Twin Turbo 2021 Mustang Dyno Day

  • It's dyno day for my twin turbo 2021 Mustang Mach 1!! I was expecting to make decent power from the Hellion Sleeper kit with the base 62mm turbos but these results absolutely blew me away. This 2021 Mustang is the true definition of a sleeper: stock motor, trans, wheels, tires, and exhaust, and even ride height. The only giveaway that this makes almost 4 digit hp is the aluminum intercooler hiding behind the Mach 1's front fascia.

    I really debated about saying anything at all but here goes. I had the GFB controller on my brand new 2020 TT GT, 2k miles on the motor and it made all the boost! Grenaded the motor, windowed the block cylinders 1/5. The boost controller or solenoid failed.
    It was never right from day 1. I changed all the lines and fittings to Motion Raceworks push lock lines and it didnt help. Duty cycle percentage changes were all over the place very inconsistent.
    Not the first to have this issue either but a $300 boost controller is exactly that.
    I now run a co2 based Boost Leash, the AMS2000 is absolutely the best you can buy.
    Also running a built RPG 5.2 predator engine. The overboost feature will not save you.
    Just be careful!

      Hey I really appreciate it. That is certainly the LAST thing I want. I will say that out of the box I ran into issues with the Turbosmart wastegates but so far the solenoid has been trouble free. After rebuilding and leak checking my solenoids my boost controller seems to be functioning properly. You are right though you can never be too safe and a better boost controller is likely a small cost to pay for peace of mind.

      @truckandroll989  ปีที่แล้ว

      E85 is likely in the more distant future. These pulls were done with 100 octane and the ECU was adding timing meaning knock sensors were happy. The DW400 ID1000s are ok on gas but undersized for the flow requirements of Ethanol. For any serious track days I will likely be adding race fuel with additional octane for safety

    Curious what longevity is realistic at "only 600whp"?

    • @truckandroll989
      @truckandroll989  ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I have heard you are extremely safe at 600whp. Dare I say indefinitely. Keep in mind too its how you make the power as well. A supercharger is putting extra strain on the crank at all times. Nitrous is only violent when it is being used BUT the initial hit is pretty hard (take a look at the torque curve on a nitrous dyno graph). Turbos aren’t doing anything negative until you are in boost. Even then it is ramping in boost unlike a Whipple or other positive displacement blower. My point is the number is just a number. Tuning, fuel, how you drive, how often you maintain, etc. means a lot as well.

    Thanks for the video and congratulations on a great build. I was thinking pro-charger but this set up has got me questioning my decision (its not too, late my S550 hasn't even been delivered yet!). Sorry if this has already been asked but, I know the crank in these engines is bullet proof but I am worried about the rods. I dont plan on abusing my engine but how strong are they? Do you think they are the weakest link in a sealed Coyote?

    • @truckandroll989
      @truckandroll989  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I highly recommend you check out this video. They going into much more clear detail than I could regarding Gen 1 v 2 v 3 Coyote durability. I dont believe with gen 2 or 3 the rods or crank are an issue. 900-1000whp seems to be the limit (safely) for gen 2/3 but people routinely push past that.

    • @truckandroll989
      @truckandroll989  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oooo so many reasons where do I start.
      1. Less stress on the motor. You aren’t driving a blower from the crank snout so you are not using hp to make hp. Overall at the same boost level a turbocharger will make more power than a supercharger
      2. Ability to turn boost up or down on the fly. With 2 pushes of a button I can be at 750whp or 950whp. That sort of change requires tools on a supercharger
      3. More torque. A turbo is going to make more torque than a supercharger
      4. Somewhat similar nowadays but without boost the turbo drives 100% like a stock car

    • @PapaP86
      @PapaP86 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@truckandroll989 Gotcha. All makes sense. My thinking has been a supercharger would be more reliable and less maintenance in the long run (but maybe not to your motor stress point?), but my goal is only 700-750whp and don't want to mess with extra fueling, and only plan on pump gas/93 oct. At that I've heard you're fine with doing nothing beyond the oil pump gear.

    • @truckandroll989

      @@PapaP86 yea you could easily do that on wastegate pressure only (7psi) on the same setup that I have. Basically my kit minus the boost controller. I did not opt for the screamer upgrade. Yes these are the base turbos. I think the general misconception is you need to upgrade the turbos which come with the kit. The 62mm are honestly probably on the big side for most people. Id bet at this power level they are starting to get into a range where they are most efficient. You could even go smaller like a 55 or 58mm. I think the bit of lag you see with these actually helps traction

      @@thomasjones5541 ok phew thats good news. I cannot say anything bad about the sleeper option. I truly think there are probably less bends/piping for the sleeper kit and would suspect it keeps engine temps cooler being low mounted. Theres really no risk of hitting the turbos the only part below the frame are the two 2.5” charge pipes but they are tucked up close to the wheels so you’d have to hit something quite odd for it to be a problem. Speed bumps or anything like that wouldn’t be an issue.
