    As the indulgence of the Holidays comes to an end and a new year begins, many make resolutions to shed a few pounds. For hundreds of years people have felt pressured to attain the ideal body type of their time. And they’ve come up with some eyebrow-raising, stomach turning and even deadly methods of loosing weight. Let’s explore body ideals through the ages and some of the most unbelievable diets people put themselves through to attain them. DO NOT try any of these historic weight loss methods at home. Spoiler alert, thousands of years of acquired medical knowledge and trying some really weird diets hasn’t found any better weight loss secrets better than eating less and exercising more. And hundreds of years of pressure to attain unrealistic body ideals tell us that we should all try to love the bodies that we are in.

    My NY resolution: no more excluding whole food groups, counting calories, over exercising, counting, recording food diaries and exercise logs. Deleted all diet and exercise apps from my phone. Instead: walk someplace pretty, read more, scroll less, get outside -plant a garden, paint my ugly kitchen cabinets and do other home projects, make my bed every day.

      Well no more extreme calorie counting for me ... i'm just in general dropping any habits I know I can't maintain. I've done good over the last 2.5 yrs going from a hair shy of 300 down to 170 (20-25 more to go). If I hadn't done a good balance of calorie counting & exercising I wouldn't have made it. They also sold some products for people that were 'too skinny' to gain some weight in the periods where people were still walking everywhere or doing a lot of physical labor and curvy silhouettes with uses of corsets or girdles were a thing. I don't think that's as much a thing anymore at least for women (though there's stuff guys do to add bulk) now that we have more plastic surgery options.

    I was a skinny little 5'2" teenager in the 90s. I've got a cousin who's the same age as me, and she used to just despair that I weighed 110 and she didn't, and I kept saying, "Dude, you are *8 inches taller than me.* If you weighed what I do, you'd be dead." Society really drummed in the idea that the number on the scale and the size of your jeans were what mattered, no matter your body type. It was horrible watching girls I knew -- healthy, pretty girls -- hating their very skeletal structure because it meant they had wider hips or rib cages. (Now it's been flipped around, and I get total strangers telling me I'm too skinny.)

    • @therealopaartist
      @therealopaartist 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I'm not fat, but I do have petite shoulders but a large ribcage. It gives the illusion that I'm fat, but you can feel my ribs.

    • @GherkinBitchs
      @GherkinBitchs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Aww you shouldn’t have people telling you your too skinny! See I grew up in the 90’s too and I have large boobs, large hips and a large butt, luckily my friend group and the area I lived in was a largely black community and I was actually complimented regularly on my curves rather then put down. But taking one look in a magazine or watching the TV/movies could really pull down my confidence regardless and I did suffer with a form of anorexia when I was 15 (starving myself). Now I am happy with my shape and I exercise 5 times a week and eat very well, I am not super skinny but I am healthy and that’s all I can ask for! As long as you are healthy fuck the haters, if someone tells me I’m “fat” because of my big boobs, hips and butt then I’ll laugh because I’ve probably got a better diet then they have and I’d be able to outrun them anytime 💪🏻 it’s all about accepting who you are and accepting that people come in different shapes and sizes ❤️

Now the talk about cholesterol and blood pressure have made me cautious on my food intake. I eat anything I want only not as much and read the labels of what I make. Fruits and veggies are a very important part of how I do it. I do not follow my parents eating habits and I do not eat like my Dad did but I don't think he knew what he was doing. When I did the cabbage soup diet in the 90s, it was not just soup. Everyday had a breakfast, lunch, and dinner specific to it. I’ll never forget that once a week (or 2 weeks) I could have a potato for breakfast 😂. The soup came in as a freebie. Hungry? Have cabbage soup. As much as you like. Stuff yourself with it. And that sounds great until you try it. It’s AWFUL. Zero added salt. That’s why you lost weight: salt crash gives way to water weight loss. Does not work for sustained healthy weight loss, people.

    The amount of money it costs to eat RELATIVELY healthy is insane. Just yesterday I went to the grocery store with my best friend for weekly shopping. I tend to eat a somewhat healthy vegetarian diet (I don't get enough protein and I do eat processed vegan meat substitutes) and she eats mostly processed foods and snacks. I limited myself to only meals and no snacks while she just shoved things she wanted into her cart. I spent $60 while she spent a little more than $30. It's ridiculous!!! Of course we have a weight problem in the US. I can hardly afford to feed myself because I choose to eat somewhat healthy.

I started to gain weight after I met my husband and at the age of 38 I am on the borderline between normal and overweight (170cm/70kg). I still feel I would like to loose about 10 kg to feel better. I decided in January 2021 to seek help for what I was beginning to believe was an ED. Since my early teens, I had pursued weight loss through diet and exercise as a means to control my body and improve my self-image. And boy was it ever a frustrating, exhausting, and all-consuming nightmare that no young person should ever have to experience. The game-changing information I learned early on in my recovery was that 1) Long-lasting weight loss is unattainable for over 95% of people and 2) People who have a history of dieting are likely to weigh more than non-dieters (weight, of course, mattered a lot to me at the time). Knowing these two things was enough to put me over the edge and begin questioning other things I had believed to be true because of diet culture. I can confidently say that the past year of therapy, and lots of anti-diet podcasts (Maintenance Phase ily), have helped me to gradually let go of self-imposed food restrictions and obsessive exercise habits. And above all, it's freed up so much brain space and time previously dedicated to impossible goals. January can be extremely difficult for many, and I hope that someone will read this and get the help that they need!

    I studied the Venus figurines for my masters degree and have continued on this theme into my current PhD, what you said is inaccurate. The Venus is mostly likley a representation of a heavily pregnant woman and a part of a firlitity rituary practices. We cant claim any cult connections due to lack of evidence. We do have evidence however, of other deprictions spread across Europe including rock engravings of pregnant women indicating to their stomach, in the same style and headweaar as the Venus of wilendorf. One in particular has a horn being used as a possible musical instrument and others dancing near the engraved woman, suggesting rituary practice or celebration. Pregnancies and childbirth were a huge and exciting thing in tribal society as it mostly is now, we have graves of children, especially twins, being discovered suggesting children were given personhood and were deeply loved within their tribes. We can not suggest fertility fetishism from the evidence we do have. It is far more likley to be celebration of new life or rights of passage for womanhood.

    Diets don't work. Most doctors and dieticians these days say that the best way to be healthy is to just eat everything in moderation and exercise regularly. You should only cut things out of your diet if you physically cannot eat them such as those who have allergies. I know veganism is on the rise but it is not sustainable long term. If we just make a few healthy swaps here and there for veggie and vegan options that is both better for our health and for the environment. Honestly a lot of stuff these days is just common sense.

I am from a very working class part of the UK. Many people live on the breadline or rely on the welfare state and work in very low paying minimum wage jobs. They simply do not have the financial means to adopt a vegan diet because fresh, healthy foods are expensive. until the US and UK economies stabilise and no people are living in poverty and all people have the money to afford fresh local produce then maybe veganism will become a viable and sustainable option for the planet but that's not the reality.

I know this because I was part of the movement and got sucked into the messaging but when I wanted to start losing weight for my health I was cast out and demonized as “fatphobic”. The body positive movement thinks obesity is like the colour of your skin, something you can’t change or something you have no control over. It is a toxic movement encouraging women (and men) to stay overweight while masquerading as an “all inclusive” one.

    Kate Moss smokes. Many smokers are thin due to nicotine suppressing their appetites.
    My late mother became obese in the last years of her life, from binge eating and yo-yo dieting. I had to avoid her attempts to sabotage my health, when I was younger. Twice she got me borderline obese with her habit of not giving me a sensible diet, she starved and overfed me. At one point she banned cheese from the fridge, and I ended up with a vitamin B defiency. I don't do diets, so I'm actually only slightly over weight and eat good quality food; ideal body image is damaging nonsense. I'm not ethnically meant to be skinny, because I'm descended from small wide women. I always had more of a figure than others. In my twenties I was naturally hourglass and had a large chest and hips, and today aged sixty I'm bellshaped. My clothing sizes are large, but because most of the other women who wear my size are obese, I can wear tight styles, they can't like a-line skirts and small shouldered tops, and most clothes are often over generous. I got trolled in a supermarket, by a health freak once, because unlike most people, I don't own a car and walk all year round, so in the winter I look three sizes bigger, because I wear layers to keep warm. This idiot also went on about being ecologically friendly, while standing there dressed in designer clothes, the worst offending brands of clothing for destroying the environment and also abusing workers. I'm very careful where I source my mostly mail order clothes from. The history of women's fashions and the industry around them, would be an interesting subject, particularly fashion cults.
