I'm shocked that Netflix let them get away with this. A couple of years back, a couple of TikTokers tried to make a Brigerton musical, and Netflix sued them because they claimed it was official when it wasn't, thus infringing their copyright. There's also the fact that Netflix does actual Brigerton themed balls, and this event could have made people believe that this is how official Brigerton balls are run. Brigerton is a very popular show and one of the very few shows that Netflix hasn't cancelled after season one, so it's a shocker they haven't done anything yet despite this deserving a copyright suit.
This was so disappointing - seeing so many people dressed up and stunning showing up to an absolute mess is depressing. To anyone who did attend: y'all slayed.
Since I don't care about streaming services, I didn't even know this was supposed to be based on something. I just saw the news stories about how much of a disaster it was and assumed people paid like $200 max. To hear that some might have potentially paid $1,000+ is ridiculous
The ticket prices are absolutely abhorrent. I went to a three day convention in my home town this past weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) and the price for the entire three day pass was only about $60. I had a lovely time. Also my jaw dropped when you scrolled down after discussing the main ticket tiers and revealed the THOUSAND DOLLAR TICKET TIER. Absolutely insane.

We know the fans dont hate it so...the sexism and terrible treatment of a girl doing her job is insane to me. Especially because many bridgerton fans are thirsty thirsty people. Ive seen your edits you guys. Insane.
If her costume was more of a regency/historical costume I think some people would have gotten a kick out of it. Even more so if she danced to the soundtrack. Obviously none of that was in her control and she had no time to prepare and even the event hosts had no vision for it and it was a last minute choice.
I was going to comment that lol Those people are complaining about this woman who was just doing her job, she was a victim too. And I know Detroit is in America, but as a Brazilian, seeing a woman's butt is that big of a deal in America??
Amen! I have never warched the show, but an exotic dancer could have worked for Regency era if they bothered to give her a costume. Hell, they could have even hired belly dancers and theme the ball like an era style Orientalist event. Seriously sad that woman is catching shit because of the event holders own bad planning.

The actors are all students and it’s in a literal church basement, but god it’s amazing compared to this. Like people look forward to it every year, and it’s literally cast by students
Honestly, I think that with social media people get way too confident when it comes to businesses and especially event organizations, it’s so easy to go to a fancy gala and say “I can do that!”
wow i thought maybe they based their pricing on the netflix event without realizing how much more the netflix event provided for that money. little did i know their cheapest ticket was like triple the netflix one... that's just shameful
it makes sense, though, to be honest, from a business perspective. a smaller company would have to charge more because they're paying out of pocket for so much. they have no resources at their disposal. netflix has everything and can get everything (and has connections and is hosting multiple events, so they can get bulk pricing on things and have leverage when it comes to renting venues, etc.) as someone who goes to a lot of small conventions, the prices all exceed what netflix is charging for their event, and don't have nearly as many bells and whistles. but they're organized by very small groups who have to pay full prices for everything in order to create the experience they do offer.
@@fishbowlheretic that’s true, but even so, if you’re going to be charging big convention prices for a single night of entertainment, i feel like you should at least have more than one violinist, you know? like even if it’s a small business, i would still expect a lot more for this price, and/or for them to be very up front about what you’re getting for your money.
@@plushdragonteddy oh, no, i agree with you there. i'm not saying what they offered by any means reflected the money that went into it. i do think they likely had more to offer before they lost the original venue, and likely all of their deposits. the price tag for the event they provided is by no means fair or reasonable, small business or not. my only point was even if they managed to reach netflix levels for their event, they still never would have been able to offer it at netflix's price because of who they are.
i feel everyone who worked that event got fucked over, the DJ, the dancer, the vendors because they don't chose anything and judging by how everything was i imagine they weren't told much about the event

That was the first red flag tbh, why would Netflix offer it so cheaply but some random third party company charged upwards hundreds to thousands of dollars? I understand Netflix has resources, but yeah next time people really should take a minute before booking with third party like this.. Never gonna blame the victims though, but just be careful, scams are everywhere.
I legit love your videos, but we have very different definitions of what constitutes "a pretty good apology." It basically amounted to, "we couldn't afford what we promised so we were forced to scam you, we're the real victims here."
There's a bunch of people that did the math and this company made an absolute killing from cheaping out with that event. I don't doubt that they were mismanaging budgets and planning but they definitely need to get hit with that lawsuit. Once you plan an event and it bombs this badly, it's still on you to take responsibility for failing to provide a service.
I don't think it was a scam, but I agree with Izzy. If it was from the actual company, therefore admitting liability for the incident and risking being shut down, it would have been understandable. There's not much you can say to people if you can't say "we'll give you refunds". I also don't think they made money. My guess is that the debacle with the original venue stripped them of cash. They probably had a massive deposit on that venue that they just lost due to poor planning.

Doing food for that many people is a nightmare. Should've just done drinks and light snacks. Who wants to eat a huge meal at a big dance in a fancy dress anyway?
Someone in my family used to put on events for hundreds of people, and he managed the catering. It's tough, it's a very particular skillset and a lot of micromanaging, but it's possible. But, yeah, though the official events had a dinner, snacks might've made more sense for this baby version of the official events.
It's starting to look intentional to me. After the Glasgow disaster, they had a Bluey event at some restaurant in Las Vegas, and the "character" was just some guy in Bandit pajamas. Then there's this. At least the Bluey event was an honest mistake by a small business that didnt expect people from other states to show up. This situation, however, seems purposeful.
I hope that Netflix takes the huge marketing opportunity and plans an official Bridgerton Ball in Detroit and offers a discount to anyone who got duped at this ...fiasco.

I super appreciate the work you do on these niche events and funny little pop culture memories in your videos. Love the work! Also, look on point as usual!
The thing about elegant balls is that you cannot host one without being willing to spend tons of money. Otherwise patrons will point out everything they find wrong with it. This point is even immortalized in many event organizers journals and diaries through the last 5 centuries
I know a community that does that practically for free, but: the venue is provided by the university, so is the music equipment (no musicians of course). They DIY the decor and provide very simple snacks, nothing particularly fancy, and the event is very explicitly a university ball
It is giving Bridgerton! ❤ Also, you are basically the only creator whose coverage of this I actually felt like watching, I appreciated your nuanced thoughts on the performer, I agree she got a lot of unnecessary flak and the producers of the event are pretty on blame for putting her in that situation.

They should have given that dancer a fun frilly themed outfit!! I think it could have worked if they had just kept playing classical music and gave her a themed (but still able to be pole-danced in) costume!!
I went to the lolita (the JFashion) version of this. It was advertised as a huge event with special guests and designers, but we were crammed into this one room the size of a basketball court and there was a belly dancer for unknown reasons. Basically one person worked on it and was in way over her head.
I was under the impression that the dancer wasn’t a stripper- like pole dancing is an actual art form. I just think that (at least in the US), pole dancing is so often associated with exotic dancers that people automatically assumed she was a stripper. That may have been the event planner’s intention, considering the outfit she was told to wear I mean I can’t say for certain if she’s a stripper or not because I don’t know, but I can see how people got that impression (despite her never.. doing the stripping part of stripping) Either way, she doesn’t deserve hate at all, I just wanted to explain why I thought the rumors of her being a stripper might be a bit conflated ok thanks for listening lol
of course it's still art. it's really impressive. but a bikini doesn't fit the vibe. Her say swinging in a hoop, or curtains, doing areal work would have been great. Which this performer also does. it's just more expensive and not every location would be suitable, as you need to rig it so she can actually do it. also possibly have another person that can like "man the rope". lifting and lowering the hoop.

I kinda laughed when I seen the cheap led bluetooth speaker. Them things have no class at all and often don't sound good and are not meant for large spaces like that. Looks like they could not even hire a professional dj either.
The cynic in me is very ammused that people in historically innacurate costumes & hair styles are having a highly inauthentic experience at a historically innacurate period event.
I’ve run a fair few events and know a lot of other people who do, and what this sounds like to me is that they’d run large events before that were relatively cheap and they could probably get sweetheart deals due to them being what people in events euphemistically refer to as "community-driven events" - artists etc performing for exposure, little decor needed, sometimes even sweetheart deals from venues etc. For this kind of event you need to pay everyone and you need to pay them well: the artists aren’t performing under their own names and the event itself is the brand. They probably hadn’t run an event that they couldn’t cheap their way through before and didn’t realise the ridiculous amount of cost and effort required to do decor for a one-off event. One of my events recently just had a bunch of rugs, mattresses and sheets on the floor in one of the areas and even that tiny amount of "decor", for an event with only 150ish people, complicates logistics a bunch. We spent weeks discussing exactly where we'd put them, what our shoe policy was, how we'd clean everything, contacted the venue to make sure we could have the bar be glassless so people could take their shoes off in the comfy area. My friends run an event where they basically set up a pop-up professional-looking nightclub in the basement of an art space and it takes them like 2 12 hour days to set up and then another 12 hour day to tear down, and that’s when they can have a more "use what we have" attitude. They only run 2 or 3 events a year because of all the planning required. For such a specific aesthetic that’s hard to thrift, where you’re not even planning to run the event more than once, you can’t treat it like you’d treat running a local music festival or whatever. They should have known how badly out of their depth they were when the first venue turned them down.
Ngl i feel so bad for the pole dancer, i know she might got payed but it must have felt so embarrassing to dance alone in the empty ass massive ball room lmao

I was going to comment that lol

wow i thought maybe they based their pricing on the netflix event without realizing how much more the netflix event provided for that money. little did i know their cheapest ticket was like triple the netflix one... that's just shameful
it makes sense, though, to be honest, from a business perspective. a smaller company would have to charge more because they're paying out of pocket for so much. they have no resources at their disposal. netflix has everything and can get everything (and has connections and is hosting multiple events, so they can get bulk pricing on things and have leverage when it comes to renting venues, etc.)
as someone who goes to a lot of small conventions, the prices all exceed what netflix is charging for their event, and don't have nearly as many bells and whistles. but they're organized by very small groups who have to pay full prices for everything in order to create the experience they do offer.

I legit love your videos, but we have very different definitions of what constitutes "a pretty good apology."
It basically amounted to, "we couldn't afford what we promised so we were forced to scam you, we're the real victims here."
it took so much effort to even listen to izzy's reading of it, it was such a cartoonishly textbook scummy business apology 😐
Izzy is an influencer and TH-camr at the end of the day.
To be fair standards for apologies from organisers is at an all time low (see, glasgow willy wonka ai generated apology)

Cause its meant to be like a regency ball or party in which typically there would be dinner then dancing and drinking
Someone in my family used to put on events for hundreds of people, and he managed the catering. It's tough, it's a very particular skillset and a lot of micromanaging, but it's possible. But, yeah, though the official events had a dinner, snacks might've made more sense for this baby version of the official events.
they used to do it at the mutter for club 13.
I hope that Netflix takes the huge marketing opportunity and plans an official Bridgerton Ball in Detroit and offers a discount to anyone who got duped at this ...fiasco.

the dancer had other talents too from what I heard and they, the organizers, could have not been cheap and had her do some other routine and dance for that specific event. but they decided to be cheap and that poor dancer suffered for it. especially since they, the organizers, basically told her go play target for mad patrons with their actions.

I was under the impression that the dancer wasn’t a stripper- like pole dancing is an actual art form. That may have been the event planner’s intention, considering the outfit she was told to wear
