Could we have the May - December romance trope please?
What happened to that EMT that scumbag from the "newspaper" the New York Post exposed was just wrong. I honestly hope that scumbag can never find a reputable job again (assuming the Post ever fires him) after what happened to her. The story should have been that an EMT working during the hell that is this pandemic can't afford to live on her salary alone, not how she supplements it.

Please cover the "Ugly Husband, Attractive Wife" Trope, which is commonplace in sitcoms. The reverse very rarely occurs.

And when people say they do, the "ugly wife" character is more often than not played by a conventionally attractive woman whose presentation is frumped down. I like King of the Hill for how they subverted it: Hank and Peggy look very similar, but it also shows how a pretty woman can be seen as frumpy for her clothes and hair (like Peggy, who really doesn't look different from when she started dating Hank) and Hank shows more the passage of time.

I think it's to do with the fact that it helps inflate his ego, and can make him feel more 'manly' aka dominant. If she is the dim-witted one in the relationship, it is easier for him to not mind, because then that just automatically helps give him a upper hand through his intelligence. As long as she brings symbolic womanly beauty and pleasure to the table, which he can't bring himself, for him that's a good enough equation.
I think this idea is all wrong. It’s the traits of innocence, optimism, fun, spontaneity, creativity, and theatricality that makes the women “childlike”, which are all attractive qualities. people like to be reminded of their childhood when things felt easy and less stressful, i don’t see it as a pedophilic thing.

Carefree innocent playfulness can be appreciated by both genders, men just are conditioned alot to put on a tough front (which maybe worked to their advantage in evolution, like in fighting off wild animals, and hence it lasted so long). So they crave that balance in their women companion. I think the problem mainly arises when that ideal of innocence is enforced upon women so much that the woman is automatically assumed to be lesser and incapable. Women might want to willingly bring about that balance, but when men started to assume that's all we are and all we should be it started the problem, since it has often come at a dire cost for women.

That’s the thing: society portrays them as if they would for wanting power in all forms: freedom of all kinds (yes, including sexual freedom and yes, veing able to act just like men, for ex they can also have affairs without feelings being involved and them dump men just like men do eith women when they have their affairs, they can also make men suffer by driving them crazy and then dump them, just like men can make women suffer by playing with their emotions), financial freedom, the freedom to enjoy expensive stuff without feeling either shame or guilt for wanting luxury (I never understood why is luxury percieved as the devil, especially when its related to women buuuut anyway), high social position/great careers. Society percieves this type of women as ‘bad’ because they really represent a threat. Stop expecting women to be ONLY innocent, for God sake

I'm so ashamed of the film world's reaction to Jennifer's body. The men of that community make the mistake of thinking everything is marketed FOR THEM. It was made and marketed toward a specific demographic of women injured or damaged by American stereotypes and treatment of young women. It pulls at heart strings and reminds us of what it's like to be in a cutthroat society that tears your self esteem apart. Even the intricacies of toxic friendships that we ALL know too well.. That's why it is SUCH a cult classic. But of course men in film can't fathom the idea that things are not made for them and SLAMMED Fox in reviews, really hurting her self worth and confidence in her talent.

I honestly feel like that movie was ahead of its time. i do remember that movie being advertised to be a horror demon flick with a heavily sexualized teenage girl that has a lesbian make out session while murdering boys. at least that's how it was in my country. it was promoted to be a male fantasy and on that front it didn't really deliver I guess. I'm not sure about this but I think advertisers and the actual producers of a movie don't always interact? so the people making the misleading trailer weren't those who made the movie. I remember reading cristism back then about how that movie was boring or whatever, but thinking back people just didn't get the movie. It also didn't help that megan fox was starring in it and regardless of advertisement people, especially men, would have expected her to be sexualized and without actually character integrity. so people would have been disappointed either way. I'm so glad people nowadays are revisiting that movie and appreciate it's true story:)

Yes, but also men should learn how to consume media that isn't specifically designed for them the same way other audiences do. If everyone was able to sympathise/understand points of view different to their own, social progress would be much easier

They brought in college aged boys and boxed it into that category. It ruined both the director and meg's personal self esteem and convinced both of them they were untalented. To conclude, fuck that marketing team and their misogyny.

I'm very sad to say, I think this might be art imitating life. The reason this particular story is told so often is that it is relatable. Sadly, a lot of women in our society end up being punished for being beautiful.

There are women who fit the standard 'society' wants to see in the context of onlyfans, but choose not to engage in it. Those same women don't necessarily consider themselves morally above the women who choose to, either.
Personally I worry that engaging in that is reinforcing the idea that a women's value is her body. And how her body can be posed/dressed/glamourised, in order to satisfy a man's body. Women who 'objectify themselves' (whatever that means), are victims of a society that tells them their body is their only value. The onlyfans women that are aware of this systemic belief, are then complicit in the system which oppresses them: they know what their 'power' is and think they're just benefiting from it. But really they're reinforcing what generations of women have gone through- do I objectify myself for men, for some kind of security? Or do I take the hard path, and work to develop my knowledge of different fields, and do a job which doesn't rely on a man's opinion of the appearance of my body?
That being said, because this has been going on for so long, a lot of women (and men too) won't have access to the education that could give them life options, other than allowing themselves to be sexually exploited. So it continues.
Sex sells because everyone has a body: adverts often tell a man "buy this, and you can have this", but tell a woman "buy this, and you can be this".

When I was young and thin and "sexy", I remember several female acquaintances expressing their desire to be like me. As if looking a certain way gave me an advantage. It didnt. People (men) were nice superficially but almost all my relationship partners ended up treating me terribly. Being "attractive" may get you in the door but it certainly doesn't guard against the difficulties of being human. In fact the assumption that one is "blessed" because of their looks can contribute to tremendous isolation.

average women actually do better in life than beautiful women, there was even a study done on it too, and part of it is because most people are average-looking and it makes sense. i observed even on Facebook, i have 2 friends: one is very pretty, the other one average. the pretty one rarely gets complimented on her looks and not much engaement; the average one, her friends are always saying she's beautiful, she should model and im like "what?" she's clearly plain but its just that women arent threatened by her whereas theyre threatened by the pretty girl and resent her.....
even the movie "malena" was a cautionary tale against beauty. she was so beautiful that in her little italian village, men treated her like a whore they wanted to conquer and women hated her for the attention she got; it was a tragic story....but of course if u complain about ur beauty, nobody wants to sympathize w/ u either!
Have you seen "Ugly Betty"? The original story was written and aired in Colombia, and in one episode there was an special guest: Cecilia Bolocco, a beauty queen, supermodel and TV personality who was married to the notoriously ugly President of Argentina. In that episode, "ugly" Betty discovers his boss pretended to love her just to make her sign some documents that could make her get in prison. Totally heartbroken, she cries bitterly and then enters Ms. Bolocco acting as.. herself. She tries to calm Betty and shared her own story: how no one ever bothers to treat her as a human being, how other women behave agressively towards her, how most men see her as a prize to be win and to brag about... She added "I ended up getting married to the only man who really cared about my heart and my soul, the things that won't fade away when my beauty does."
There definitely is a sort of privilege to being pretty, let's not deny that. It's a disservice to the conversation. Heck, we're even more attracted to beautiful sunsets, full moons, pretty flowers, pleasant smells. It is our nature. Honesty

My favorite trope is the bombshell having an unexpected skill or interest like being really good at Math or fixing cars and she's completely nonchalant about it when it's revealed. Or says "you never asked". I don't know if it's a good trope or not but I like how it reveals biases the characters and the viewer never knew they had.

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries is just like this! Miss Fisher is a female private detective in 1920s Australia but she also has SO MANY SKILLS! She can drive a car, pick locks, fire a pistol, fly an airplane, detect a fake diamond, identify poisonous plants, cure diarrhea, and put together one fabulous outfit! And she never reveals how she knows any of these things!
No woman has it easy. Either you have the looks and you get punished for not putting your body at men's disposition (unwanted attention or sexualization); you have beauty/sensuality and exploit it knowing that you have more chances if your body complies to the required standard, or you're not considered attractive and only get to pick the leftovers of a society that doesn't deem you worthy. Classifying people by their "attractiveness" is just horrible.

Maybe I'm biased, but I truly believe that justifying our behavior with instinct and biology is not helping us to recognize how responsible we are for thinking the way we do. We're not above biology but we do have an option to think differently than how our impulses tell us to think.
@@auramora I'm not sure. Standards of beauty vary in different cultures and societies (although with mass media, it's become more homogenised), but that basic human impulse is always there. We can't think everything away.

Attractive women can dial their looks up or down to suit the needs of the situation. If they want to go about their lives as if they weren't pretty they can. Everyone has problems (rich or poor, smart or dumb, pretty or ugly) but some people have more options for dealing with them than others.
A man is expected to go after money and status but when a woman does the same, she is materialistic and money+career obsessed. A man is expected to build a career but when a woman does the same she is not a good wife and mother because she spends too much time at work instead of cooking, cleaning and taking care of everyones needs but hers. A man is expected to keep himself in a good shape but when a woman does the same she is self absorbed, she should better keep her husband and kids in shape, not her, how dares she still care about how she looks after she got married, what, she wants the attention of other men? A man is expected to have a lot of relationships, that’s considered to be absolutley normal, but when a woman does the same, omggg, it’s the hell on earth. A man is understood when he dosen’t want kids, but when a woman dosen’t want kids, she is a bad woman, all women should want kids etc etc. So please don’t tell me double standards aren’t real🙄🙄🙄

This video was excellently done! I knew such a woman at the children’s hospital where I work; she was a fellow Medical Assistant who was GORGEOUS and could easily been a model if she had wanted. Unfortunately she was treated very badly by the rest of our staff: excluded, gossiped about, treated by both fellow MAs and the Doctors like she was stupid, and even got a complaint once from a patient’s family bc she was “distracting” (i.e. Dad looked at her and Mom got jealous) But if you took 5 minutes to actually TALK to her, you’d find she was one of the warmest, kindest, and smartest members of our team, and she worked harder than half our unit put together! She was only there a year before she left to take care of her ailing father but wherever she is I hope she’s happy and people are treating her w the respect she deserves 💚💚

People don't want to hear that attractive people have the same struggles and sometimes even worse struggles than them. In my situation, I have very low and an unstable sense of self, because on the one hand, people compliment me and approach me, and want to get to know me, but on the other hand, my every flaw is picked on and magnified, especially by other women. Nice guys don't usually approach me, I guess because they feel intimidated, but I constantly get myself in situations with narcissistic and dangerous men. People assume I'm full of myself, but then when they find out how relatable I am, they tell me how unattractive my insecurities make me, and how confidence is sexy. I can't tell you how many times men in power have tried to sleep with me, and then try to sabotage me when I turn them down. The other thing that people don't realize, is that we are constantly feeling threatened by other even more beautiful women, and never being able to measure up. And having to always look our best because our value is in how others view us. I sometimes find myself having to apologize for having a bad hair day or gaining a few extra pounds.
You forgot that although you crave and love female company and friendships, other women often meet you with distrust and negativity. The ones that took the time to get to know me, told me often "wow you're actually really nice and funny" as if they weren't expecting you to be 🤦🏻♀️

You've described my experience exactly. I was neglected in childhood so for many years I looked in rough shape and was chubby from emotionally eating, so people considered me unattractive, but that bullying never got super bad. Comments were made, but people were more excited to bully me for other reasons. I had a glow up and suddenly no women want to be my friend, no man ever actually sees me as a friend, slut-shaming ensued, and nice men are less likely to approach me. I get catcalled and harassed all the time, so I can only go outside in baggy clothes and no makeup and it still happens incessantly, and I don't leave my house anymore for anything. I get constant negative attention from dangerous/narc men who see me as a sex object and fantasy, who do not want me to have a personality or be intelligent (and I have both) bc it threatens their ego. They want me to be a trophy and a vessel for their violence, not a person. It landed me in an abusive relationship. It's the main male attention I get. I don't bother to buy nice outfits anymore and only have athletic clothes now. I can't dress for me anymore. If I wanted to go somewhere fancy I'd truly have nothing to wear- if I can't wear leggings I don't go. I have strangers nitpick my appearance no matter how I look, but when considered pretty they say it right to my face to "humble me." Ironic bc I would/have never done that to someone else. They project on me that I must be very lucky and bitchy, but it's the opposite, I do a lot of community service and would take the shirt off my back for a complete stranger. I was 130 lbs. and have severe body dysmorphia, and people picked my appearance apart so much I developed a very serious eating disorder and I almost died. It gets super lonely and I spend all my time alone. Having been the hot friend and the ugly friend, I view pretty privilege as a curse. It's been super traumatizing. The main positive differences I notice is that store employees are much nicer to me and people are more likely to say yes to favors, but since I don't go out and just order everything, that doesn't come up a lot for me personally. I was much happier when my appearance wasn't triggering people left and right into treating me inhumanely. I miss the freedom I had in society when I wouldn't be harassed as much, people didn't always pretend to be my friend to get into my pants and then drop me immediately when their trick doesn't work, and when men wouldn't always view me existing in public by myself as an invitation to say whatever they want to me or touch me. I don't agree that all attention is good attention- it's scary and dangerous and I get targeted for violence A LOT more. I had a "friend" tell me I was lucky to experience SA bc it meant someone wanted to have sex with me. They say stuff like that and then wanna play the victim card. They're so mad at us they can't see we're on the same team. I'm queer and nothing I do is for the male gaze, but I'm feminine and therefore not allowed to exist for anything but men's horniness, so no one cares. It's a very dark and grave situation. Too many of us don't survive "pretty."

Last week at work, a woman I've known for four years told me that I intimidated her when I first started because, to use her words, "You're this bombshell walking around the office". First of all, I don't ever want people to feel intimidated or otherwise uncomfortable around me because of what I look like. It made me sad when she said that because do people assume I'm mean or something?
But then the second part about how after she got to know me and I suppose discovered that I'm a nice person but decided that it's because I don't see beauty in myself was weird and made me think. Am I not allowed to see beauty in my own appearance? Did she think I was nice because I must have had a poor self-image? I don't! I had nothing to do with what genes I inherited from my parents just like everyone else. It's not my fault but also I'm not blind. And I've also been told my entire life by family, friends, and strangers that I'm beautiful. It's not the most important thing I care about but I would be lying if I said I was unaware of it. I'm aware, it's just low on the list of my qualities that I value in myself.
I get it. A photographer can take a thousand photos of a woman and she's beautiful! It's art! But the INSTANT she turns the camera around to see for herself what everyone else is is seeing, the moment she snaps ONE selfie, she's stuck up, self-absorbed, shallow, and only cares about her appearance.
Beautiful women are not allowed to say, think, or even be aware that we are beautiful.
What makes me angry that it is men’s responsibility to not see a woman as a sex object only. No one can help the way they look. Just because someone is attractive does not mean you possess them.

I keep thinking of Bridget Jones's friend Tom, who is depicted very shallow in the films. In the books, he still is shallow and he still peppers Bridget with positive comments on how she matches the convention of attractiveness but there is a point in the first book where Bridget and her other friends don't hear from him, get worried he was the victim of a hate crime and even giving a little history of 1970s/1980s British gay and anti-racist activism, before finding out that Tom went in for a nose job.

I believe megan fox even said herself that jennifer’s body was her favorite project she had ever worked on. It was a movie that was aimed at a more lgbt/female audience (bc it focused on toxic female friendships and the complicated feelings they can produce) while also having a female director.
The marketing team misunderstood that focus completely and centered the marketing around “look how hot megan and her body is” to her straight male fanboys, who then proceeded to get Very Upset when the movie turned out to be, well, a horror movie, and not just megan showing her boobs for the entire runtime. I think one of the only ways megan felt bad during filming was the time she knew that the kiss scene (meant to represent the complicated feelings produced from toxic female friendships) was going to be used badly by the marketing team by having it in every trailer, which they did do.

I do wish that colourism was acknowledged with regards to the "Black Bombshells" Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne and Eartha Kitt even Halle Berry, Rihanna etc, are usually of mixed ethnic backgrounds and much lighter in complexion than monoracial Black women. I am having a hard time thinking of a single Black woman with two Black parents who is darker than a café au lait who acheived bombshell status.
I am saddened by the term "black Bombshells" and "Bombshells of color". A Bombshell is a Bombshell regardless of her ethnicity. As a biracial woman, I feel stupid when I am placed as a black woman, as though being mostly European is the only palatable way for a "black" woman to be. I am not black. There are many truly black women far more beautiful than me, who would not be considered so by white people.
I would like there to be more biracial and multiracial awareness. For one thing, people like me would not continuously be expected to ignore up to 75% of our heritage whilst standing in the way of actual black people. Also, real black beauty would be noticed, because white people could no longer pretend not to be racist by putting "black people" in power, on covers and on stage who are mostly white. The reason white people like "light black" people better is because we ARE white people as much as we are black people.

@@sadbabyrobot There is, in our culture and social reality. The roles and nature that have historically been fitted on men and women still echo through our time. Men are traditionally seen as "the sun" - proactive, penetrating, materialistic. Women are "the moon" - passive, receiving and spiritual. Men are thought to be ruled by logic & hard sciences are very much parallel to masculinity. Maslow wrote a great deal about it in his personal diary. He was pretty torn about psychology as a science flirting with femininity. He suffered from toxic masculinity, for sure, and felt like his research wouldn't be taken seriously if he couldn't make it more numerical or "factual". Jokes about women's logic tells it all.
These rigid roles of the genders were complementary, men needed women to love them, to guide their inner lives, to take care of their spirits. Women were the guardians of the home, men ruled the world outside of it. Even with bringing up the kids - women were fit take care of babies and toddlers, but when a boy matured he needed to be brought up under male guidance, usually that was in a boarding school of some sort.
