- The word "gold digger" conjures images of a young, beautiful woman using her feminine wiles to seduce a rich, older man, hoping to reap the rewards of a divorce settlement or inheritance. Gold diggers onscreen are regarded as predators. They’re derided as underhanded-if they’re not being dismissed as spoiled and ditzy. But from a certain point of view, the gold digger can appear savvy and shrewd-and sometimes, they can even be heroes. Here’s our Take on how the Gold Digger Trope has evolved from hero to villain to back again, and what her portrayal says about our society’s own love affair with money.

I thought that Amy from Little Women was immature, shallow, and selfish but Greta Gerwig's adaptation made me see her in a new light. Amy's speech on marriage and money as a woman is my favorite part of the movie.

She was and still is so sadly misunderstood. The persona we judge her for was for the movies only; IRL she was quiet and contemplative with simple tastes, and even her former husband Arthur Miller said she read as many books as he did, that she was anything but vapid. I found a book called "Fragments" years ago that had some of her poetry and scribbled thoughts and she had a whole other talent that could have blossomed with the right help and support.
Her marilyn monroe persona was so much different than her real personality. She was shy, smart, and she even had a stutter. She cared about fame,but she didn't care about money

This reminds me of how many Americans viewed bank robbers as something like heroes during the Great Depression. They were striking against the guys who crashed the economy.

I used to really dislike this trope. I despised the stereotype that always assumed women were extremely shameless and manipulative monsters who intend to exploit other people’s money, more often in regard to men. However, in retrospect, knowing how for a long time women couldn’t get a job or even open a bank account in their own name without the written permission of their husband, I feel more sympathetic and sometimes even proud when I see women earn their coin. It’s interesting to see how we’re more understanding and supportive of this trope currently compared to previous generations before.

It's just misogyny, it's fine for men like Leo and Hugh Hefner to date young and beautiful women only for their looks but the moment a woman dates a man for his assets she's a gold digger. But a relationship based on "This is a temporary, mutual gross deal" is very different from one based on "I hope he/she dies while we're together, the sooner the better".

That tends to happen if a gold digger is with a significantly older man like a 65+ year old however the man in that case isn't delusional and many of them purposely seek a relationship because they want to find someone to give their inheritance too, they know they're old and that they'll die soon.

The men who often really hate gold diggers are the ones who don't have enough money to exploit them. Men love gold diggers when they are well off enough to exploit women. I have never seen most "gold digging" women in the real world as villainous.
Me. I prefer just to get my own instead of have to fake interest in someone I can't stand. I am way to honest and assertive to pull it off.

Yeah it’s always “why are these hot young women dating old men” and never “why are these old men dating these hot young women.” I would argue the relationship of gold digging-sugar daddying doesn’t just go both ways, I would argue the men benefit more and ultimately hold more power still. Bc for the men it’s always a choice, and the Wall Street type of money to spare anyways, but for the women, if you have little economic opportunity and you’re constantly disadvantaged in the workplace, are you really “choosing” to enter into these relationships?
It's less of a choice for the men. Most men only get a choice later in life when they get richer. That's the key difference. It's like a man dying in a desert coming across some dirty water. Why do you think they call it being "thirsty"?
@@TributesAndUnique well that type of inequality still exist, I know a few cases of middle age to old men that purposely search very young, beautiful and almost always very poor, whit little or no opportunity for education or anything else, or in a desperate situation. For those girls marring an old man is pure survival, and the thing is as time past, this has I see it evolve normally ends in an abusive relationship, where the men know he has all the power and is not afraid to use it or abuse it. This is not always the case obviously, sometimes both parties understand the situation and is more of a pracmatic situation, but still is not always a stupid girl that wants easy money and doesn't care about anything else.
Also, reputationally, it's always the women that are affected far more significantly than the men. For men, it's just the norm; of course,he's going to date someone younger and hotter but for women, it's considered "immoral" when they also benefit from the arrangement.

Debbie from "Addams Family Values" is the definitive, most entertaining example. She's unapologetic about what she does, and Joan Cusack plays her so hammily, that's it's easy to feel bad for her. She also fits in well with the kooky clan, so much so that they simply don't care that she's a serial killer! 😂🖤

Why are gold diggers seen as worse than the people they exploit. The people who get to such a position (a majority of the time) exploit thousands if not millions to get to where they are now so its simply somebody mooching off of the exploiters of exploiters.
Please know they’re exploiting for the women’s beauty. It’s a trade off. People just don’t discuss it.

But how do you think you get to the "1%" where do you get the money to invest if you can barely even afford your rent. How do you afford to become a lawyer if you can't afford law school and the monthly loans you are going to accrue, or a doctor with daily tests averaging $100-$300 each, certifications or finding the time to work to attend lectures, do homework , have clinic hours etc. I feel like you don't understand that a majority of people who are going to become lawyers or doctors usually have extremely close relations with their parents allowing them to have access to more living and monetary resources. I myself wanted to become a doctor but I realized I wouldn't be able to financially support myself throughout that time and my mom wouldn't either. It's not that black and white and if you make "your" money from the exploitation of overseas workers and underpay your workers for the value THEY make you then you didn't "honestly" make your money in my opinion and I don't really see the difference between them and a gold digger ethically

@@bannedmann4469 I didn't say they were all cons I said they exploit people (not paying them for their value) and accrue the amount of money THEY make and instead of investing that into their workers (raising wages, adding benefits) a majority of the time, to make more money, they lay people off who are experienced because they cost more and leave just enough of them to train those who are new who they get to pay less and overwork. It's not communist propaganda it's the reality of capitalism, it just sounds unappealing when it's not coming from a right-wing zealot.

Congratulations on being first! 🎊👏🏾 I agree, the housewife is usually depicted as being bored, and wanting a life beyond tending to her husband and children's needs, which tends to lead to an affair with a dashing stranger.

I thought the Umbrella Academy plays on this trope very well where the mother, Grace, is actually a robot designed to be the perfect house wife and mother.
I think it’s because the homemaker sort of does depend on a good husband to mother. The husband has to have the same goal of parenting and being a good husband and father, which society no longer champions in men. It’s not exactly a balanced approach since society really doesn’t get that keeping a home, being a wife and managing a child is a lot of work. Especially since the women that do this seldom have less than two kids, they usually have more. It also makes it really difficult depending on the industry for a man to take time off to recover and rest or most men seldom do more than just work. Trust me I grew up in this system. Most housewives end up extremely unhappy as more often than not, the husband eventually gets bored and wants a different vibe. The housewives end up in trouble since they don’t have career experience or connections since they put all their eggs in one basket.
Two things I've seen an awful lot of IRL:
Men who flaunt their money to attract women, then are insecure that the women they attracted are only after their money.
Women who flaunt their sexuality, then are hurt or angry the men they attracted are just after the sex.
What they have in common is a willful obliviousness to the connection between HOW they attract and WHAT they attract.

Probably because when a gorgeous man is wanted by a woman, she wants to LOVE him and marry him and make him happy and satisfy him sexually and emotionally.

Why do women adore what they are attracted to while men loathe and exploit and despise women the more attracted they are to them?
It would be cool if one could wear a sandwich board over a burqa with our IQ scores and how many languages we speak and how many instruments we play and are EQ level and Big 5 personality traits and psychological assssments to attract a mate.
But it doesn't work like that, for one thing. For another even if this hypothetical setting would take place, men would absolutely choose the objectify less intelligent women to lie readily control and to feel superior.
But also? Both financial security and sexual attraction are incredibly important facets of romantic partnerships!
Just like I love cooking and wining and dining a new partner, I would be legitimately hurt if I found out they ONLY got with me for my meals.
So a person has every right to be upset for being so dehumanized as to be appreciated ONLY for one attractive trait instead of as a human that contains multitudes.
But even when a woman wants a man JUST FOR MONEY...
She wants to give him marriage. Sex. Companionship. Arm candy. A wife. Children. Housework. Emotional labor, etc for that money. That's more than anyone gets from anyone ever.
When men use women for sex, they literally just use them as an object and don't even give the woman any sexual pleasure.
So it's a false equivalency to suggest both types of exploitations are the same.

I still think a modern interpretation of a gold digger isn't necessarily heroic; not as villainous as her husband, but ultimately her way of life depends on maintaining her husband's status. unless the gold-digger gives back to the affected community, or works to take away her husband's power, she is just another grifter who benefits from the subjugation of the masses. Note, that I am not saying she is automatically a villain; just that she shouldn't be praised for being self-interested.
When Jenny said “this game is rigged, and doesn’t reward people who play by the rules” I felt that so deeply. I have always admired women who full-on go in demanding what they want, and being willing to stop at nothing. Not easily getting tricked up by love. I have been worn out by trying be loving and understanding, and deep down, I wish I would have took these men for whatever their current value was, and simply dipped. When I re-watched The Parent Trap as an adult, I was way less inclined to see Meredith as a villain, and much more impressed that she was so independently successful at the age of 26!! Wasn't her fault that she hates camping and the dad (whose name I can't even remember, clearly not as memorable) had way more baggage than she anticipated!! Maybe she dodged a bullet ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Nah. The girls in Hustlers were absolutely criminals. 😂 But I get the gist of what y’all are saying. However, this trope is definitely not “liberating”. The so-called gold-digger is no more free than she was before because she’s still dependent on that uneven dynamic. She is just being compensated for it, so she’s a lot more stable (even if she’s no less disposable). That system has brought women stability and survival since forever. We only engaged in it because of our limited options. It’s an old way, but it’s not ideal. The fact that it still persists in modern times only speaks to an ugly reality. It’s nothing to feel positively about. Nobody should *have* to use sexual politics to climb the socioeconomic ladder in 2021.
At the end of the day, I think women- and men- should get it how they live it as long as both sides know what’s up. 🤷🏽♀️ But let’s not glamorize these choices. We can empathize with this lifestyle and put into historical context without spinning it.

The Plastic Trope or any other name that refers to women in movies who are obsessed with staying young and beautiful. We see them in movies all the time. A movie that stands out to me the most is Death Becomes Her (Merly Steep and Goldie Hawn). Both women take a mysterious tonic that makes them look young and gorgeous but they pay a hefty price!

I would not characterize Ginger from the movie "Casino" as a gold digger. I personally think these arrangements are bad because it requires the woman to exploit herself and her body, and the man holds power over her because he knows she is young, dependent, and probably not that financially stable.
It's all a mess. I don't think there's anything wrong with guys wanting a beautiful girlfriend or women wanting a boyfriend/husband with lots of money. Was she a gold digger, though? In the book she certainly didn't come from a poor family, and she and Gatsby couldn't marry because he had no prospects at the time. Also, she and Tom had known each other since their teens and there was admittedly a toxic love between the two that made her stick with him. Daisy always struck me as just being a lazy, shallow woman who bent to the will of the strongest man, with no real inner compass of her own.

Jed from The Night Manager is an interesting inversion of this trope. Her decision to be a gold digger stems from the fact that she was a teen mom with no marketable skills, and she funnels money to her elder sister at great risk to provide for her young son. Furthermore, she's friendly with the wealthy socialites in Roper's social group and deeply maternal to his son. She's also something of a tragic figure due to the guilt she feels at her shortcomings as a parent and the disapproval of her family towards her choice to accept the financial support of a criminal.
If Jed could get Roper she could get anyone. If she knew for sure what he was doing she should saved up and dipped.
It's a transaction her youth and beauty for his money.
You forgot the best gold-digger of them all: Daphne from 1959's "Some Like It Hot". She is relentlessly pursued by the millionaire Osgood Fielding III. At first she tries to escape him, but when he proposes, she decides to marry him and then divorce him and take half of his money. She says she will cite the fact that she is actually a man masquerading as a woman in order to hide from the mob as the grounds for the divorce. Shenanigans ensue (if you haven't seen it, watch it, it's a great movie, Marilyn Monroe's in it, but SPOILERS!) and finally, as Daphne and her friends are sailing off in Osgood's boat, she starts to lists reason why he can't marry her. He replies calmly to all her responses. When she finally reveals that she's a man, Osgood simply says, "Well, nobody's perfect." And you're left with the feeling the marriage may go ahead. How's that for subverting the gold digger trope?!

It's weird how it's okay for a rich and powerful man to choose a wife based only on youth, attractiveness and sexuality, like it's the only valuable traits a woman can have. I guess it's good to have stories where women take advantage of men undermining them. Still, the fact that it works this way says something about society.

Maybe it's because I was already an adult when I watched Parent Trap for the first time, but I've always struggled with the narrative of Meridith being this villainous gold digger.
Like Elaine Hendrix said, she already had her own money and career, and when we meet her for the first time she is actually nice to the child. It's the twins that decide she's got to go - and even then Meridith only really snaps after the kids put a lizard in her hair and pushed her onto a lake while she was asleep lmao. She obviously wasn't a kids person but I do think that they could've made it work if it wasn't for the twin's shenanigans.
I think we as women admire the Gold-Digger because it takes a cunning, don't give a sh*t-type narcissistic person to rip off the binds of morality to do something like that. I know my girlfriends and I wish we could throw away our morality to become gold-diggers and live an easier less stressful lifestyle, and use men the way they have used us.

Met a real golddigger once. And she was not a good person. She went to old and sick People and manipulated them to give her money, which she thought she deserved for 'helping them'. I think there is also aspect of people being like "thats not romantic" or "that isn't true love! Marriage and relationships should be about love!". Though honestly, people can be very hypocritical regarding what they believe to be love or romantic :p Plus people have different ideas about love or romance anyway. For some reason most people don't seem to consider having conversation about your mutual future goals, plans and expectations for relationship before you start dating so you can avoid misunderstandings and disagreements down the line that could have been avoided in first place with good communication to be "romantic".
(on sidenote, also getting annoyed of romantic comedies where one in pair is suddenly like "we have been dating for years but we never discussed before that one of us is uncomfortable with idea of marriage or having children". Why does all romance media have to be about drama and communication issues?)

The Parent Trap was pretty good imho, because I felt like Meredith was so... human! Because she was a fleshed out character with a motive, a story, showed her emotion, what she thought and felt, and had an actual personality. You learned what she likes and hates yadda yadda. And she dared to be vulnerable at times around the kids. And even though she had some shitty motives (selfish), she wasn't inherently evil, she didn't hurt anyone and wasn't abuse as far as I could remember. I wouldn't like her as a person myself, but I do see her as a person. It was pretty good!! Really well acted and well written.
I'd like to see how fast that pay gap closes once women start claiming their tips.
Ah, yes, tips. The extra money only pretty women get if they work in the service industry and not any other. There’s still going to be a pay gap, since being a woman affects the trajectory of your career, not just the day to day.

Every service job I worked when I was young, Dunkin' Donuts, Jimmy Johns, etc., women werr constantly reprimanded for getting caught using tip cups, but it was never a write-up, just a light scolding. Guys would try, but guys don't make tips, just a general fact. If you're too blind to see that tips are likely the balancing factor in the wage gap, then you really need to step outside of your shelter more often.
