How a LiDAR Drone Maps the Bare Earth through trees!

  • This week we test Drone LiDAR and its ability to see through trees! Fly with me as I explore an Ozark forest to demonstrate the effectiveness of using an unmanned aircraft system with LiDAR to create a bare earth model. The challenge is real as I tackle the dense Ozark foliage to determine what lies beneath the tree canopies and brush.

    Hi, just wanted to share how much I appreciated this video! I have a DJI Phantom 4 Pro enroute (first drone) because I want to map out several of my properties...~and this video gave me some really good things to research. Much appreciated!

    hi there im nathan and im from Trinidad and Tobago ..... so HI FROM TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO . I have some questions concerning the use of drones in land surveying . Im 18 years old and now about to start my degree in geomatics and im pretty new to the entire land surveying scene and my first questions is other than volumetric data collection and topographic map use can liDAR or even drone technology be used in cadastral and boundary surveying and can you (if possible ) talk about like a list of application for drones in surveying( liDAR or otherwise) and where can one go to learn and train to use drones for this field . I wanna learn drone surveying because in my country is 10 years back in technology and i would like to be one of the person to introduce this sort of technology Also(if possible) can u talk about what you do in general like overally as a job. So yh . And apart from the question i must commend you on the quality of your videos its truly top notch and i love it . I hope your channels grows to insane numbers because more ppl need to see this content its truly amazing

    I'm surprised that in all the comments, nobody asked if the lidar surface was tested for vertical accuracy. The surfaces look nice but are they? I see spikes and piles and can't be sure if the ground classification totally worked. Please also speak to how much manual editing of the classified point cloud was required to remover erroneous ground classifications.

    Great tech but still a lot of noise in that model. Would be nice to see some independent verifications of the actual ground surface in that area.

      @IndianaDrones  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah definitely a lot of noise in this heavily vegetated area. Most of that is low laying vegetation on the ground. We have a runway that is very very very flat that we are going to test all the equipment on. Over 200 survey points!

      Think you're talking about bathymetric lidar which uses 532nm wavelength laser, these lasers use around 1100nm laser. Need more power also in bathymetry because the pulse needs to fight through the water and back, much tougher medium.

    Yeah that's the big issue we're having at my work. The drone is not lidar and the vegetation creates a terrible surface model that we can't work with. Love this though. Well done.

    Wow I know this is 3 years ago, but your statement has not been CORRECTED "How a LiDAR Drone Maps the Bare Earth through trees!" The earth for instance is not bare in a forest ,the bare earth is covered in fallen leaves branches etc, furthermore you imply Lidar sees THRU' vegetation ie in total. It is true it can get thru' voids. However Vegetation still has to be removed in the model and contours have to be extrapolated between reflected points. Lidar is great if correctly applied

    You are still incorrect, Lidar cannot SEE THROUGH TREES, it certainly cannot determine bare earth. If you are standing in a forest and and can see light shining , that is when Lidar can measure. As to Bare earth, sorry, forests are full of detritus from fallen leaves, branches and undergrowth. The perception that LIDAR can see thru vegetation is putting people on a expensive path. Lidar is useful for planning in forested areas , followed up by photogrammetry which is more accurate after clearing. Some Lidar is very good on structures , by this I mean Terrestrial Lidar. Also we use terrestrial in vegetated areas, under canopy, which is very effective in eliminating trees.

    • @IndianaDrones
      @IndianaDrones  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We've tested this against survey grade ground control points and check points... this is consistently better than photogrammetry. And yes, we know how LiDAR works!
