- Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords of Winger.
Reb Beach really made a splash on the scene in the late 1980s with the group Winger, which uncovered his impressive lead and tapping skills, but he also has a number of interesting and unusual rhythm-based ideas hiding up his sleeve and this lesson tackles a number of his inspiring ideas during his time playing with this popular band in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The examples/riffs from this lesson mainly include songs from their debut album, but you'll also find a section of a lost classic from their 1993 album 'Pull' along with a few other surprises.
For those that are influenced by Eddie Van Halen, guitarists such as Reb (and Vito Bratta from White Lion) help countless players see beyond the ideas and inspiration that Van Halen sparked in his monumental music, and exploring music from players like these can help you understand how to take the ball from "King Edward" and move into some uncharted territory of your design.
The ideas in this lesson include chart-toppers such as 'Seventeen,' and 'Madalaine,' along with a few lesser-known songs, including songs such as 'Time To Surrender,' 'Blind Revolution Mad,' and much more.
There's plenty of new and interesting things you can learn from studying a player as talented as Reb and this lesson will help you get a grip with some of this challenging chord-based rhythm guitar parts and songwriting ideas.

Reb Beach is a beast
Pull is such an under appreciated album. Might be their best album and no one really knows about it. Reb’s still sounding and playing great on the new Black Swan album too.
Tom Abraham Black Swan is great. Reb is still ripping the fretboard up.

Reb Beach is from the Pittsburgh area! My stomping grounds! Winger's "Heading for a Heartbreak" is an INTENSE masterpiece of a rock song!
My favorite Winger album is IV, which came out years after Pull, but the songwriting on that album is fantastic.

Vito was one of the best of that era right up there with Eddie,mr scary,warren di martini etc.etcAmazing guitarist.sadly he doesn't play anymore or or put music out.
You make the 17 riff look so easy. I've always struggled with it.
I always loved his tone in the verses of Madalaine and throughout Time to Surrender.
Cutting loose was my favorite Guitar Video in the 80-90s, its so inspirational with feeling and very musically
, compared to many other guitar videos in that aera that were mostly focused on technic and speed. Since then i'm a great fan of reb beach. Thanks for this video - lesson. Highly appreciated!
Right ! So much good stuff in cutting loose instructional ! That was Reb at his peak in my opinion from 88-93 Reb was right up there with vai and Satriani as far as innovative , exciting guitar playing his tapping is still incredible today and Monday has ever been able to replicate the smoothness he has when he taps . Very melodic player with plenty of fire thrown in too ! Great lesson as always Dave you rock man!

Reb Beach was a master. That old cover of Guitar magazine with Nuno, Reb, and Richie.. what a lineup right there.
I bought the self-titled debut on cassette while staying at my grandparents' house in Alabama back in 2008, along with the cassette of David Lee Roth's "Skyscraper". Bought "In The Heart of the Young" on CD at Half Price Books in 2009, followed by "Pull" in 2011. Saw them twice: once in 2014, the second time in 2016. Incredible live.
Just a month or so ago I leave a comment (on the Nuno post) about how much I learned about rhythm playing from Nuno and Reb and now... a "Chords of Winger" lesson? Are you stalking me, Dave? ;-) Reb, like Michael Schenker, is such an unappreciated genius. His solos are amazing but his rhythm playing is epic. I still play "Hungry", "Loosen Up" and "Black Magic" to warm up. Another great post. Stay safe everyone. Cheers.

Ahhh! Dave, I've been telling people for years how Beavis and butt-head managed to financially ruin one of my favorite bands. Reb's rhythm guitar work is full of fire....just the right amount of theoretical mojo mixed with really powerful instinctive execution.

Reb's riffs are amazing in all the ways, so difficult to play. George Lynch is very similar in difficult and amazing unusual riffs. Great video!!
I've been a HUGE Winger fan ever since they came out. I still go wild whenever I heard them on the radio. Yes my station stills plays them occasionally.

Great video. Reb is a killer guitarists. His rhythms are tricky. I love them though. Very cool stuff. He has a solo rock fusion album that is killer, and I'm not normally into that genre, personally. To each his own though.
I think Tebs rhythms are what really are much more fun to play.
Saw Winger open for Cinderella at an outdoor show. Bullet boys too at that show and it was loud and just killer. Loved that show. It was in like 91.

That would be a tough one ! Rebs tapping technique is completely unique to himself and I’ve never really seen any other players be able to replicate it and use it as a part of their phrasing and playing vocabulary the way Reb did . To me that’s what really set him apart from other players , was his ability to integrate it into his phrasing at any moment ... the smoothest tapper our there no doubt .. just pure smooth shred, so sweet sounding to my ears always loved Reb what a great player ! That being said David is absolutely incredible and he’s literally tackled so many great bands and guitarist and he makes it look so easy ! Thank you David for all you do in the music community, you’re so inspiring and educational. I’ve been a fan or your channel and work from the very beginning , rock on guys 🤘

3:02 - Back in the day, when I received the GFTPM issue in the mail (shown on the left side of the picture), it had the transcription to Seventeen in it. I couldn't get it down because either the transcription was bad (I can now check) or I couldn't get the hand position right on the fretboard to play it. The song, Madalaine - no problem! But Seventeen seemed impossible to me at the time.

Really cool I didn't particularly listen to Winger back in the day, Shame as I missed out on some really cool rhythm stuff. I'll have look at some more Reb Beech stuff and have a go at learning some bits of this episode.
listening to this made me think back to the stuff I was listening to at the time and Little angels immediately sprang to mind. Bruce John Dickinson would be a really cool guitarist for you to do a lesson on in my view. I remember spending hours tapping spread pentatonic things with a wah pedal trying to emulate his style! in fact I think that's why I bought one!
Reb Beach's early album The Fusion Demos is a must for any guitar player. And that Pull album...Kip's best writing for sure.
Agreed I always thought that the fusion demos were some of his best work and Pull is probably Wingers best album start to finish although I do love the debut also the guitar on the debut is just classic Reb breaking into the scene and strutting his stuff

Reb has amazing riff writting. I remeber hearing Twisted Sister "Love is for Suckers" and thinking it was very catchy and finding out it was Reb. I put him in a small category of Rock players that have unique riffs that are extremely fun to play.
Great video man. I love Reb's playin' since they released Winger in 1987. As a band they were second to none and in class of their own amongst the bands of their generation. Please do a Pat Thrall video.

I would even guess that Kip played the acoustic parts on it. There is a video on TH-cam where you can see Kip playing the parts to Spell I'm Under. I can't confirm it but it could be possible.. I caught a lot of shit over it, but because I played guitar back when those songs first came out when I was in jr high school, I knew Winger wasn't a joke like all my "It's Slayer or nothing" buddies had to say. I mean sure I loved Slayer and Metallica and Anthrax/Motorhead/Ozzy/etc, but I loved Winger's music too. I didn't give a damn what they thought. Reb is a wizard on the guitar, and the whole band was great. I admit Kip's dancing around stuff was sort of the "Rock Me Tonight" kiss of death, but anyway. I was also happy to hear you bring up Dangerous Toys! That first album was KILLER! Scott Dalhover is a PAINFULLY underrated, overlooked, even largely unknown guitarist from the end of the 80s/early 90s. I found him on TH-cam a few years ago under the name "MrTriskaidekaphobic" where he has a few guitar lessons from their old stuff. People should check him out. He's still a badass.
I thought it was funny when I first heard Twisted Sister's "Love is for suckers" album and was like wow they got a lot better at soloing until I found out that was actually Reb on some songs

When you started with "Madalaine" I was hoping you'd deconstruct the second guitar part that's clearly audible the third and fourth time through, on the original recording. It sounds like major chords, harmonizing with the original riff, and creates a really interesting minor-vs.-major dissonance. Thank you so much for this, anyhow. :) I bought a copy of their debut at a local record store at a deep discount, just before they actually started to hit. I knew they were going to be huge. As you said, despite all the insults and jokes, they were all monster talents once you looked past the teased hair and "whiter-than-white teeth."

Reb beach is underated
I can just hear Kip singing "Yeah..eah....eah. eah" when you started playing the acoustic intro to "Madeline"
I'm a big Grateful Dead guy obviously, and a lot of people don't know that Winger's drummer Rod Morgenstein played with jazz fusion GD cover band Jazz Is Dead for awhile. He actually came in after Billy Cobham left! If you've never checked out Jazz Is Dead, do yourself a favor and check em out!
They still play "Blind Revolution Mad" live I saw them 2 weeks ago live and they were awesome.
