1, Thresh and Rue for agriculture D11. Peeta is a baker but he's from District 12 and Katniss is a plant like Primrose. Is it silly that I expected them to all be District themed names? Is that too restrictive to a writer? Granted Cato and Clove were from the masonry district and i think? those are biblical named references and they never gave Foxface's name.. Maybe I took too many edibles..

@@clover2739lol I felt the same. In catching fire he’s so petty with her and constantly making her feel like crap. I respect Gale for what he went through in his childhood, his heroics in saving so many from 12 and his efforts in the war, but he became a shitty friend to Katniss. In Catching fire he made her feel like this terrible person for just trying to survive, and every time she would mention how Snow is threatening her or how bad things are gonna get it’s either “yeh let’s rebel” with no plan, or “yeh but…what about us” when she’s not in the right position to process her feelings.
How do you read the books and have Team Gale as your takeaway. Even when she says she choose Gale over Peeta she is still thinking of Peeta.
I mean I choose Gale but now let contemplate Peeta eyelashes for a full paragraph.
