This is my favorite episode. ^^ A fascinating idea that says so much about the characters. The idea that taking away what you see as unhealthy traits of yourself makes you still unhealthy, just in a different way and in a way that makes it no longer "you" is so interesting to me.

I mean, Idk about it being unhealthy and such. But the thing is that, while removing the toxic parts of yourself isn't necessarily a bad thing, this episodes feels more to be about the idea that some people don't, actually, know what parts of them are truly toxic/bad for them.
As we saw, Rick considered his affection for Morty to be what's dragging him down, and what was toxic. He became a better person, and overall more empathetic...he just didn't actually care what happened to Morty anymore.
Same with Morty.
And it wouldn't have been so bad, if the toxic parts of them didn't become sentient people. So detoxifying basically also meant that they'd be abandoning actual, genuine, sentient beings, and leave them alone to die.
If it was just the first thing, it would've been something they could deal with. But, from Rick's standpoint, since he's not toxic anymore, he actually cares about others (except Morty, like, he's nice to him and such, but doesn't care what happens to him), including the toxins.
@@GrimmBones They definitely don't know exactly what parts of them are bad for them, which makes sense. There's no way anyone could figure out what a person needs or needs to get rid of to be healthy, since everyone is so different and from different circumstances. I like to think of Morty losing his conscience as being a result of him travelling with Rick enough to become jaded to the point of thinking "caring about people" is holding him back. I don't think detox Rick actually cares about others, he's just completely neutral and passive. He was willing to let Toxic Rick completely destroy the planet all because "It's not our place", which begs the question, would Rick have just let himself die or would he abandon the universe like he did before? I dunno but both seem pretty insane.
They are definitely "happier" but they're also not really "them". Detox Morty is completely unrecognizable from regular Morty and Detox Rick is... passive... to an ironically destructive degree.
Fun fact, Stacy is voiced by Tara Strong. Who voiced your entire childhood. Seriously, look up her characters, she's like all of them.

@@wessltov yeah, the high on life stuff is usually short lived.. not always outbursts of anger, sometimes it's just sadness or disappointment, for me it was derealization.. everything feels great at first, but eventually you just enter the real world and realize that having a good outlook on life doesn't make the bad stuff go away... still, it's healthier than to be a depressed loner who complains about everything..
still, at the very least i haven't been a pessimist in nearly half a decade, so i don't worry too much about it
Psychedelics are used in therapy because they allow people to change their pathways more easily. Trauma can be undone much more easily under psychedelics and it's _permanent_ change.

I do think it's a fun lesson to show that positives/negatives do make us up as a person, but it was interesting to see what Rick and Morty thought were each of their toxic traits. Also Voltron robot!, very neat.

This group of episodes in the 2nd half of Season 3 are still my all time favourite bunch.
I love this episode's concept of the machine removing what you identify as toxic, rather than operating on an objective standard.

That's why he suddenly slapped Morty across the face earlier, even though such a thing was out of character for his "detoxified" self. He was testing his theory: when he felt no remorse about it (or at least no more than slapping a stranger) he knew he was right. His pre-spa self really did consider his emotional attachment to Morty a _negative_ aspect of his personality, and it really was removed along with his _obvious_ sociopathic traits.

I notice that reactors seem to immediately go to that the detoxfied Rick didn't really care that much about Morty, and the toxified version cared too much... and detoxified Rick even mentions the crucial word that separates health and toxicity -- 'IRRATIONAL'. I don't do the patreon, but I hope you touched on that aspect during the commentary, and that very important word. Very well-written episode...

I never understood the mentality of running away when someone is too honest about themselves and how they feel about you upon first meeting.
Like I don't know how you do the mental gymnastics of turning a quality that you NEED in a partner into a red flag, shiz whack bro. Luckily I found a woman who appreciated how forward and not closed off I am. I feel like it's definitely a you problem if you're intimidated or weirded out by a guy who doesn't need time to let you in. It's like you require them to be traumatized and untrusting or they are no longer attractive. Says more about you than the other person, for sure. It was just frankly offensive when I worked through my trust issues and jadedness in pursuit of love just to be told that my honesty and eagerness is a red flag. Like, sorry I'm not a broken person that doesn't respect you enough to not play games and hide things? It was a great filter for people not worth my time though.
Morty was absolutely overhamming it by a factor of 7 though, just talking about real life people here.

i never liked the messaging of this episode. They gave morty as excellent life, only to take it all away at the end and tell the viewers that you should be accepting of your "faults" or something lol, like bro that's what was making his life miserable and all the other awful people in his life dragged him back to that, instead of accepting the healthier version of himself that he wanted to be. Every chance morty gets to be happy gets ripped away from him, and to me, that hurts his character. Like IRL, i'd choose to lack of conscience 10/10 times if it meant getting to be permanently happy, content, and confident for the rest of my life. To me, this ep was promoting people to accept mediocrity instead of them working to achieve their ideal version of themselves, which is inherently weak behavior imo.
Bro you got problems. Morty was NOT actually healthy, he just thought he was. It left all his manipulative tendencies that we see in "Evil Morty". He literally got to "psychopath status" cuz even though he seems friendly and polite, he's got no conscious. Healthy Morty is terrifying. He wouldn't hesitate to pull a gun trigger if he thought it was the most efficient way. -
