Perfect analogy; "Brad was the finesse and Joe was the mess." I've always thought Brad was much more accomplished. But like you said, they complemented each other, which exemplified the Aerosmith sound.

My moment was "Back in the Saddle"--and an instant lifelong Aerosmith fan. Fast forward a few years and I read that same issue of Guitar Player with the transcription to "Dream On" and had that same lightbulb go on with those opening chords. I feel like we would get along great over beers! Great channel and great content.
I LOVE That pic of Joe looking out at the huge crowd (Day on the Green? Texas Jam? California Jam?) . Whichever show it was, that was the time they were absolutely HUGE and cruising to the moon at a million miles an hr. ! What a great band! I'll always say , for American Rock N Roll: it's Van Halen (original) and Aerosmith - 2 best bands of the Classic Rock era ....2 Greatest American Bands ever.......? I think so!
"Sick as a dog" and "No more no more" were my favorites as well as both of those albums! The opening riff/main riff on "Adams Apple" is great but the lead is killer! I think it's Brad Whitford playing that lead. Love to see you tackle that lead on one of your videos.

I grew up on old skool Smith and they were a HUGE influence when i was in middle school in the 70s learning how to play. I was lucky to grow up in the Northeast and see them live 20+ times in the 70s. THE dirty rock band that spawned all the other American dirty rock bands to follow. You should get into how Joe and Brad played alot of different parts simultaneously. Like Angus and Malcolm, you could listen to the guitar in the left speaker and learn the song one way then listen to the guitar in the right speaker and learn the same song another way. The Toys example u gave is perfect for that, u showed Joe's part, Brad plays a completely diff part during that riff, albiet a simpler part. Those lads showed me how to play the 'same' thing in diff positions to really open up the sound.
Mama Kin is one of my favorite Aerosmith songs. Been a fan ever since I listened to Aerosmith Classics Live. It was my first concert ever when I saw them at the New Haven Coliseum in CT back in '84 when I was 15.
Not sure how i missed this. Rocks is my favorite album from them. My favorite song is Nobody’s Fault. It’s just a great rock song and the beat gets me moving. Love the video.

I first got into Aerosmith at 14 and it was from an unlikely record for most folks -- Rock in a Hard Place. I had heard of Aerosmith previously but it was probably just Walk This Way. Luckily my brother had a friend with a huge record collection, and he dropped off Greatest Hits, I still preferred Rock In a Hard Place. But the dongs started to grow on me, and then he dropped off Toys, Rocks, Draw The Line and Live Bootleg. :D Rocks blew my mind in it's entirety. Back in the Saddle and Last Child are just that much more majestic in the framework of that album. In my old age I kind of prefer Draw The Line. Crank "I Wanna Know Why" and "Sight For Sore Eyes" if you're not familiar. For starters.

I concur regarding the 70's being the best of what those guys ever did. 😎 And a btw, I can recall the general look of guitar magazines' covers that had songs I spent time with in them, even if but the general colors and possibly who was on the cover. I have the ole GFTPM issue from the mid eighties that had 'Dream On' and 'Sweet Home Alabama' in it as the 2 I focused upon in that issue; but it was a light grayish background with Aerosmith on the cover. Earlier today I was trying to recall the cover of the issue that had Badlands' 'Winter's Call' in it and I hope I'm accurate tomorrow when I go to look for it. That's how I often locate the issue I want to review when I check 'em out again years later. 😎 And I'm adamant about arranging magazines and books much like a public library; go figure, the cover image memory is my card catalog. On Back In The Saddle, the way you were doing illustrating it is made me realize that perhaps George Lynch was inspired by that given the It's Not Love riff?

The picture on the intro to the lesson was from Live Bootleg I always though Joe looked so cool with all those guitars strapped on and the red Rich Bitch I used to look at that picture and think man that guy is kool great lesson on a bunch of songs oh yea Uncle Salty 🤘🤘👍

Do you think you could do one on maybe lesser-known bands like the Matthew Good Band or Splender? These bands are not nearly as widely known as most of these other bands but still have very cool and melodic songs
Thanks Dave! Aerosmith was THE band that taught me how to play. I'm glad you stuck to their 70s because IIMO that material is what matters anyway. Sadly their later albums just weren't up to the same level. Draw the Line had some good songs, but the production on it was horrible IMO.

Yeah Brad was definitely a schooled player. He even went to Berklee School of Music in Boston. Brad said that Joe Perry plays mostly by feel.
Combination off Rocks is a real gem no pun intended. They actually played live a few years ago out on tour.

Back in the Saddle can be done with an octave divider set an octave below. The main licks are played mostly on the higher strings.
