I used to think the ending was dark - but before too long I realised that it's absolutely a positive and optimistic ending - she watched her former self washed away and she sat intact looking into the future.
❤️❤️
The beach scene is an homage to a Joan Crawford movie from the 1940’s “Humoresque “ Joan’s character takes that teary walk on the beach and drowns herself because of a failed love affair. Thankfully stronger Madonna just washes away the bad vibes with the help of the sea. Another amazing look -her stunning makeup by Kevin Aucoin. Such a powerful and emotional song. Notice the ocean theme throughout the video: the wave effect, her pearl jewelry , even the light on the beach matches her pearl ring.
Thank you for sharing that with us! ❤️❤️ And yes, everything about this video is just visually stunning. ❤️
Madonna power of good bye is a fantastic song, the video is stunning, Madonna vocals are excellent ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤thanks lovely ladies for awesome reaction ❤❤❤❤❤❤ Madonna look very gorgeous love the black hair ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Beautiful song! Madonna always writes amazing ballads!❤One of my Mum’s favourite Madonna songs. I was 16 when this song came out and it gave me some valuable life lessons. The song/video still brings a lump to my throat. Just beautiful ❤
“There’s no more heart to bruise” - such a powerful verse.
Truly heartbreaking.
This is her best love song sensitive voice, beautiful strings and acoustic guitars.
Lyrical masterpiece.
“Ray of Light” album is her masterpiece!
“Like A Prayer” album is not far behind.
Please react to Madonna power of Goodbye.Live at VH1 fashion awards rehearsal. She sounds beautiful your love it
Madonna visiting the movies she loves again. This one draws heavily upon 2 films "The Thomas Crown Affair" (1968) Faye Dunaway and Steve McQueen's chess match and "Humoresque" (1946), Joan Crawford's watery fate. Simply beautiful images. XxX
Thank you for sharing those connections with us! ❤️❤️
Her greatest record!!!!!!!
one of THEE masterpieces. I'm 26 and I've always been aware of Madonna - after all I did grow up with Hung Up playing on MTV all the time lol however this song will always have a special place in my heart. it's the one that sealed the deal for me and made me a fan and made me realise how special this woman is and how much she did and keeps doing for us girls and for everyone else. lovely reaction as always :3
Aww, you're very kind - Thank you! ❤️❤️
And we can definitely see why this one sealed the deal for you! ❤️
That line," there's no more heart to bruise." 😭
Absolutely heartbreaking...
Her best era ❤😊
Everything about this song and the video is amazing! What she is trying to portrait is so relatable, as you said. She looks stunning with this dress and the dark hair ❤
Completely agree - She was just mesmerizing in this! ❤️
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) - Material Girl (1985)
Humoresque (1946) - The Power of Good-Bye (1998)
The difference between those movies and music videos :
At the end of those two music videos female characters take control of their lives
From day one to this day she s kept reminding us that we are in charge
❤️❤️
'Frozen' could also be seen as 'Open Your Heart 2.0'. 'Power of Goodbye' is another one of my faves on this masterpiece of an album. It's a feast for the ears.
‘Power of Goodbye’ is sort like ‘Take a Bow 2.0’
No words needed!
I love the song and the video. When i was a kid, i thought it was about suicide because of heartbreak but now i can look at it from another perspective - she is cleaning her soul and letting bad things go away.
Well said! ❤️❤️
Such a beautiful song and video. You guys should check out her performance of this track on the VH1 Fashion Awards. I think she sounds beautiful, but a lot of fans think it wasn’t a good vocal performance because of the way she sings, ‘higheRRRR’ lol. Thanks again for another great, heartfelt reaction video. Have a great weekend! 🥰😍
Aww, thank you so much! ❤️❤️ Hope you have a wonderful weekend too! ❤️
The part when they are playing chess and she slams the pieces out of the board it's an actual chess move called "kicking the table". You kick the table when you realize you're about to lose, and there's nothing you can do about it. So it's not only that you're about to lose, you already lost. There's nothing left to do, that's it, you're playing a game that's already ended even if you keep playing. So before your opponent checkmates you, you kick the board. So that's a metaphor for their relationship. And I think this song is about the peace that realization can bring you. The peace and freedom of accepting the facts, and letting it go. Because it's all about letting go. Remember in "Deeper and Deeper" when she was carrying the balloons with her, representing her demons an idols, well, this is about letting them go. Letting go your backpack of frustrations and regrets that a relationship didn't work. And accepting the reality. Because your demons don't haunt you, it's you that carries them with you, but they actually wanna be freed, and it's your responsibility to say goodbye to them.
There's a song on the album called "To have and not to hold" where she repeats a line in Sanscrit from the song "Shanti/Ashtangi" that goes "Ahahu purusakaram" which means "realizing you want something you can't have". This song is about that realization.
And so then, when she walks to the beach and goes into the ocean, she then re-emerges on the shore on the other side. This is about a Buddhist concept called "crossing the river" and it's about diving into the river, swimming to the bottom, and then re-emerging on the other side, and what it does is cleaning you, washing away your demons and your regrets, and allowing you to have a new fresh start on the other side. This is a topic on this album, and it's very clearly depicted in the trilogy of the first 3 songs: Drowned World - Swim - Ray of Light. She starts in the deep water, in the darkness of a fake world (Drowned World), then she swims to the bottom of the ocean and crashes to the other shore, washing away all that (Swim), and emerges from the water into the sunlight, feeling like she just came home from a life-changing journey (Ray of Light)
And water is an element that is present throughout the album as a symbol of healing. You'll see that in the next video and how she uses a bag full of water as a symbol of her daughter as a healing element in her life, as we saw in the video for Drowned World.
Unbelievable. Your comment is brilliant. Thanks
Wow! Such a great explanation of this album.
Brilliant !
I love Emily and Brenda, but also I’m here because people like you explains so well aspects that I didn’t realize (even considering myself a huge fan of her 😅)

The Celebration tour starts with "Nothing really matters"...
@@MariaGomezlamas-gv2si Dont spoil!!

Me personally one of her best ever songs. That’s saying something. Her advanced Vocal training for Evita did her wonders for Ray Of Light album.

Even better than Frozen to me
A beautiful song and Madonna looks breathtaking in this video!
This is one of my faves. I think my fave off this album is coming up. Nothing Really Matters. The song Little Star is about Lourdes.
this is such a beautiful ballad.
Madonna really was a big fan of the guy in the video, and she got him for this role of course….just like her relationship with Banderas, he was her crush too….
Hi Ladies
Again your analysis of the song is so insightful and I learn so much from your wisdom and soothing voices. I agree, I think everyone who has experienced a broken heart knows the pain of letting go and the courage to move forward.
I truly look forward to your next reaction each time.
And like you said, the song is beautiful and this video showcases her stunning beauty.
Aww, thank you so much! ❤️❤️ And thank you for going on this journey with us - We're so glad you're here! ❤️

An exquisite video for an absolutely beautiful song. Madonna looking absolutely stunning! The guy playing chess with her was the actor from the movie Practical Magic. He played Nicole Kidman‘s abusive boyfriend.
Terrific review ladies.
I loved your comments!
Have a great day!
One more video, then it’s showtime!!♥️💃🏼🪩
Aww, you're always so sweet - Thank you! ❤️❤️ And thank you for the background on the actor - He was great in this!
Can you believe it?! We're almost there!! 🎉
Have a wonderful weekend! ❤️
❤
My fav M song ❤❤❤
I love this song so much. It’s heartbreaking and empowering at the same time
Perfect description! ❤️❤️
I said there was beauty, didn't I? Madonna looks stunning. From the beginning of the clip we only have the effects of the waves in the parts where she is alone in the house, as if her spirit was still in the house without knowing how to say goodbye. This video is based on a scene from one of Madonna's favorite actresses, Joan Crawford, in 1946, I'll leave the link at the end
You were definitely right (as always!). ❤️❤️
Love how she captured that scene from the movie so well in this video. ❤️
Strangeness and Madonna art? Sounds very intriguing!
Lots of love to you. ❤️😘
Love U girls, always a pleasure to see u guys . ❤. ❤. ❤. ❤@@OurAnxiousReactions
In the mid to late 1990s, fashion photographer Matthew Rolston directed so MANY beautifully photographed music videos.
His primary genre at that time was R&B.
He did TLC's Creep and Red Light Special
music videos, En Vogue's Never Gonna Get It,
and Giving Him Something He Can Feel music videos, as well as a long list of other R&B oriented music videos.
He also directed Salt N' Pepper's
What A Man video featuring En Vogue.
Rolston tends to set a dominant
color for each music video he directs.
I kid you not, I WISHED he would do a
music video with Madonna, with her hair
being black, and the music video's
dominant color being green.
He photographed her for the 1986
Rolling Stone magazine spread she did.
The Marlene Dietrich, "Goodbye and Good Luck" inspired photo from that issue is one Madonna's personal favorites.
Her Bedtime Story music video era
came and went with no Rolston
collaboration. Much to my surprise,
In 1998, Rolston did in fact collaborate
with Madonna for The Power of Goodbye,
where she had black hair, with a dominant Pthalo green music video color!
I recall literally GASPING when
i saw the video for the first time,
and his directing credit in the info
caption. My wishing finally paid off!!
I figured you would both enjoy this
video. So glad you did!
Wow! You have an incredible ability to manifest wishes!! Love that story. ❤️❤️
My dream…is that she’ll sing this on the celebration tour!!! This would be a great song to swap out for rain/take a bow. As much as I’ve been looking forward to rain…I really think this would be a fantastic song to throw in on the final leg of the tour!! The Atlanta fans ALL agree!!!
This album is such a gem!
This would be wonderful to see at Celebration! ❤️❤️
Love your réaction ❤
Aww, you're very kind - Thank you! ❤️❤️
First word: WOW!!! ❤❤❤
❤️❤️
Love your analysis, just two smart women we love to watch and listen to. Madonna would appreciate your intellectual analysis of her words and art.
Aww, you're incredibly sweet - Thank you! ❤️❤️
Hello again ladies, I went back and had a look at a couple of articles that focused on the making of the video and the director is a very famous photographer called Matthew Rolston. Madonna has done this a few times before, where she'll take somebody who is famous for one thing and plead with them to do another thing and it always turns out something special. He actually said that Madonna made them recut the entire video as he'd chosen the shots where she looked the most beautiful but she didn't feel there was enough emotion in her face in the shots he used. She made them redo the entire edit because it was more important to her to express despair than to look beautiful!!!
Great story - Thank you for sharing that with us! ❤️❤️
Some scenes in the video, in particular when Madonna walks and cries on the beach and meets the man with the dog, were inspired by a scene played by Joan Crawford in Jean Negulesco's 1946 film Hopelessly.
Other influences can be seen in the 1968 film The Thomas Crown Affair, starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway
Thank you for sharing those film references with us! ❤️❤️
HI Ladies!
Madonna's lover in the video is played by Croatian actor Goran Višnjić, who was selected by the singer after she saw his acting in the British film Welcome to Sarajevo (1997).
He was also in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Practical Magic, the TV shows This is US, ER, etc. This video opened the door for him to Hollywood.
I literally just watched a movie called The Accursed last night. He was in that also.
How many days until your concert? Can't wait to hear your review.
Have a blast. ❤❤
Mark.
Thank you for sharing the info about the actor in this video - He was great in it! ❤️❤️
Two days left!! Can you believe it?! ❤️🎉
Love the song and the video, she definitely reinvented herself with this album and she always kept pushing herself with her music and videos by keeping changing her style
Love this song! Powerful lyrics. Thank you for posting!
👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you! ❤️❤️
when I was 15 I used to play this song to my mom who was going through her divorce from my Father, and one day she told me that song was helping her heal... now I am 31 and I had to walk away from a toxic relationship where we both were holding each other back and we were hurting ourselves by being in each other's lives... and this song has come back to my experience to help me heal this time around... that's the power of good-bye, the power of Madonna ❤
Thank you for sharing those personal experiences with us. ❤️❤️ How wonderful that you were able to help your mom through a difficult experience with a song that would one day help you as well... ❤️
@@OurAnxiousReactions thank you for your reaction, it’s what made me realise of this circle of life 🥰 I hope you ladies enjoyed the concert! I sure did back in November 🤩🥳😘
I have LOVED watching your reactions! Been a fan since 1984/85 and seeing some these which are first time listens/views for you is SO exciting. Makes me wish I could start the journey all over again. ❤ I am curious, when is your Celebration Tour date? I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on this tour. Also, I was wondering: you may know this, but Madonna has an interest in astrology, and hearing how you both really empathize with her messages and work, it made me think to ask when are your birthdays? What are your signs? :)
Aww, you're very sweet - Thank you so much! ❤️❤️
We're seeing Celebration on April 1st. Just two more days - Yay! 🎉
And our astrological signs are Emily - Pisces, Brenda - Gemini.
Spot on Emily for stating this hardens to the lyrics of Frozen about "heart is not open", in the album tracklist Power of Goodbye follows the track Frozen.
Thanks to this song I became a fan. Firstly because i was in 4th grade at the time of song's release aa single and a future neighbor of mine got the album because he loved the song, do when when became neighbors I was going through his CD collection and I saw the 'Ray of Light' album disc, I asked him to borrow it. And instantly started buying her albums. To date this album is my favorite of hers and her best critically, my favorite song of hers is 'To Have And Not Hold' which is an album track which follows 'Power of Goodbye'.
As always thank you both for another beautiful reaction.
Aww, thank you so much! ❤️❤️
And what a great story of discovering this album and becoming a fan - Love that! ❤️
Always looking forward to your reactions over and over. This one is no different! Wonderful song and video! Such a chameleon!!
Aww, you're so kind, as always - Thank you! ❤️❤️
Great song and video. Just a curiosity: the scenes showing Madonna walking alone on the beach is an homage to a Joan Crawford ( from the 1946 film Humoresque ).
Thank you for sharing that homage with us! ❤️❤️
Someone mentioned for you both to please react to “nothing really matters” before you watch the show. I second that!!!!! You will be happy you did!!😃😃😃
❤️❤️
God, this video has been on repeat lately. I went through a breakup recently. This video just hits me right in the feels. I cry watching this every time. The power of goodbye. What more can I say. 🥺🥺
Breakups are so hard - Sending lots of love and healing to you. ❤️❤️
@@OurAnxiousReactions They really are. Thank you so much! ❤️❤️🫶🫶 Sending love right back!
When I referenced the Joan Crawford movie that it pays tribute to, Joan Crawford does take her life in the movie where with Madonna I think it represents like the water washing over her cleansing her of her past and allowing her to be reborn again -my take
Love your take! ❤️❤️
❤your so insightful and sensitive analysis of this song. She worked on the ROL album project in 1997; it was released on February 22, 1998. I’m guessing perhaps her sentiments in writing this song coincided with her ending her relationship with Carlos Leon in 1997. Rick Nowels who co/wrote this song with Madonna described his collaboration with her as “a career changing experience”. He was awed by her lyricism he praised as “deep, poetic and intelligent…confessional in nature…a meditation..a beautiful poem..”.
Her look and creative process during this era is my fave. There’s something ethereal, classic and deeply spiritual about it. Perhaps influenced by the wisdom she gained from delving deeply into Buddhism and practicing Ashtanga yoga daily. I know of no other female musical artist whose messaging and impact is as powerful and transcendent as Madonna.
Aww, thank you - That's very kind of you to say. ❤️❤️
"There’s something ethereal, classic and deeply spiritual about it." Love your description of this era in her career - Perfectly said! ❤️❤️
Loved your reaction to this video and you're so close to seeing the show! I'm so excited for you both :-) this song always gets to me as well as another track that was never given a video, Time stood still. That one also touches on a similar subject and it's so beautiful. Can't wait to hear your review!
Aww, you're so sweet - Thank you! ❤️❤️
Can't wait to hear Time Stood Still when we do our deeper dive into this album. ❤️
Besides all wonderful music on Ray of Light, my favourite is Candy Perfume Girl, it's sexy sleek punk electro .
She was stunning here. Beautiful song and video. As others have said, you must react to Nothing Really Matters before your concert!! *wink wink*
❤️❤️😉
If you can, please react to Nothing Really Matters before your concert experience.
Great reaction again 💚
Happy Easter to you both from Australia 🇦🇺🐰
Thank you so much! ❤️❤️ And Happy Easter to you too!
Oh Boy! This song always makes me cry now because of my brother’s suicide but M sure does this song so beautiful and proud and amazing! Stunning Video also.
Thank you ladies, I needed tissues too.🥲❤️
We're so sorry for the loss of your brother. Sending you so much love and the biggest hugs. ❤️❤️
so emotional.... thank you for this moment. With kindness, from France ♥
Thank you! ❤️❤️ Lots of love to you!
Omg. I’ve dreamed of this
❤️❤️
Love this metaphor comparing playing chessboard game and a relationship
Madonna was a staggering beauty.
The song ended in suicide. As much as I love a ballad...this is a song about failing. I kinda love it.
Ladies, you are such a class! It was an absolute pleasure to watch your video. Subscribed already. And also - this song (after Like A Prayer and Frozen) is my absolute favorite.
Aww, you're very sweet- Thank you so much! ❤️❤️ And thank you for going on this journey with us!
It’s funny you made a parallel between frozen and this song, because in the album they’re paired together, tracks 9 and 10. Back in 2002 the demo of Power of Good bye leaked on the internet and we got to hear some extra lyrics that - funnily enough - is what Emily says: walk away. These words are repeated between the verses. This is also one of those songs Madonna doesn’t want to include on tours because she’s afraid people will think it’s a farewell concert
Wow - Thank you for sharing that those songs are paired together on the album (and also the words from the demo)! Wild. ❤️❤️
Great Reaction! Madonna grew out her hair and natural hair color because she and Goldie Hawn were originally cast in the Harvey Wienstien film version of Chicago that never came to fruition in 1998/1999.
Thank you so much! ❤️❤️
And thank you for sharing the info about Goldie Hawn and Chicago - Very interesting! ❤️
I was waiting for your reaction on this. ❤️❤️❤️
❤️❤️
❤❤
Powerful and beautiful song.
Madonna conveys emotions perfectly here.
Great reaction as always ❤❤
Aww, thank you! ❤️❤️
I was waiting for this reaction. It’s my all time favorite Madonna ballad. The music video was inspired by the film “Humoresque” starring Joan Crawford. If you search Madonna Joan Crawford you can see which scenes from the movie were re-created for the music video. The actor in the video is Goran Višnjić from E.R. The casting was perfect! For me this song is a masterpiece and Madonna looked beyond stunning. ♥️
Thank you for sharing that background with us! ❤️❤️ And we can definitely see why it's your favorite Madonna ballad - So beautiful! ❤️
She inspired by Joan Crawford Humoresque film from 1947. The look with the pearl ring and dress is from Tamara de Lempicka Portrait of Madame M ... take a look. Make up by Steven Aucoin 🧏🏻♂️
Thank you for sharing that with us! ❤️❤️ We looked up the portrait and saw the ring - Great connection!
Hi Ladies I truly enjoy your reactions of Madonna vids .. I'm going to see her next week on the 7th in Miami with my best friend. Which show are you guys going to be attending ?
Aww, thank you so much! ❤️❤️
That's so exciting - Have a wonderful time at your show!! We're seeing her on the 1st in Atlanta. 🎉
@@OurAnxiousReactions she's the best live you two are going to have a wonderful time .. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on it . 😊
very classy, very sensual, the eyes are perfect, beautiful, mysterious
this album is sooo good but which album of hers isnt? This was an immediate favorite when i first listened to the album. But alot of the best songs didnt even get to be singles so you know those 4 Grammys were definitely deserved. She looks beyond stunning her. This song was HUGE here in Germany, it came out over half a year after the album dropped, the album was multi platinum already but the Power Of Goodbye brought it back to #1 of the German albumscharts for 2 weeks and months into the top ten again. The single peaked at #4 here as well and went Gold. It was such a great time for her everywhere in the world, she had the commercial success and the critical acclaim that she had deserved since the beginning but had to especially fight for after Erotica.
The song calms me down, its once again so pleasant, her vocals are everything, the video is pretty, her words are meaningful, shes the complete artistic package.
❤️❤️
The man in the video is Goran Visnjic, Dr Luka of E. R.
Madonna never sounded as good as she did on this album. This is Madonna and her best.
Thank you for the info on the actor! ❤️❤️
@@OurAnxiousReactionsI have to say that I really like your views about Madonna and her career. You really know how to separate her public persona image and the artist. You do it with so much respect and admiration and that is something that not a lot of people do. Thank you for that and keep the videos coming. I really enjoy your work.
Aww, thank you! Big hugs to you! ❤️❤️
Fun fact also…. She told the director you’re making me look too good lol
I'm surprised this song hit #11 on Billboard's Hot 100. It's definitely not a mainstream ballad. I think if she had taken out some of the computerized blips and sounds, and made it a little more orchestral, or like Rain, but still keep it in the spirit of the Ray of Light album, it would have been Top 5 and become a Madonna classic.
That wouldn’t have been as good. Popularity be damned.
I wouldn’t change a thing…

One of my all time favorite Madonna videos, and the video, especially the visuals of Madonna walking along the beach, was inspired by the Joan Crawford movie Humoresque.
Wow - Thank you so much for the link! ❤️❤️ She captured the movie scene perfectly (but, thankfully, with a different ending).
I enjoy your videos, thanks ladies.
I hope you react to " skin " or " sky fits heaven" from this album.
Aww, thank you! ❤️❤️
