  • Miniaturist Journal 40. I visited Museum House van Gijn in Dordrecht, the Netherlands, where, apart from the beautiful historic house and interiors, the 18th century cabinet dollshouse of Agnes Maria Clifford (1739-1828) is on display. The attic of the museum houses even more roomboxes, miniatures, dolls and toys.
Miniaturist Journal is a record of my activities, experiences, thoughts and observations in vlog form, all relating to miniatures.

You were right, that contraption in the kitchen is a mouse trap. I cheated and sent my cousin who lives in Dort to ask at the museum but it was fun guessing before hand.

Oh thank you Coby!! How wonderful you asked your cousin! And how kind of your cousin to go and ask the museum what it was! Thank you both 😃

I love every single room. Breathtaking. The copper is incredible and then dolls and Reception Room, especially the tapestries. So much history captured. Thanks to all who have created this and shared it. Dreaming of Holland in Oklahoma, US, Barb.

The copper lamp is just that! My mother used to have a full size one, of about 30-35cm tall, all made of copper even the reservoir. We tried it once, but it doesn’t give off much light. You could get a bit more light by pulling out the wick with tweezers, but there’s a fine line between light and black smoke even though we used a modern fragrant oil. Love the stories you have for all of the inhabitants!

Thank you Idske! In hindsight I should have noticed them on the wall of the big kitchen as well, there were several there and only I noticed them later when I finished the video. I found out that these oil lamps are called 'snotneus'. Fun name isn't it? I can imagine the smoke coming from there. I cannot imagine having to live with such dim light from candles and these oil lamps etc. I guess it would mean going to bed early 😉

I like how these doll’s house’s look 👀:”worn’,or:”lived in!’It make’s the miniature more real, more authentic! And,I don’t know what the board was on the chair?Maybe,it was for slicing some cheese 🫕 and bread? But,I’m guessing, here! These miniatures are very lovely 🥰 to look at!A feast for the eyes!

I agree, they are lovely! I had a quick look at the video to see what the board was you are talking about, but I didn't see it. Where did you see it? In the cabinet dolls' house?

Yeah,I guess,it was in there? My dad made;a boxed miniature of a castle 🏰 for me,when I was sixteen, and fresh out of Junior High 🏫 School.I still have it on my top book 📕 shelf. It’s now:”a memory of what my dad made! And,I love ❤️ the ‘half of a castle!”I finally, furnished by making my own furniture, and adding other miniature item’s,like:hand sewn pillow’s.I’m glad, that it’s been done since;2004!Which,I believe, was the spring of that year?

Hello Josje...the lamp of koper in the miniature kitchen is indeed an oillamp...it's called a " snotneus" .

Thank you, Marjolein! I just found out myself that it was called that. Such a funny name, I guess maybe it was prone to dripping. 😉

Many thanks for taking us on this field trip with you to such a beautiful home. I live in the US and haven't been fortunate enough to visit Holland so a peek into the beauty is appreciated.

The soaring ceilings in the Big House kitchen along with the super tall windows I found impressive but the reception room with its wrap around tapestries is AWESOME!
Loved the doll's house and the roomboxes in the attic -such a wonderfully preserved resource to find yourself surrounded by.
