Amen bro, especially your point at 2:17. The amount of times I try to show someone an older game because of its cooler design than a new game in the series...but they instantly get turned off because of the "outdated" graphics/animations....bruh, I'd say "new-stalgia" blinds people more than nostalgia.

When I was in the army, I constantly got shit for playing on ps3 purely because it was old. Like why would you play that when there's newer stuff. And upon telling them that even though I have a gaming pc and ps4 in my room, I still like to play older games that aren't available on current hardware since a lot of exclusives are stuck on ps3. They look at me like i'm insane and that I that I should play the newest CoD like the rest of them.

This whole nostalgia nonsense is proof why the gaming community is one of the absoluty worst. Hurr durr you like it because of nostalgia. Yeah sure, yet its ok to consider old movies better than modern movies. Makes total sense. It's ok to consider an old black and white movie like Psycho one of the greatest ever made but if I consider like God of War 1 one of the greatest games ever made it only is because of "nostalgia". Those are the same people that say: "Hurr durr, you are a casual because you dont like what I like, go back playing Fortnite." "True gamers" are really like casual movie goers.

I remember playing FFX on my PlayStation 2 with the only TV me and mum had. I remember her asking questions and it years later and not knowing she had good memories of it as well.

Nostalgia is a feeling, not preferring old game design. I love the original Castlevania games because they offer stuff that other games don’t offer. They might have clunky controls to others, but to me, the controls are super satisfying. If they weren’t, the game would not be as popular as they were. Sure preferences change all of the time, but that doesn’t mean that a game “hasn’t aged well”. I have nostalgia for games, but they are pretty much strictly DS and Wii games. Some of those games I am nostalgic for are mediocre, but I still cherish the memories of playing it. I’m not going to enjoy the mediocre games now, except for maybe the first few minutes based off the novelty of nostalgia. If a game holds up for me, it’s usually never with nostalgia.

Dark Souls 2 came at a really formative time in my life and gave me a lot of comfort when I was struggling. Going back, I don't think it's perfect in the slightest, but I still love it, and playing it draws up those old feelings of simpler times in my life. To me, that's nostalgia.

Omg bro, the ending ripped a hole through me. I experience true nostalgia all the time but only describe it by the bad nostalgia definition, you reopened my mind to true nostalgia. I feel you so much on playing games with my Dad and that being my real nostalgia, you made me remember playing old wrestling games with my Dad on ps2, I also remember playing old dragon ball games as a kid and getting my ass kicked by my Dad but still having fun. I remember playing gta 3 when I was 3-4, and when I couldn't get through a mission he'd beat it for me, and I remember playing through gow 2 like a million times as a kid, I didn't play any of these games again until my late teenage years or early adulthood. That's because I have nostalgia from another set of games in my early teenage years, I have so much nostalgia from black ops 1 and 2. Not nostalgia for the games themselves but for hopping in lobbies with my online friends and fucking around in mp or trying my hardest to get to our highest round in zombies, I remember so much fun and funny bs happening and I didn't even realise how much fun I was having; also playing zombies with my younger brother all night long. I get your point, nostalgia is actually rarely for the actual game but the memories you gained with playing these games that's true nostalgia.

I think some people just can't understand the ideas of not liking the latest and "greatest" or that older things can be better than the new, and instead blame nostalgia. Like the people who think that if a game isn't 4K 120fps it "looks like a PS1 game" and thus is bad. I imagine they're either young or very casual with their interest in gaming and just focus on whatever is new and shiny.

Great video. To me, the "nostalgia" arguments that arise in online 'discussions' come across as half-assed and a way to deflect criticism of newer games. I guess that's primarily because I'm a zoomer approaching mid twenties, having been old enough to play and experience games from the 6th and 7th console generation and get an exposure to the climate of that time, but not enough to be able to truly understand and appreciate it and the previous generations.
With that said, there are plenty of games of the past I had never played before, like Planescape torment and Silent Hill, and yet I can't be helped but amazed by how well constructed they are. Silent Hill especially, is a masterclass in sound and visual design. The camera work in those games is breathtaking and it pains me to see so many call the camera in the first 4 Silent Hill games "outdated", just because they're so familiar with the 3rd person over-the-shoulder camera used in 90% of triple A games today, and fail to recognise the artistry behind it.
Again, I guess because of my background, I'm better able to appreciate these games, not only in the context that they were made in, but also looking at them retrospectively. But I digress.

When it comes to nostalgia for Gen 1 in pokemon, the only part about I dislike are the genwunners who think gen 1 is the only good generation and everything else is crap or uninspired. To this day people always bring up how Klefki is a boring design because it's new, even though that pokemon came out in gen 5 which is 12 years old(feel old yet?). I like aspects about every region which allows me to look past my own bias even though I have a favorite, but I don't dislike any of them as a whole. What I mean is, genwunners say how everything after gen 1 is uninspired or lazy yet refuse to acknowledge how Muk is just bigger Grimer, Dugtrio and Magneton are just two more of the same pokemon slapped together and are considered an evolution.
There's elitists for everything, not just gaming, but the ones who say one game is better than all the others in the series are the most toxic. You're allowed to like that generation or that game, but to say all the others are bad and you're a fake fan for liking them is pathetic behavior.

Stop strawmanning nostalgia hater and lovers. Nostalgia is outdated and should be updated to have better graphics and the present should be more text based and zoomers should go back into the womb.

It's just hard to discuss opinions of older video games with people in general. You can try and talk about how you don't really like Assassins Creed, for example, and immediately get dog piled with opposing opinions and reasoning. When all you wanted to say was the early parkour mechanics were janky at best, and the combat was extremely simple and boring, while the side missions are just repeated over and over. They'll argue you're reducing the game down to one thing you don't like (even though you mentioned multiple things) and then they'll name a random extremely popular game like Dark Souls and say "oh, well, people like dark souls and say it's really hard but it's actually a baby game because all you do is poke the enemy and run away, so it's actually a bad game". "Well, in Call of Duty all you do is shoot people". They will argue you're reducing their favorite game down to one issue and then immediately turn around and do it to another popular game. Like somehow that logic makes sense??? I think they think by putting down a very popular game it somehow means that the game they're defending couldn't be as bad as you're saying "because *popular game* is actually bad".

an interesting example of this is crowbcats new video on RE4 and RE4 remake, cherry picking footage of the remake to highlight negatives in bad faith and only show the good things about the original. It baits oldheads nostalgia of the original (which i love and grew up with) in an attempt to discredit the new one (an infinitely more fun game, albeit lacking some sound design and the cheese of the predecessor).

I found that most of the games I loved as a kid, I don't like anymore. Turns out I just missed the days when I didn't have depression and wasn't always worried about if I'll get a day off this month. I think a lot of it is missing simpler times
